I have a sickness.

You have the disease MOARitis. Common in hardware enthusiasts. Don't despair though, there is a cure, it's called wifeymoxil and if that doesn't cure it, kidscillin.

I'm currently evading the above two cures, thankfully, although having a girlfriend as of late has begun to eat up funds.

Seriously though, anyone else have experience with both 2x 580 and 3x 6970?

you're in the wrong place if you're expecting people to tell you not to. did I need to say that?

OP, does 580 SLI already meet your needs? I'd imagine it does. If it doesn't I know this sounds insane, but it's not a bad idea. Sell your 580s for ~$450 each, and for ~$100 on top of that you have 6970 TriFire. It would be a significant upgrade, though as I've already said I can't imagine that you need it.

Honestly it's not an upgrade I *need*. I do have a 5760x1200 Eyefinity setup but I don't play enough of my games in Eyefinity for me to warrant it. I prefer to have a proper HUD and readable text and in a lot of the games I play that doesn't work out well :(

If one symptom of that sickness is a fever, then the only prescription may be more cowbell.

Although it's very important that I mention, if you are seriously considering TriFire with boxy-style cards, read up AnandTech's review of 6970 TriFire vs. 580 TriSLI. The 6900 series does not do well in TriFire, the cards but up so close that the middle one burns up. Make sure your MoBo is well-spaced for it.

Anyone who would buy used GTX 580's for $450 should have their heads examined. I think people tend to overestimate the value of used items on this forum quite frequently. Still your advice is sound, but I wouldn't expect more than $375 to $400 for used GTX 580's and even that might depend somewhat on what brand they are and what the warranty on them is like.

Honestly, I don't think the OP really needs to change out his video cards. I'm running dual GTX 580's in SLI and they chew up and spit out almost any game I throw at them. I'm running a much higher resolution in games than the OP is as well. 8064x1600 (bezel corrected) is much harder on a system than 5760x1200 is. There are very few games I can't max out and fewer that I need to drop the resolution on. They do exist, but most of them aren't games I play regularly. AvP, Crysis 1, Crysis Warhead, and Metro 2033 are the only ones that come to mind.

Isn't the difference between 2 6970's in crossfire compared to 3 6970's in crossfire not that big of a leap on cost per performance?. I know i read some article about it on Anandtech's site. Dont know performance tho on a Eyefinity setup

Well if you do buy them you are helping the economy at least...

I lol'd at this :).

To the guy who said it doesn't help much, Ryan Smith over at Anandtech did a writeup exploring that very question, and found that in fact the third card in a Crossfire setup does indeed help significantly, particularly in the realm of minimum framerates which means that it is much more likely to better your experience than you might think.

Just be very careful using those!

Too much could leave you with an adverse reaction known as middle-age crysifilis.

write a country song telling how upgrading ruined your life. u might make lots of money that upgrading wont be soo bad with all the money you can make. just like some country singers write about how their dog died and other sad songs.

Find something worthwhile to do with your life.
You mad bro?

Dan, I think that's pretty solid advice. It's not so much that I have a performance deficit as I like to try new things as well, but it would probably be much more fruitful to wait for the 7000-series or 600-series refreshes to upgrade again.

Like working on cars...no wait, thats buying new parts to make performance better.

Like working out....no wait, thats still buying stuff to improve your physique

Like going to school....no still buying

Like doing what you do...probably still gotta buy..

Hmm....I think i'd stick with his current hobby.

I dint think any of those cures work. I've got wifeymoxcil and kidcillin and have even had to undergo two-job therapy for the last 9 months and I still find myself wanting to buy a X6 to hold me over til Bulldozer drops. There is no cure, there is no logic and there is no use in fighting it.

I can't help you.... .just got hit with MOARitis myself.... my third 6950 is on the way along with a Gigabyte UD7 board for the 2500k....

Haha, a great thread to brighten my day, except I suddenly feel an urge to buy another gpu for crossfire....

THAT is the problem; we are all enablers.

This is like hosting an AA meeting at a brewery.

I work out 5 times a week, I have a college degree, I drive a 2011 Subaru WRX STI.. I think I have that list covered.

I think your missing the point, someone shouldn't bag on someone else's hobby regardless of how they feel about it...unless it's something morbid like infant cannibalism...then I can agree.

Oh I know, I was being somewhat sarcastic.. I don't see how much money I spend on computer parts reflects in any way how "worthwhile" my life is. We are in agreeance :)

Not bagging his hobby, I've been into computers for now about 30 years, and there isn't much point in blowing $1000 on something that is next to useless.

Like become a vegetarian?

Not a bad start..

Vegetables are not food. They are what food eats. :D Why knock yourself down a rung on the ladder that is the food chain?

In all seriousness though, it doesn't make you a better person and I fail to see how it would be "worth while." Some may cite health reasons but plenty of people who eat meat live long and healthy lives. People who don't eat meat often don't get the proteins they need either.
