New Silverstone FT02

maybe you smoke cigs a lot. Ive seen computers with layers and layers of "oily film" from users smoking next to them computers.

Nope, no smokers in a 100 yd radius. Plus that wouldn't explain why I had no oil on the filter a week ago and quite a bit of it now. Gotta be the bearing, I think.

Has anyone ordered a black FT02 without the window off Amazon lately? I'm thinking about ordering and wanted to know if it was the revision with the honeycomb grills or the grills integrated with the fans?

I did see a post here that a recently ordered silver FT02S from Amazon had the older honeycomb grills on the fans.

I got my windowless FT02 from Amazon in January and it was a v1.7 with factory-installed AP181 fans / integrated grilles.

could you tell me how is amazon when it comes to shipping? they usually say something like ships 1-4 weeks from the date of purchase. i'm kinda puzzled I don't want to be waiting a week or a month for them to ship me a case to new york when newegg usually takes care of that in 3 days.

how was your case taken care of by amazon>? speedy delivery?

I have Amazon Prime which gives free two day shipping. I just ordered a FT02B and it says it's in Stock and I should get it Friday using 1 day shipping for $4 bucks extra. If I used two day shipping it would be at my place by Monday.

Be sure to check that it's "Sold by Amazon" as secondary retailers show up first on some searches. I'll let you know how it looks when I get it. Newegg's shipping is like 30-40 bucks on the case.

Just got my FT02 yesterday, and I have to say I really underestimated the sheer size of this case. It's HUGE! It's like a piece of furniture! I can't wait to build in it :)

So what's all this about honeycomb grills?

Also: any recommendations on how to get some lighting in the case while keeping the already good fans?

I order from Amazon all the time because of Prime Shipping. Have a few things arriving today.
If Amazon has it in stock they are the best to buy from.

good to know because they often have something way cheaper than newegg.

Just so you feel better about it, I ordered the windowless FT02B from Amazon in March. Used Amazon Prime.

Received in 1 week: Check
Confirmed AP181 fans: Check
Box in Excellent Condition: Check

Replaced the top fan with a LED R4 and slapped a 212+ with two Gentle Typhoons on the CPU and I don't have to do anything else for a long time. Will still be getting a Lamptron FC Touch to control the R4 and 3 181s so I don't have to pull off the top if I want to crank the 181s to high. Much fun!

thanks, I will do my order probably today.

although I have to share that my questions were towards amazon in general not about buying a fortress case. im looking at a corsair there, gottcha!

Just got my FT02B delivered via Fedex from Amazon. They didn't double box but the box and case didn't have any shipping damage.

Couple questions though, should the side of the top panel that snaps on be flush with the sides of the case? The one I received had it bowing out slightly (2mm-3mm) toward the center of the case while being flush toward the back and front.

Also had a few tiny chips in the paint at the edges of the font and back top. Sharper would fix but is this the normal fit and finish for this case? A little disappointed there, especially since it looked pretty well protected in the plastic and styrofoam---looked like it was minor damage prior to packaging. Case was definitely new and sealed.

Case was marked V1.9. Came with the 181 fans and the golf ball like divoted top fan.

I would definately contact Amazon or SilverStone as that's not how it should be. Mine has no chips and is not bowed in the least.

I just checked mine and it's like you describe. The top panel is more flush to the side panels at the edges and there is a bit of increasing overhang towards the middle. So I think this is by design.

Thanks for the above replies. Contacted Amazon's customer service and they're shipping out a new case overnight (won't get it til Tuesday though :( ) and they are covering the return shipping on this one after I get the new one.

A window-less V1.9 FT02B? I wonder what's different about it compared to my V1.4. Tony, would you care to shed some light on various revisions?

Decided to Mod the Case a bit and remove the 5bay Array cage.
The space will be perfect for another push/pull radiator.
Since I only use SSDs, the drive cage was a waste.

I plan on getting a couple of Antec 620's and adapting them to fit my 6970 Cards.

So I popped all the rivets and dismantled, then a buddy of mine took the case to his work. (Paints cars for a living). He sprayed the inner case with Lexus ISF Ultrasonic Blue Mica.

I replaced my Asus Mobo with the Asrock X58 Extreme6. It came with a USB 3.0 3.5 Bracket. I took the unit apart and JB welded the USB 3.0 ports in where the old USB 2.0 top ports were.

I was going to wait till it all came in, but could not help myself.

Wow, I initially thought that was a gawdy level of blue but once the parts get in there it looks really good. Nice work and good luck fitting those water coolers onto your GPUs....it's gonna look pretty sweet.

I will never understand why people take cases specifically built for air cooling and ruin them with water cooling...
If you want to water cool take a case specifically built for that (like the 800d).

First, the case was designed for either. Hence the reason it comes with radiator adapter for the 180mm fans.

Second

800D = floor standing coffee table.

The FT02 case fit my 20" height requirement to fit on top of my desk.
Plus the case rarely has a spec of dust in it due to the layout.

I can not stand computers that sit on the floor.
It is something I will look at every day, therefore it needs to be perdy.

