Due to the many unpleasant things going on in my life as of late, I hate to let you guys know that I'm taking a sabatical from Folding. Money has gotten pretty tight, and I simply have to hold off for a while.

Mother in law got brain cancer and had to move in with us, and needs daily trips to John's Hopkins for treatments, so I had to take a long period off work to help with that. Company is too small for family leave, so no pay coming in there.

Wife is 8 months pregnant, and got put on home rest due to that, so she's on disability, and so our household infome is about 20% of normal wages. This means we're tapping into the savings to the tune of about $2500 a month.

So things are kinda tight, though we'll be okay. Just have to tighten up the belt to the max for 3-4 months.

Sorry to hear that. That sounds like a difficult mixture of joy and sadness. I hope things get better soon.

We hope all turns out well.

Family is more important than anything. You are a true son and husband, and your child to be is a very lucky one.

God bless and be with your family in this difficult time.

We will be here when you are able to get back to "normal"

Yes, agreed with this. I wish you good luck thru this difficult period and I hope the outcome is very bright to make this sacrifice worthwhile.

The door is always open for you in our team so feel free to resume anytime

Ouch, sorry to hear about the rough spell you're going through.

I've got to believe there's some government programs out there that might be able to help you out so you don't have to tap your savings too hard. I've got to think Social Security disability for your mother-in-law, at least.

Take care Bill, I've been on disability for the past year and a half so I know where you are right now.

Mother in law is getting disability since she's 100% disabled. Her money is spent feeding her and paying the mortgage on her place (which when she recovers is likely to be sold and her moved into a small apt/condo nearer to us).

Thanks for the cheering up guys. I'll still be around though, just not Folding for a bit.

Take care Bill, we'll all be pulling for you. :p

Take care Bill, and take care of yourself as well. Praying for your family:)

Hang in there Bill.....best wishes and I hope things get better for you and yours soon.

Take care.
Drop in and say hello as and when possible.

Luck ............... :D :D

Damn, Bill Clo....sorry to hear about the challenges.
What can we do to help?

I can run some boxen for you, our office has free elec.
PM me if I can help. We can write up a contract if your worried about the hardware.

Hey no problem on the folding thing Mr Bill Clo. I'll always think the family comes first before anything and I send you my best wishes in getting a little more sunshine in your life.

Please say "Hi" to your wife and tell her "good luck" with the baby for me. Please tell her to remember "if men were to go through the pain and discomfort of having children there would be many less children the the world". Thank you and your wife for adding to the future of mankind.

Please tell your wife's Mom to hang in there and "good luck" with the treatments at "John Hopkins". I've read where JH hospital was a dynamite hospital and I realize "hanging in there" requires a much braver individual than I probably am.

In all honesty I wish I could do more to help, take care and good luck. (Please don't worry about the folding we at the [H]orde will try and pick up your slack)

Edit: I hope you and Mr relic can work something out, but as you and him are already aware, the family always comes first.

Thank you for the kind offer, but at this point, the moral support is just fine with me. If one of you guys can bring a couple SMP boxes online, that'll offset my missing contribution. :) Consider it a good excuse to reactivate a machine or two.

Fair enough. :D
We wish you all the best, Bill.
Take care of the family.

Update:

The mother in law is still in JH, slowly improving. I have to say from what we've seen in our frequent visits to JH, that given a choice of hospitals, I wouldn't bring my cat into JH again, let alone a person. We've had some real horror stories to tell about that place. Such as:

Docs who have such a massive case of the arrogant ego that they would not listen to the patient's family concerns concerning treatment (or observations of nursing inadequacies) even to the point of us threatening lawsuit. They treat us like dogshit when we go in, for having the audacity to ask questions and not go along with the program like good little robots. "Gods in white lab coats" they think they are - the chemo doc actually said that "we don't make mistakes here at JH". What an ass. If ANY other hospital would be willing to take her in, we'd move her in a heartbeat, but no one wants to take a case that JH screwed up (liability I guess).

Nursing staff that is so overworked they are burnt out and don't give a hoot - we found the Mother in law in her bed, tied down, chemically restrained, naked, and lying in her own feces, all while her "sitter" watched TV, ignored her, and left for her dinner break when we arrived. Nurse took 2 HOURS to respond to request for help cleaning her up. Kind of crap I'd expect out of a 3rd-rate nursing home, not JH.

And worst of all, the "team" approach to treatment, wherein many docs contribute to her care, some changing meds around w/o telling the rest of the team and making things worse - plus they rotate every month, so the first week of the month is spent breaking in a new set of docs who don't know her situation very well. And there is no one in charge of her care - they all make "team decisions" and no one is in charge of interacting with the patient's family, so getting good info on her progress is a real chore.

