It doesn't eliminate publishers in the sense that they are still needed to produce a professional product from a manuscript. It does however eliminate the brick & mortar book stores. However, if you check the books you've bought, you'll see that almost all the large publishers already print their books in China. The loss of sales from companies like Borders is being balanced by the gain from companies like Amazon.
It seems like what he's saying is sort of true. New technology can increase efficiency and make old jobs unnecessary.
What does he want to do about it.
1.) If you hate outsourcing why would you be for privatization? It's principally the same objective. The reason the USPS has lost money is because the vast package business went to Fedex and UPS instead of them, in most other countries Fedex and UPS pay royalties or licensing fees to the nation to work with their system. Only in the US is it an absolute free-for-all. If anything I would rather turn the USPS into a loss leader to destroy Fedex and UPS. Government controlled monopolies end up much better than privately controlled duopolies.
You can't really order a private company to do something in favor of that country's economy. Although it's true, every enterprise will be doing everything at lowest cost for the highest revenue it was never any different and it wont be. Simple as that. That's why most of household stuff from EU and US corporations is made in Asia. This argument has been around since the creation of machines themselves. Yet themselves have created new jobs while eliminating the need for some old ones. Just becomes some book printing companies will be no longer be in business doesn't mean those can't find jobs elsewhere.
A few questions for Mr. Jackson: (1) Why are you complaining to Congress? Apple is the one having the devices made overseas. Talk to Apple! (2) Why did you buy one if they are killing jobs? Your very purchase further adds to the job killing process, right? Supporting the company that is killing books? (3) I thought moving a demand for deforestation was a good thing for the people of this planet?
fedex has been desperately trying to buy the postal service. i believe they made 2 offers so far, both turned down.
theyre already setup to take it over. theyd keep it called "the us postal service", all the mail carriers, sorters etc.. they'd just integrate their smaller distribution network (very small compared to fedex) into fedex. as it is, they already rent a lot of space on fedex aircraft. we should just sell it to them imo.
also, outsourcing shit to china makes me nuts. i hate that shit, and the fact that they own most of our debt.
Fixed it for you.
And by "stupid environment rules" I mean the ones that allow the EPA to fine companies for building in a wetland when a puddle forms in their parking lot.
There are millions of jobs overseas that are simply there as tax shelters . Blame greedy corporations , not technological advancement.

Blame the greed government that forces corporations to relocate jobs over seas just to stay in business.
Blame the greedy consumer that is willing to knowingly comprise his morals for a cheaper product.
Actually you're wrong. I work IN publishing and the companies that print hardcopy are closing down left and right. For example; BMW has started including iPads with the owners manual on it with certain models of their cars. It can't be cheaper to put an iPad in the glovebox and when your iPad dies it's not going to be cheaper to replace than a hardcopy manual either.
What morals? I dont want to pay $1000 for an ipad because some high school dropout thinks he needs $30 an hour and a fucking pension to put the ipad sticker on the box.
Im all for creating American jobs and even think unions are a good idea but they have gone too far.
Give me an option made in the US thats not built like ass or overpriced and i will pick it 100% of the time. Like it or not because of how fucked things are over here having your factories overseas is the best option for the company AND the consumer.
Why do we assume there can be no in-between? I agree that $30/hour for a no-education job is too much. I'd pay more (albeit not much more) to know that workers that made the iPad weren't being poisoned or had high suicide rates.
Seriously.... Who is going to protect the jobs of all the blacksmiths out there? When the military stops using swords and armor, what are all of those unemployed blacksmiths going to do?
Oh wait, that already happened and we're doing just fine.
Whos assuming? There is no in between. You pay American factory workers a moderate wage and within a few years they are unioned up and strong arming the company for more and more money.
If companies could get the job done here at decent prices they would.
I have seen both sides of unions. My dad was a union worker and retired from his factory job but he worked his ass off for 30 years to get it.
I know a guy that worked at the same place and used to show up still drunk from the night before 2 or 3 times a week and would sneak off and take naps in the bathroom and every time the company tried to fire him the union fought and kept his job.
I know a guy that works at another place and is a union worker and makes $25 an hour as a high school dropout. This guy has not worked a full work weak in over a year. Calling in, going home early etc. company cant fire his ass either.
Its a joke. You simply cant run a factory over here without it being full of fuckups that want to make more money than they deserve. For every guy like the old man you have 3 fuckups bleeding the system.
Unions where a good idea but in their current form they are just giant parasites that suck companies dry until theres no alternative but to get out of the US.
If you have ever visited a Chinese factory city, I would doubt you would ever wish to live there. In order to compete, the US would have to be equally lax on individual rights and the environment. Watch any given Walmart expose on the web to gain perspective on how they can offer goods so cheap while destroying all competition.
