So, I have been asked by a friend to take a look at his nonworking computer and after several hours of testing things I have come to the conclusion that the processor must be fried. I have tested each of the 4 sticks of RAM in each slot individually, reset the CMOS, tested the video card, used an old backup PCI vid card, checked the hard drives, and nothing seems to work. The problem with the computer is that, even though it powers on and you can see everything works and gets power, nothing is displayed on the screen, it does not even POST.
I am wanting to go ahead and purchase an OEM or used (whatever I can reliably find) AM2 socket processor, as it has an ASUS m2n32-sli deluxe motherboard in it.

So I guess my first question would be if my conclusion of the problem makes sense to anyone else? And secondly, what might be the best AM2 processor for the money that I might be able to find, or even if anyone had an old one that they might be getting rid of and wanting to sell? I have looked on amazon and ebay, and have found this, an Athlon 64 X2 5200+ 2.7GHz, for $50 on amazon ( http://www.amazon.com/AMD-Athlon-2-7GHz-2x512KB-Dual-Core/dp/B001FEDL0G ). And I did also have a question about the socket itself, will an AM2+ processor ( like this, http://www.amazon.com/AMD-Black-Processor-Athlon-Socket/dp/B003LMLB1G ) work in an AM2 board?

Thanks for all the help in advance!

Checked the power supply? From my experience the power supply is probably 95% more likely to die than the cpu.

Well, I am assuming that since everything did power on, including the hard drives and video card, that the power supply is good, save of the very small chance that only the CPU power cord is no longer working? Not sure how I would test that one cable though...

I would suspect the motherboard as being fried, before the processor. You should test the processor in other boards, and other processors in this one.

Power supplies can die but not be completely dead. I've seen many over the years that have enough juice to spin everything up but not have enough power to boot the computer. I've even seen a few that would boot but not have enough power to get completely into Windows. I've even seen power supplies that could boot and run a lower power consuption computer but appear dead on a system that was more power hungry.

Honestly cpu is always the last thing I try since it's the leat likely to die.

Agreed. At work where I have had 100s of processors. I have had a single CPU die in 15 years. And it died because of a failure in the heatsink fan. All other components have a much higher failure rate.

I've never had a CPU die. I've had tons of PS & an occasional motherboard die.

I think Roberty has hit the nail on the head.
