Some random guy decides the best place to commit a crime was the International Security Conference 2011. While on camera, the dude walks right up to a booth and steals an iPad. So far the guy hasn't been caught so I guess I should hold off on calling him "stupid criminal" until after he is caught. ;)

He walked up to the Advanced Technology Video booth, looked around to make sure the coast was clear and slipped an unsecured iPad into his bag of freebies. I didn’t see this happen for myself, but word quickly spread around the floor and later a Las Vegas TV station reported on the incident.

From reading the article and watching the video, I find it ironic that they were making a big deal about how security cameras were everywhere when people with fake badges had a easier time getting access to the exhibits than people with legit badges.

You mean like DRM? Yep I certainly believe that. Make things difficult for the legit people, but easier for pirates and criminals.

Caught or not, he's still stupid because of all the things he could have stolen, he chose an iPad.

Yes, an obvious and easy jab. Har, har, har.

Not if he turn it around and eBay it.

Probably a publicity stunt by Apple, " people are willing to go to extremes to acquire our products".

The better question.

Which is dumber? The guy who steals at a security conference where there is every type of security camera imaginable? (One could argue about ball size, density and material they are made of) or an iPad or any apple product for that matter being at a security conference? :D

He had balls of lead and a brain to match :D :p

Seriously, unless Apple was the only one with an unsecured booth (easy joke there for anyone who wants to take the setup) then why the hell didn't he steal something worth more than a lousy $500... If I was gonna steal something and risk going to jail I'd make sure it was worth a minimum of 10 Grand....

I'll have to check out this vid b/c the link doesn't work for me from work.

Really guys if he really is that stupid... what does that say about the technology.

Are these guys not the best at security, should they not be consultants on where to install and how to use them properly?

I think what this video shows is not the worlds dumbest criminal, but the worlds largest group of dim salesmen.

And for those matter of time before he is caught people...
your right...
I had a security camera setup at about 5 years ago, it was the best money could rent, 36 hour playback, compression, IP secure login to a server etc etc etc...
Someone came by the job site loaded up about 5K in stainless and left, faces licence plate, make of truck, it will only be a matter of time before those idiots are caught as well.

Sure it is.

What if you were to climb to the top of Mount Everest and then steal it?

I can imagine a very cheesy "Indiana Jones" type scene in a booby-trapped temple that ends with Indy grabbing an ipad/iphone/etc off the stone pedestal in the end... In fact I think I saw something like that in the 80s, though I cant remember what product it was selling...
