iPads Are Killing Jobs

As wacky as he sounds he does have a point. But thats a cycle thats be going on and will continue. Part of it is businesses need to be able to change, I know its easier said and done.

It doesn't eliminate publishers in the sense that they are still needed to produce a professional product from a manuscript. It does however eliminate the brick & mortar book stores. However, if you check the books you've bought, you'll see that almost all the large publishers already print their books in China. The loss of sales from companies like Borders is being balanced by the gain from companies like Amazon.

Actually it will take away most of the power publishers have in time. When MP3's became truly popular there was no stopping either A. the pirating of MP3's B. the cheap distribution of them via artists or third parties.

How many of you goto the record store now to buy music? I'm willing to bet zero. Same thing will happen to books eventually , e-book readers are getting cheaper and cheaper. Its just logical to think the same will happen to books. Magazines are all on life support now , most of my favorites have been canceled and every time I goto the store I see less on the shelf and only tabloid mags seem to get sold.

Publishers will hang on with a death grip , just like the record companies have so far. But they will not be required to get a book out anymore to the general public. Overseas though its a different story , thats what will keep publishers around longer.

This fool in the video is taking one major economic issue and trying to relate it to the downside of technological advancement. There are millions of jobs overseas that are simply there as tax shelters . Blame greedy corporations , not technological advancement.

It seems like what he's saying is sort of true. New technology can increase efficiency and make old jobs unnecessary.

What does he want to do about it.

Something only a leftard marxist son of a race hustler would say. Brilliant.

This was the same argument made by the UAW when auto plants wanted to integrate robotics into their manufacturing line up. Some lost their jobs because they chose not to be retrained elsewhere, but instead what happened was that there was more work for more people at a higher rate of efficiency with better quality.

Here is a test for you and anyone else. Pick one item you can see. It doesn't matter what it is. A door knob, a single mosfet, a toothpick, a piece of iron. whatever. Now, think about how many people it takes to make that one item. From mining the materials or pulling the oil out of the ground and then move up the chain of fabrication and manufacturing. Ipad isn't about losing jobs. It's about a representative who has ZERO clue about how an economy works.

Another question. Do you know what the economy is? Don't fall for his bullshit, because that's what it is. Bullshit.

This argument has been around since the creation of machines themselves. Yet themselves have created new jobs while eliminating the need for some old ones. Just becomes some book printing companies will be no longer be in business doesn't mean those can't find jobs elsewhere.

A few questions for Mr. Jackson: (1) Why are you complaining to Congress? Apple is the one having the devices made overseas. Talk to Apple! (2) Why did you buy one if they are killing jobs? Your very purchase further adds to the job killing process, right? Supporting the company that is killing books? (3) I thought moving a demand for deforestation was a good thing for the people of this planet?

1.) If you hate outsourcing why would you be for privatization? It's principally the same objective. The reason the USPS has lost money is because the vast package business went to Fedex and UPS instead of them, in most other countries Fedex and UPS pay royalties or licensing fees to the nation to work with their system. Only in the US is it an absolute free-for-all. If anything I would rather turn the USPS into a loss leader to destroy Fedex and UPS. Government controlled monopolies end up much better than privately controlled duopolies.

Um, the USPS already is a government sanctioned monopoly and it kind of sucks at competing with no one as it is now for mail delivery. Further, government sanctioned monopolies generally blow since they have no competition and no reason to keep their customers happy. Comcast is in many areas a government sanctioned local monopoly and how has that worked out? (The answer is piss poor) In the end government sanctioned monopolies and government controlled monopolies are horrible for the economy and for customers. The only thing they are good at is maintaining government control of the people, reducing development and investment, increasing cost, and decreasing services.

You can't really order a private company to do something in favor of that country's economy. Although it's true, every enterprise will be doing everything at lowest cost for the highest revenue it was never any different and it wont be. Simple as that. That's why most of household stuff from EU and US corporations is made in Asia.

fedex has been desperately trying to buy the postal service. i believe they made 2 offers so far, both turned down.

theyre already setup to take it over. theyd keep it called "the us postal service", all the mail carriers, sorters etc.. they'd just integrate their smaller distribution network (very small compared to fedex) into fedex. as it is, they already rent a lot of space on fedex aircraft. we should just sell it to them imo.

also, outsourcing shit to china makes me nuts. i hate that shit, and the fact that they own most of our debt.

