I have an old system with an Abit aN8 SLI motherboard, socket 939 aMD 4000+ CPU, and two 7800GTX video cards. Been working perfectly for years. Yesterday it shut down right when I was using it. When trying to reboot, get one long beep and the screen stays black.

Looking at the postcodes it beeps on 26 and goes to 7F where it stays.

I tried to remove cards, swap memory, etc. and nothing works. Any idea what this could be?

no, dont have another. Do you think this is what it is?

Thanks for the reply.

Oh man, went to newegg to pickup another PSU and they changed as well. I have an old OCZ Powerstream but not sure what format to buy. ATX12v right?

I was planning to research and do a major upgrade this year but looks like that may be happening sooner. Everything has changed since I built this, Lol.

I found the manual online and error 26 is
1. If Early_Init_Onboard_Generator is not defined Onboard clock generator initialization. Disable respective clock resource to empty PCI & DIMM slots.
2. Init onboard PWM
3. Init onboard H/W monitor devices
Not really sure what would cause this. Maybe try clearing the cmos?

7f is
Switch back to text mode if full screen logo is supported
-If errors occur, report errors & wait for keys
-If no errors occur or F1 key is pressed to continue: Clear EPA or customization logo

Hmmm....

Tried to clear the CMOS. Even tried taking the battery out for awhile. don't have clue whats going on...

Thanks for the reply!

Probably a cap went bad I'd guess. See if any are bulging or leaking.

I had an older Abit board that had the bad cap problem...worked fine for a long time then poof bad caps burst. There were like 4 in a row that did. I suppose I could have bought some replacements and tried to solder them on but by that time it was time for a new system anyway.

new caps cost like a buck to buy, take only a few minutes to replace. worth a little handiwork imo.

Thanks for the helpful replies!

Caps all look OK. I took the battery out of the Mobo while I was at work today. Came home, plopped it in and turned on the computer... Now no beep and it's hanging on the 9.0 postcode.

Thats PSU related correct? I have 2 cold cathodes in the box that are flickering as well so thats what I am thinking.

That TR2 power supply has a poor track record, and the case seems a bit spendy for what it provides. You could get a nice full tower for less than that. Bluray ROM drive may be superfluous if you already have a home theater with a BD component. You can get any old DVD burner these days for around $25.

Just my two cents.

I checked the manual I found online there is no 9.0 postcode. Personally it sounds more like the board is gone than psu since it is giving you a bunch of different codes.

pull out all but 1 stick of ram and 1 vid card see if it posts if not try another stick and so forth worth a shot

Did this and didn't help. Tried one stick of RAM in all 4 slots then moved to the next stick of RAM... That took awhile, Lol.

For closure and in case anyone else has this problem with an ancient system... I borrowed a damn nice Corsair PSU and same problem. However, figured out how to get the system running. First, I have to attempt to start the system, let it hang then hold in the power button to shut it off. Reset the bios then restart again and hit F1. If I turn it off or attempt to reboot from Windows it doesnt work.

What's weird is that I have to start up the computer and have it hang in boot up. Cannot just turn it off and reset the bios. I dont get the F1 prompt then... Guess there is something wrong on the motherboard.

Anyway, can't complain as this computer has served me very well over 5 years. Built another system yesterday with a AMD 965 BEx4, Azrock mobo, 8gb Corsair, 1tb HD, Win7Pro 64, NZXT M59 case, and 730watt PSU. Didn't get what I really wanted because of cash but this box runs really snappy.