On the plus side, the son was born on June 13, and is doing very well. At this point, I doubt that I will be returning to Folding due to the way Stanford has handled the GPU client changeover and their attitude that I don't like. 5 years of contributions is enough. But I'll still check in here occasionally just to see how things are progressing.

Our prayers are with your family, for good and bad.

I hope things improve at JH. I'd document everything.

I hate to hear of such a rough time your family is going through. Congratulations on your new child though! I am sure this time is just a huge emotional rollercoaster (yeah, i said that) due to all of the good and all of the bad that is going on.

We will remain here, you can return to folding any time.

Add my prayers as well, I hope everything will come to a happy end for all of you.

Keep in mind the [H]orde will always wait for you with open arms :)

All our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family Bill. And congrats on the little one.

Wow Mr Clo  I have never had any real experience with JH (thank God), it's probably because I've lived on the "left coast" most of my life. Unfortunately I can only "mimic" and repeat what I've read in several periodicals. :(

I do hope "with all my heart " your "mother in law" improves and I pray that fortune may fall on you and your family. :D

Oh yeah, congrats to the max on your addition to the family. :p

That deal about "we at JH's don't make mistakes" makes me cringe inside :(

FOLD ON!

Checking in after a long absence. Wow, things don't seem to have changed much with Stanford. Still a big case of raging egos and still taking the donors for granted. :(

I saw discussion of FAH on another board, and it reminded me that I had not stopped in for quite some time.

The boy is doing fine, nearly 3 years old. Wife's mother died after treatment at John's Hopkins; she only got to see her grandson while she was in hospice. That really sucked.

I had thought about restarting my one machine on FAH, but given that Stanford's attitude doesn't seem to have changed, why bother?

Any of the old guys still around, like BillR, Relic?

I haven't seen Bill in years, Relic comes in once every few months and blesses us with his wisdom.

Ah, BillR's still around [H], just not here. See him posting in GenMay once and a while, but I haven't seen relic in a long time..... course I haven't been here much lately either sooooo.......

Sorry about your mother in law, that's a tough deal man, truly sorry.

On the good side, she got to see her grandson. My wife's grandma missed the birth of her first great granddaughter by about 12 months. My wife still regrets that.

Like others have said, BillR can be found around H at times. Relic last popped in here about 6 months ago IIRC.

Ultimately, though, thanks for checking in! It's always great to hear from the old timers!

I agree, I miss a lot of the crew that was here when I started. Bill and Relic were monsters back in the day

psst, jebo..... some of us are still here.... and we are not hard of hearing.

I like how aldamon has the hardape badge in his post above

jebo,

celerator, jws and tiger did too, this thread probably started during the chimp challenge 3 years ago.

I obviously didn't read very far. We should get back into the CC next year.

Let's take that discussion else where. There are a lot of very strong feelings about that. Not all of them good.

I guess I can reminisce a bit. I started in 2002 as I recall.

The big thing was an AMD XP 1900, upgraded to an XP2700, started the process of borging and building extra systems with various bits and pieces...ended up with 8 systems at one point, and a whopping power bill.

I'm glad to see the Mojo saga is still around; it's good to see some remnant of us old-timers around. :)

I recognize some of the users here, so it's not as if ALL the old-timers have moved on.

I saw that, but the team has changed a lot since the last time we were involved in the CC.

I think it's time.

I have a suggestion, Later on this year lets have an open poll so that members can vote once again.

Personally if its going to split the team apart then we should steer well away and focus on reclaiming the rightful spot at the top. The gap between the daily averages is starting to close so its not insurmountable

Good to see you around Bill.

I respectfully have to disagree as quite a bit has changed, for the good, with Stanford (Pande Group).
  • Through the creation of a Donors Advisory Board, something that Team 33 worked very hard to help create, communications with Pande Group are much improved. There is still much work to be done to further improve communications but we've come a long way.
  • Point inconsistencies are being looked at and addressed, there are several undervalued work units currently under review and their points should be increased soon.
  • Beta testing of new work units is no longer being done behind closed doors and anyone is now free to use the beta flags. See Vijay's blog entry here for more detail.
  • We now have a new core, A4 that is finally bringing more points to uni-processor clients by employing the Quick Return Bonus (QRB) to the projects.
The above are just the highlights of a much different Pande Group. But, like I said, it's a work in progress. I've been able to get to know Vijay well over the past few months and can honestly say there are no raging egos anywhere and we donors are definitely not being taken for granted.

And we have Tobit to thank for bringing the DAB about. It was a long week for poor Tobit but he brought about large positive change at the end of it.
