According to this article, Nintendo will announce a new Wii HD at E3. The article claims that the new Wii will launch next year and will be as powerful as the 6 year old hardware in the Xbox 360 and PS3. Rumor has it that it might even be able to play DVDs by then too. :D

We have confirmed with multiple sources that this new home system is capable of running games at HD resolutions. There are conflicting reports, however, as to whether its graphics will be comparable to those on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 – meaning it could surpass or fall short of those systems. Either way it will offer competitive specifications.

probably won't be more powerful than both xbox or PS3...I'll be happy if it's just as powerful...Nintendo needs to enter the HD era...even if it is behind.

Crazy thing here is that Nintendo could be the first console to push 1080P standard resolution for all it's games

Could be, but they won't. It would alienate too much of their target demographic (extreme casual).

I doubt it will do more then simply match the 360, I seriously doubt it will match the PS3.

That said, I will no doubt keep my eyes open for it. Not going to hold my breath, but hey a new console is a new console even if I use it once every three months. So long as they don't pull the bullshit they did with the wii and demo it black for the entire development and then launch with white as the only crappy option.

since the resolution of HDTVs stays put at 1080P and the GPUs grow more powerful, Nintendo could use a GPU equivalent to a HD 3870 or 9800GTX which is super old by today's standards and get awesome graphics out of it for a relatively cheap price. It would surpass the PS3's 7900GT equivalent GPU and the Xbox 360's X1900GT GPU.
Wow those are old chips huh?
Amazing to think what would come out of having newer GPUs to play with in a console.

I'd like to say this console version 1.5 strategy will fail miserably but I dont want to underestimate the gullibility of the dumb masses after they fell for the Wii which was basically an overclocked Gamecube with motion controls

Since it's processor is a derivitive of the Xbox 360's processor, stepping it up to the same would be pretty straight forward.

I'm hoping it will push 1080p. It won't cost them much to do it now, since the GPUs that can push 1080p easily these days are old and extremely cheap. Plus, I'm sure Nintendo is well aware of the complaints they received from basically every hardcore Nintendo gamer about both the graphics and content of their games. I hope the Wii HD will be their first step to getting back their original fan base.

graphics, yeah, content.... maybe mario kart: sunshine? :p

If this allowed me to run some N64 games at 1080p as well, i'd be sold.

Price is at $200 or less, launch the next zelda, mario galaxy, mario kart, mario brothers, etc.....and I don't care if its better or worse graphics then the 360/ps3.

Reposting what I posted in the Console Gaming subforum:

Makes sense with the Wii apparently going to $149 starting May 15th. (updated with a K-Mart sku sheet showing the drop)
http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/12/rumor-nintendo-dropping-wii-price-to-150-on-may-15th/

Unless it ditches motion controls and friend codes (highly unlikely) and has an online feature set similar to the PSN (at minimum)....or a ridiculously low price (also highly unlikely)....no buy for me.

edit Now IGN's stirring the pot some more.

According to multiple reports today, Nintendo will reveal a new console at E3 this coming June.

Game Informer first reported that the console is capable of running games at "HD resolutions." Our sources have said the the console is significantly more powerful than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and that Nintendo's intent is to recapture the hardcore market. Another source said it is capable of 1080p resolutions.

Nintendo is reportedly showing the console to publishers to garner interest for a late 2012 launch.

Additional sources tell IGN that Nintendo will release a pre-announcement this month with a full reveal expected at E3 and that the console will be backwards compatible with current Wii software.

If this ends up being true, and they're going back to old school, regular controller gameplay - this could be awesome.
I love Nintendo's games, I just don't really care much about the motion control stuff anymore.

I doubt it will do more then simply match the 360, I seriously doubt it will match the PS3.

Tech advances pretty rapidly. Even if they went with hardware that is 4 years old right now, getting 1080P output from a fixed hardware set is cake. The GameCube could do 480P and 16:9 and it was released a full decade ago.

Its easy to downscale things back to 480P if people have old TVs.

It would make sense to me.

Make it just powerful enough to have graphics that look slightly better than the current Wii, but then run that at full 1080p.

