LINK Promo Code = EMCKFHD42 (stolen from slickdeals)

It's not the newest and greatest in the land of routers, but it still packs a pretty big punch for $55 and free shipping.

The biggest feature it's missing is dual band, but other than that it's pretty solid. There were firmware issues in the past (you can google), but I've had really really good luck with mine.

I love mine, and the others who I have recommended it to love it. 55$ is a real steal for it. Lowest I have seen is like $70.

that's a great deal! I wish I could afford it. I think it can run the biggest build of DDWRT

this does not need DD-wrt... it works perfectly. Mine works great for me. I love it. I haven't restarted it in months... Paid 75 for mine, so i consider this a deal for someone looking for a good upgrade.

great router, ive been using it for 3 years..

but, last week I upgraded to a WNDR4000 and.. wow its definitely better

Good deal for a great router. Like others said above, this doesn't need DDWRT, it runs fantastically as it is. Haven't even had to access my config for months and that's with 7 computers running through it, and hosting a Teamspeak 3 server.

i got one on ebay for $20 works awesome nothing wrong for the full retail package mine is a Hardware ver. B1 its a awesome router for the price. i would say go for it anybody looking to upgrade to a router for cheap.

Debating this and slightly more advanced ones with dual band... any benefits of going w/ dual band? I've no experience with it

the diffrence bewteen is the 2.4 wireless range has more stuff on it. with the 5ghz range there is not stuff on it. but the draw back of it, it dont go as far as 2.4ghz does. i spent like 2 weeks looking into it. and thats the only differece i could find. there might be more to it. but i am not that much into. as long as it works am happy

Good router.... wireless is ok, but this thing is rock solid. Probably could go for over a year on uptime. Unlike my previous POS Belkin.

It's needed if you want WOL(Wake on LAN) Unfortunately the this router does not support WOL from an outside connection.

I have wake on lan setup with this router. I can wake my media pc from my cell phone for audio streaming.

I do not believe WOL has anything to do with the router (unless the router blocks the incoming packet for whatever reason... bad config maybe?)

is there any reason you'd want this over a '802.11g' router (di-524) if you get great signal anywhere in your house and your internet is no where close to the wireless bandwidth

depends on which revision. My RevA2 can, iirc.

Can you show me where you found DD-WRT for the DIR-655? I'd love to use it, but as far as I can tell it's not possible... Just searched the Router Database on their website and it says not possible for any revision.

if you're saying that you already have the other one, then no, if it was a choice between the two for a purchase...? I would spend the extra $10 or so...

I have looked at dozens of sites and not a single one says this router will work with DD-WRT.

jeezus people, get off that DD-WRT shit. It was cool when i had a Linksys, because it was the ONLY thing that made that router worth a damn. But, this router Doesn't need it! As in, it works perfectly, and is stable as hell!

That's what I figured, when I got a new laptop that could accept 802.11n I almost rushed out and bought one, until I realized that my internet speed is still about 10times slower than 802.11g will push. Plus why would I want a stronger signal? So more people can see I have wireless and potentially hack it (assuming the day comes when WPA2 is hackable).

I was just wondering if there was something that I was missing though.

I totally agree this router has way better options in a much more simplifed perspective than the DD-WRT I wouldn't trade it no way! My buddy has the DD-WRT not nearly as cool as cool as this router.. Everything you need exists in this router and you can manually change some IP features which are more static on the DD-WRT.. This is the most configureable router I have ever used.. Also, the most simplified..

the only thing you'd want n for would be transfers between computers. It you're streaming HD from one machine to another, the faster speeds are nice.

People trust DD-WRT and they know how it works so they like using it. After years of shit firmwares on various products from Linksys, Netgear, and D-Link, they don't trust stuff to work out of the box anymore. When we got a new router for my house, being able to run DD-WRT was a requirement.

DD-WRT was cool, but now as long as it works,i really dont give a damn. this d-link works. i can d/l and game and i dont slowdown, so i am all good.

not to mention how many fucked up dir 655 firmwares with broken functionality there were between the ~~v1.20 updates. And if you went to 1.3 (iirc it was 1.3....) you couldn't go back

I have this router. Probably been the overall fastest and most reliable router I've ever had. Only problem I've had recently is that any kind of QoS or WAN traffic shaping kills my upload speeds (I run a media business, upload is important). (QoS was working at one point, not sure why its not working properly now)

I bought mine when it was over $100. For $50, I'm tempted to buy another one for backup.

Get it.

Ya took the words right outta my mouth. :)

Considering this... After seeing CP3's results with the WNDR4000, I'm not sure what I want.

I bit, I've had two D-Link DIR-625's for over 3 years, both still working, the first one I used I gave to my girlfriend, the second one I'm currently using.
Time to give the 2nd router to my brother and use this badboy!

This router's firmware may work but it's not nearly as feature filled as DD-WRT. With all the great choices that are out there that do support DD-WRT I don't see why someone would still get this over one of those.

I've used this router and its performance is average. It doesn't support that many simultaneous connections and can get overloaded with one user depending on how you use it.

I have the 628 model and there is absolutely no functional difference between this one and that other than gigabit ports and they are not even used as the switch that is plugged into it is only 100mpbs. So this router has 3 antennas....not a game changer.... I would whole heartedly recommend this to anyone who needs a kicking router for that price

as for DDWRT lawl it has nothing on the stock firmware and seeing how the 628 can handle 25+ users on wireless, plus 8 wired users, I have to call shens on router getting overloaded with one person or a few....

I have 24mbps coming into the house where I live........ and the router never experiences slow downs unless comcast is the one causing the slowdowns (I access the modem logs)

Based upon my experience, I would have to say that if the performance of the DIR-628 is excellent for a consumer device, I would expect it's big brother to be the same...

Debating this and slightly more advanced ones with dual band... any benefits of going w/ dual band? I've no experience with it

Dual band router is totally useless if it does not transmit on both bands at the same time. PS3 and Wii do not support N and the 360's with intergrated wireless N do not support 5Ghhz

The DIR-655 supports a maximum of 120 simultaneous connections and your 628 only supports 32. 1 user can definitely saturate this and that is a big problem when you cant make any new connections without closing some. When I use my computer I use over 200 connections regularly myself so I need a router than can do 500-1000. Some users need more.

I've had a minecraft server up with three players on it, including myself, while the GF streams netflix at the same time, without any problem. What are you guys doing that is heavier? I think for the average user it's fine.

i used one of these for a bit, but i needed a dual band WAP and ended up giving this one to my dad. it works fine for his use.

as for dd-wrt...there are plenty of reasons now to not even consider it (broken qos, broken drivers, security issues) - for the average user, imo, the factory firmware on this unit is just fine.
