The latest Linux operating system was released on Friday. This flavor is Ubuntu 11.04 otherwise known by the new tougher sounding labeling system as Natty Narwhal Beta 1. This newest edition has loads of new features and a new interface.
This will be the first of the big distros to include 2.6.38 and it will make the Natty experience for even current Ubuntu 10.10 users better.

Woohoo! Just a few more weeks until the final release.

What's with trying to put a jumbo sized iOS-like experience on the PC? This just reeks of a bad idea.

Same thing can be said of using GNOME. :p I'd like to ask why no one else thinks GNOME is an awful desktop manager, but there are a sufficient number people already complaining about it, and one major distro maker ditching it as a default soon.

Ya know you can still use KDE/GNOME/etc in 11.04 right?

The more I see of Unity, the more it looks like a colossally bad idea. Everywhere I look, there are fundamental flaws and design problems that are just SO OBVIOUS that I can't believe Ubuntu's developers so blatantly missed them. it's like they went out of their wait to implement every UI no-no in the book.

Icon presentation, window metrics, color scheme, font choice. Most of it needs to be chucked out and done over at this point.

I agree that Unity seems aimed at medium resolution mobile devices and that it lacks the polish of even the uncompleted Meego. It isn't called "the netbook shell" for nothing. :p

It could wind up nothing more than a odd turn on the Ubuntu desktop roadmap, or its issues could be addressed and improved to the point of a first class desktop manager. Want to completely write it off already?

Gnome is one of the worse desktop managers out there and the Gnome team is full of incredibly ignorant, big headed assholes, so I look forward to its slow demise starting with 11.04's release.

I will reserve my judgement on Ubutu's new interface after I try it.

But as for Gnome 3... I HATE IT! I tried to like it but ... I just couldn't. If I don't like Ubuntu's new interface, I'll probably stay with Gnome 2.x or switch to XFCE.

Please enlighten me on the known issues with Gnome. I have been using Ubuntu daily for about year now and even though I find it much more solid than WinXP; I still find the desktop crashes expectingly. Some times I can track this to a buggy Chrome browser update or the like, but sometimes I can't. The competing GUI for Linux is KDE. Is it superior? I would like to use linux more and move for video editing. The software is very good; but it seems the desktop is rather flaky. Is KDE superior? Should I move to another distro of Linux and use KDE??

I really disliked the ui. I like certain parts of gnome and certain parts of kde. Right now I go with kde because it looks fancy.

Tried unity, the initial implementation, and it sucked, however this looks to be updated from the one in 10.10, only main use i can see is using it for my tablet, otherwise GNOME (2.x) is going back on mainly because i cant stand xfce, and KDE is meh to me...

I like Ubuntu fundamentally but wouldn't use it myself. I tried macpup 520 on my eee pc last week and was really impressed, especially for such a low profile distribution. There was no configuring necessary, and it is so small, it installs itself into your RAM. Noobuntu just keeps getting more and more bloated, hopefully this new version trims some of the fat from the last iteration.