Keep everything that is current about the Wii, but add in the 'Classic Controller Pro' with built-in accelerometer, without needing to tether to a Wiimote. Throw in 3D, now that glasses-less TVs are just starting to come out, and they'll have timed it perfectly to beat Sony and Nintendo to the punch.

Innovate when innovation is stagnant, leapfrog on specs when innovation abounds. (aka, now that we have Playstation Move and Kinect catching up with Wii, leapfrog 360 and PS3 on specs.)

I'm not sure if it's appropriate to say that Wii would not risk their target demographic considering they tried to create a standard with motion controls over game pad.

I want an HD Mario Kart and Smash Brothers...and I'm sure my wife will want another Zelda. Can't say I care about the other franchises, although if it's in the same league as the 360/PS3 maybe I'll get Nintendo's version of a multi-platform game for once.

I'm not so sure. I used to think that too until I bought Final Fantasy VII from PS3 Store and tried to play it on my 46" television. Such a pixelated piece of shit. Be nice if Sony thought to include GLide emulation with Final Fantasy VII.

The Wii was never targeted at the same users as the PS3 and the Xbox.
It's amazing that there are still so many clueless elitist out there that don't understand basic marketing.

Plus, if you have young kids, the Wii has a much better choice of age apropriate games. Especially if you also include all the game cube games.

The biggest problems with the current Wii is the low resolution and the lack of flash storage (512kb) for game saves and downloadable software (WiiWare).

I think a system with 1080p video, support for more controllers (like 8), at least 8GB of built in flash, and backwards compatibility with the existing Wii games/controllers would sell pretty good. They could even drop the game cube compatability as most these games have Wii or WiiWare versions.

Main problem would be lack of homebrew or the USB loader apps :)

highly doubt it is gonna be $200 or less with new hardware, since the wii is gonna be $150 very soon and not eol for the foreseeable future; and also nintendo's track record of never selling their console's below cost. my guess would be at least $250 at launch (with the possibility of going up to $300), assuming they add a decent gpu capable of pushing 1080p (8800gt/ 3870 level) and integrate a hard drive.

i would wager the "xbox 720" and ps4 will probably launch a year after the wii hd in the fall of 2013 since both ms and sony have recently started development of their next consoles. looks like the next gen console wars are about to begin.

meh
Power Console FTW

err the NDA for Power Console has been lifted by now, right ?

If they can do it in the same Wii form factor, that will be pretty cool. Isn't the Wii about 1/2 the size of the other consoles?

To compete with other consoles and to have better relations with third-party developers...Ninetendo needs to shirk more of the extreme casual gamers...I could see them having 1080p this late in the game...think it would be easy for them technologically speaking...I mean PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii came out like 6 years ago so...no prob

Hasn't calling a system 'as powerful as _____' become somewhat arbitrary nowadays? There are so many variables involved in current systems that it's almost a meaningless claim.

This new Wii could, for example, have the otherwise exact same specs as either console while upgrading just the ROPs or shader units would change the field entirely.

Yeah it's as powerful as Sony's, and Microsoft's soon to be last gen systems, way to break the cycle Nintendo:rolleyes:

Um, you do know you can do that now right? Look up N64 emulators for PC. This stuff has been around for over a decade. Just don't ask where to get roms.

BTW, this also applies to PS2, GameCube, and Wii. All playable on a modern PC in HD. Having an adapter to plug in controllers to you PC will go a long way.

Tell you what, here's a link to NGEmu to get the emulators.

So more first party ports of nintendos tired batch of nintendo games. Can't wait for mario, zelda, princess peach, pokemon HD...:p

Hope they release a Mario all star hd, then for sure I would buy one.

Well, at least Nintendo will be the only one to make money on day one, no matter how powerful they make it.

The Wii HD should have a Penis on the top. You can sit on it after you buy one and make Nintendo fucking you official.

A consoles catching up with consoles. If this doesn't tell us how sad things are in the console market nothing will.

I wonder if dumb people will buy it for 800 dollars on ebay and craigslist like the original one.
Now that was pretty sad and funny at the same time.