We are constantly making minor changes to improve the product, they could be anything from revisions that make them easier for us to manufacture or even corrections to information presented on the retail box. The most important change that we've made to the FT02 that would be relevant to user experience was the update to Air Penetrator AP181 fans. For this, we listed the revision number that had this change here:

I have just recieved my FT02b-w- on your website it states anything over V 1.7 has the air penetrators.

Tony if you dont mind, my question is- I have just checked my box and I have version 1.6 what differences are there between this and the 1.7 as I appear to have the Air penetrators? The only thing I can see is that I dont have the hexagonal fan grills- does this affect performance much?

thanks.

I'm searching for a Power Supply Unit that would be specially adapted to the specially oriented airflow of the FT02.

And I think what would work out best for a vertically placed Power Supply Unit is a heavily ventilated bottom side (the side where it's modular cables come down from), because that would allow the airflow coming from the FT02 fan at the bottom of the case bellow the PSU to go straight through the Power Supply Unit on it's way out through the top of the case, instead of having that same upward airflow being blocked by the Power Supply Unit.

This would potentially not only allow the inside of the PSU to be cooled directly and more silently by the FT02 fans, but also reduce the airflow turbulence inside the FT02 (because the airflow would go straight through the PSU, instead of smacking into it and spreading all over the place to work it's way around it).

Also some PSUs which work like this use an 80mm fan on the top side (the side pointing to the top of the FT02), instead of a bigger fan on the usual side for a PSU (the side pointing to the back of the FT02), and so I'm also wondering which kind of PSU fan would would cooperate best with the bottom FT02 fan.

And my question is : If I am correct in assuming that this would be the best kind of PSU airflow for the FT02, which PSU would that be ?

To illustrate what I mean, here are two examples of the kind of PSU that I'm talking about :
- Antec TPQ-850 850W
17-371-009-S04
17-371-009-S02

- ENERMAX Galaxy EGX850EWL (this one has two fans)

17-194-020-15.jpg

However those models are outdated and mostly sold out anyway, so I'm looking for some similar but less outdated alternatives (2010-2011 models).

Thank you.

Thank you.

Just get a power supply like the last link you posted of a Galaxy PSU and for gods sake, get a moduler one lol. Don't worry about the PSU getting enough airflow or the air not having a straight path to work through. The people that designed these PSUs have made sure that airflow is going to properly ventilate these things. The FT02's backend has a fresh air intake for the PSU which is a ton better then what some cases afford the PSU.

yea like grunt said, the psu will get plenty of air not matter the position you put it in so i wouldnt be worried about that, and yes stay with a modular one! fully modular if you can

Well a list of names of "a power supply like the links I posted" is exactly what I'm asking about.

And the ENERMAX Galaxy EGX850EWL is (semi) modular, that's why I mentioned it for a FT02:
psu-207.jpg

However those two PSUs I mentioned are old designs, seem to suffer from bad customer reviews (unreliable), and are mostly sold out now anyway.

Also the designers of the FT02 made sure that the rear ventilation hole fitted a long enough 1000W or more PSU fan just fine, but at the expense of not making the FT02 match the fan position of any 850W or less PSU fan I could come up with (and I checked many) : Most PSU fans end up being 33% covered by the rear plate of the FT02.

A PSU with 33% of it's fan covered can still achieve the same airflow, but by running it's fan 50% faster : (67% usable PSU fan surface) x (1.5 PSU fan speed) = 100% PSU fan airflow.

As the alternative to making the PSU fan run 50% faster, or buying a 1000W+ modular PSU the FT02 was designed for, that got me thinking about finding a PSU that could make direct use of the very efficient airflow from FT02 Air Penetrator fans, making the PSU fan almost redundant.

I had a bad experience from a PSU on a previous case running a single GPU, so with a dual GPU I'd like to get that part right this time.

PS : I did check the Silverstone website for a list of recommended PSUs for the FT02, but the only PSU they recommend is the ~400$ SILVERSTONE ST1500 1500W, which is a bit overkill in both price and power for a dual GPU (or even a triple or quadruple GPU), even if the reasoning they provide for using an oversized PSU does make sense.

Buy a quality PSU and you'll be fine dude, im sure most FT02 users have their fans 33% covered. I do and have been running for a few months without issue on a BFG EX-1000w. Do a bit of research im sure you can find the same PSU under a different name brand. In fact, here is HardOCP's review of teh PSU I have, they usually crack the PSUs open to see where they really come from. http://www.hardocp.com/article/2009/07/28/bfg_ex1000_1000_watt_power_supply/. Oh and if my fan IS spinning faster, ive yet to hear it.

ya I'm using that Antec, the 850w even, works awesome. Before that I had a CM 700 Silent Pro and it was partially covered with the back opening and worked fine. I think some of Silverstones own power supplies are the only ones that line up properly with the back fresh air intake

I've bought a Thermalright SIlver Arrow (it will get to my place sometime next week) and wanted to know if it fits the FT02.

I measured it and it seems like it will, but do any of you have first hand knowledge?
