The dell streaks are selling on ebay for $330 +. Very nice deal and shouldn't last long.
BluRay and non-Q quadcore options.

Wish I had waited a few more months and bought this laptop. Oh well. Mine's still pretty decent.
15.6" LED 1080p
i7 - 720QM
6GB Ram
500GB HD
8x DVDRW
And the ATI HD5730 with 1GB.

Paid the same price as this.

This looks like a pretty hot deal

Hmm, the default CPU doesn't support aes new instructions or vt-d

anybody buying this? i want in on the $99 streak. i'd pay close to $150 or so, should cover tax, shipping, and make your laptop a bit cheaper.

Hopefully they have them ready to ship. My sister in law back in February tried to buy a Dell XPS with the new i7 and they set it to back order until April or May. This was right after Sandy Bridge 6 series chipset snafu and then a report that increased smartphone orders were causing delays in notebook orders being fullfilled. And of course now we got some factories in Japan being shutdown ( I know Texas Instruments has shutdown 2 facilities over there temporarily).

I can't imagine that 6 cell battery lasts terribly long though with that hardware.

depends if the xps supports optimus or not. If it does the 525 should be turned off most of the time and not drawing power.

Nice deal! Tempting... 9 cell option with optimus...

I bit, I spent about 6 hours+ reading about this laptop and it's hardware before I made my decision. It sounds like they did a lot of things right: screen, speakers, Sandy Bridge, Optimus, etc.

I went for the 6 cell hoping that the power saving optimizations in Sandy Bridge would still give me decent battery life. Also I didn't want that nub under the laptop with the 9 cell battery has on it.

I added a lot of upgrades, and went for the 2720QM so I'd have vt-d (assuming the motherboard supports it too) and AES NI.

I'm planning on trying to sell the Streak, locally first, to offset the cost some.

did you find any reports about the battery life?

did you find any reports about the battery life?

I just found a battery life test here: http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/dell-xps-15-sandy-bridge.aspx?mode=benchmarks
It is not 1:1 though. The L501x was a dual core with a 6 cell battery, and the L502x was a quad with a 9 cell battery.

Based on this article about the L501x, which is using a 1st gen i5 and the 435m video card, I'm hoping it will be equal or slightly better battery life. That's still good battery life for a 6 cell IMO.

It's not clear to me how the 2nd gen i7 mobile power consumption compares to a 1st gen i5 dual core, nor how the 525m compares to the 435m though.

I also found a hard drive caddy for it, which fits into the optical drive.

Hm you can upgrade to a 540m however it looks like its just higher clocked, no real difference.

Note to buyers:

Notebook Review indicates that you have to disassemble the entire laptop just to replace the HDD?

I guess I'll get to do some disassembly, and get familiar with the laptop ;)

Actually it doesn't look bad at all: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xpsl501x/en/sm/hdd.htm
well you have to be careful popping the palmrest off since it contains the touchpad which is attached to the rest of the system by what appear to be the standard tiny ribbon cables with obscenely fragile connector clips; but it's still better than most upgrades that need to go in through the top.

Well I bit. Backlit keyboard with everything else as is in front post for 1012 shipped to NY NY. Seems like a good deal to me.

Is it worthwhile upgrading the i7-2630QM to i7-2720QM? Disregarding the higher clock speeds, the i7-2720QM has aes and vt-d. Vt-d imo is worthless in a laptop. Software supporting aes acceleration can be viewed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AES_instruction_set
Am I lacking the imagination as to why I need aes acceleration? Any new killer apps or future needs I am not accounting for at the moment?

They took the i7-2630QM out of the options now. Think they messed up? Cus before it did say i7-2720QM but now it only says M cus it is only a dual core. And they also have an i5 option now. I hope my order doesnt get cancelled.

I noticed that as well as the OP link deal is dead. However, if you build the model from one of the cheaper base setups the 2630qm is still an upgrade option. I bet your order is ok if payment has been processed etc.

Sweet, I cant wait 3 weeks. I guess I have no choice.

Got my "confirmation" email. This system should serve quite well for occasional gaming (ie. I'm not at home or the desktop got fried) and mostly work and web surfing. Wish I'd had the cash to sport for the blu-ray drive but oh well.

The cheap streak was a nice little bonus... though apparently I'll have to root it to get the use out it I'm looking for.

Now the long wait. Shame it's such a long build time for what was a Dell configuration.

Just to comment on adding a second HDD to this lappy. I have a XPS 1645. i did the mod to add the 2nd HDD. its very easy, just time consuming. if you have any questions about the procedure PM me. ill be happy to assist anyone that needs it

My wife got hers after more than a month and two announced delays (though I complained after the second one and it showed up the next business day following many apologies from their end).

This is a beautiful laptop. Amazing screen, in particular. I helped her buy pretty much the highest-end version that came to about $1800. Very good build quality and aesthetics and the hardware specs are superb.

Wow it just arrived, and Im blown away by the quality of it, the screen really is amazing, speakers are awesome, and the keyboard is beautiful!

Is this the same glossy screen that they were selling a couple of months ago that was discontinued for a while?

if it is like any other Dell, a large access door comes off adn the HDD is right there.....

When I orderd my studio 1558 (when the core i series first came out) it was a 3 week wait as well. I got the i5 option with ATi Radeon Mobility 4570 graphics and I have been pleased with it overall and it will last just about 5 hours on a charge with screen brightness at 60%

Its not like any other Dell, you have to disassemble the entire laptop like the other guy stated.
I did it, while not difficult it takes awhile and you have like 30 screws sitting around.