All your statements were made during the rise of the Japanese yen and how Americans didn't like the idea that the Japanese were buying everything eg buildings, malls, factories, golf courses(very big on that one). My answer to the worry warts, so what, they can't take the items back to Japan. Everything still stays here no matter what. The Chinese owning all that debt means they are going to try to make sure that debt keeps its value. The Japanese are not that much farther behindin owning American debt. My theory is that the American dollar was quite high in relation to the asian block which sucks for exports. The Chinese refuse to allow their currency to rise. One way to devalue your currency is to print money, without making it look obvious you throw in a economic melt down. Europe was in the same boat. So a major adjustment had to be made. Remember all the hundreds of billions that were thrown into the economy's of the world, that money wasn't sitting in some bank, it was being printed. Notice how much the American dollar has depreciated in the last while vs the rest of the world, keep in mind its the %age you have to look at. Things still have to balance out, all the highest currency's have to take a hit . Just look north, Canada hasn't had a dollar higher then the US since the early seventies. I'll say this again, after China creates their middle class those factories will move to India after that it will be Africa. The fighting going on in Africa right now is the Industrial nations (Corporations) carving the Continent up for its mineral wealth and cheap labor. So my friend, things are going along as planned.:)

And by "stupid environment rules" I mean the ones that allow the EPA to fine companies for building in a wetland when a puddle forms in their parking lot.

Blame the greed government that forces corporations to relocate jobs over seas just to stay in business.

Ok then its settled Steve Jobs will now be paying unemployment.

I can live with this.

I don't see anything funny about what he said. The people who make their living selling magazines and news papers, I say, get more education. To the production in China, the US cannot compete thanks to fair trade and the world bank. Funny considering we used fair trade and the world bank to rape other countries in the past, things tend to come back to bite us in the ass.

Actually you're wrong. I work IN publishing and the companies that print hardcopy are closing down left and right. For example; BMW has started including iPads with the owners manual on it with certain models of their cars. It can't be cheaper to put an iPad in the glovebox and when your iPad dies it's not going to be cheaper to replace than a hardcopy manual either.

Blame the greedy consumer that is willing to knowingly comprise his morals for a cheaper product.

there is a direct correlation between the decline in the use of the spirograph and the increase in gang activity - the simpsons

What morals? I dont want to pay $1000 for an ipad because some high school dropout thinks he needs $30 an hour and a fucking pension to put the ipad sticker on the box.

Im all for creating American jobs and even think unions are a good idea but they have gone too far.

Give me an option made in the US thats not built like ass or overpriced and i will pick it 100% of the time. Like it or not because of how fucked things are over here having your factories overseas is the best option for the company AND the consumer.

Besides getting on your high horse about greedy consumers compromising morals but doing so on a machine thats full of components made in china just makes you a big ass hypocrite...

You know where all that fancy shit in your computer comes from? Thats right lost jobs fueled your post.

Good point. I bought a camera and the manual was on an SD card.

I worked in publishing but it was a different domain. We did poetry, novels, literary essays, etc. In that sense the publisher is more than just a way to get the book on the shelf. He works closely with the writer to improve the product. Somewhat like a producer will work with a singer to change the arrangements. We started publishing to e-books a few years ago. The printers are feeling the pain, but not the publisher since very few writers are big names and can self-publish.

Why do we assume there can be no in-between? I agree that $30/hour for a no-education job is too much. I'd pay more (albeit not much more) to know that workers that made the iPad weren't being poisoned or had high suicide rates.

Seriously.... Who is going to protect the jobs of all the blacksmiths out there? When the military stops using swords and armor, what are all of those unemployed blacksmiths going to do?

Oh wait, that already happened and we're doing just fine.

like India and China, Americans need to get their asses off the couch and get to work.

even though this is messed up video in a sense, he's right, we need to bring those jobs back home. darn take freaking every top 100 technology corporation, doing majority of their freaking production over seas.

