how much CPU (AM3) is needed to push CrossFire 5770's?

I'm thinkin about slappin on another 5770 but something tells me my 550BE (3.6GHz) isn't going to cut it.

No, I can't unlock the other cores.

Will a higher overclock on my dualcore suffice or do I need to look at quads?

TIA>

Crossfire -> Quad

depends on the game

if you are looking at bfbc2, then a triple or quad core would give you more performance

if you can overclock more, then overclock more, if you kill the chip then upgrade

+1 give it a try, if you don't like the results then just upgrade.

Grab yourself a nice Hex core chip. 1055T, or if you can spare the cash, 1090T. If you're gonna upgrade and spend $$$, make it future-proof.

quad minimum with a minimum clock of 3.6Ghz, preferably a phenom II and not an athlon II(L3 cache makes a big difference with games).

i agree with sirmonkey and as i said a phenom at 4ghz would give you a little head room. i have a core i7 870 @ 4ghz and i want more power for my sli. but thats me.

Thanks for all the responses guys

@shawnramsey - I game @ 1920x1200 - I believe that's still considered high-res but with all the multimonitor setups I don't know any more

So I'm basically hearing that I should push my dual core further - maybe to 3.8 - 4.0GHz and if it doesn't hold up, go at LEAST Phenom II Quad.
Kinda the answer I predicted.

Now I'm probably getting ahead of myself but -
With a Quad and two 5770's, is Eyefinity gaming a realistic possiblity at say 3x 1920x1080 resolution?

with low settings, you might be able to push older titles, I'd say sell your 5770's and grab a 6950 2gb if you want a good eyefinity experience and possibility of unlocking to 6970