US freaking needs to change and Cut down i mean shut down bringing things from outside and making them home. freaking walmart will be booming here too and stop going over seas to make them stores.

They took our jobs
thytokorjobs

OMG..... what an idiot...

you adapt, what happens to people who do customer service at a store? They do it online or over the phone. Idiot....

Whos assuming? There is no in between. You pay American factory workers a moderate wage and within a few years they are unioned up and strong arming the company for more and more money.

If companies could get the job done here at decent prices they would.

I have seen both sides of unions. My dad was a union worker and retired from his factory job but he worked his ass off for 30 years to get it.

I know a guy that worked at the same place and used to show up still drunk from the night before 2 or 3 times a week and would sneak off and take naps in the bathroom and every time the company tried to fire him the union fought and kept his job.

I know a guy that works at another place and is a union worker and makes $25 an hour as a high school dropout. This guy has not worked a full work weak in over a year. Calling in, going home early etc. company cant fire his ass either.

Its a joke. You simply cant run a factory over here without it being full of fuckups that want to make more money than they deserve. For every guy like the old man you have 3 fuckups bleeding the system.

Unions where a good idea but in their current form they are just giant parasites that suck companies dry until theres no alternative but to get out of the US.

Seems the only true reason why this is happening is that western-world people think they can have everything and can do everything, than the chinese start mass production for us because we want to have 5 TVs, 4 computers (many PC enthusiasts even more), 3 cars and so on. It would be worth to pay 1k for iPad if people could live without need replacing it next year for something that is technically same just in different cover or more likely to be sharing the technology, but today yet everyone has the need to own everything. That's consumer society.

It's the original Luddite argument.

If you have ever visited a Chinese factory city, I would doubt you would ever wish to live there. In order to compete, the US would have to be equally lax on individual rights and the environment. Watch any given Walmart expose on the web to gain perspective on how they can offer goods so cheap while destroying all competition.

Would it also be fair to say that the Chinese "care" more about their jobs, and do what they must to keep up with their SOPs?

You can say bring the jobs home but no one would like what would happen as a result:

1. You pay more in wages, cost of goods go up, people cry crap is too expensive.
2. You pay similar wages to workers in China, no one takes the jobs, you hire illegals or end up off shoring again. lol

What about the poor scribes who have lost their jobs because of printing press?

Let's also ban shovels and heavy machinery and use tea spoons to dig ditches, that way there will be enough jobs for everyone.

Or we could just nuke a city to create jobs (to rebuild the city) in that region.

Uh, the video wasn't funny. The guy was just pointing out that jobs are being lost in this economy and that Congress was doing nothing about that. He didn't suggest that the iPad was bad because it eliminated inefficient methods, he even praised gains in efficiency.

Laughing at this just makes you look foolish.

"For there are some people who cannot grasp an intelligible truth, unless it be explained to them in every part and detail; this comes of their weakness of intellect: while there are others of stronger intellect, who can grasp many things from few."

Those of you laughing at that video might want someone smarter than you to explain that quote to you.

I think what he really wants to know is this: How is outsourcing to the Chinese slave labor force benefiting America in the long run?
The materials to build the device come from China, the manufacturing is done in China. All we really know how to do is advertise and take a cut. I would honestly love to see digital mom and pop stores which buy a supply of digital content they can sell online. At least local communities keep giving money back to themselves instead of overseas or to Apple's headquarters.

let's not embrace progress.

let students haul around pounds of textbooks. yeah !

pretty hypocritical that Jesse Jr bought an ipad himself while simultaneously criticizing it.

do as i say, not as i do.

who cares if china gets all these lowly jobs. Technology is making US engineering stronger.

Oh wait, that already happened and we're doing just fine.

I'm not seeing how this argument is relates to this situation. When a military stops using swords and armor it's because of an advance in technology. Moving jobs from one country to another for cheaper labor is not.

Darn, no edit button

My post above should read "I'm not seeing how your argument relates to this situation."

+1. A old union term I've heard before "if they can't do the job, promote them."
