Dunn about ya'll, but I get tired of hearing about Crysis.

It's not even a good game. Yeah it's hell on hardware but so what? It's all flash with no substance.

To each his own man, to each his own. To me it felt like it was all about the bling.

It depended on how you approached the battles. I'd like, sneak in and take out one dude stealthed, go speed mode and run to another location, re-stealth, snipe another, speed run into some bushes and then go into maximum strength mode, snipe a few guys, etc... It's different from other generic, cookie cutter FPSes.

I am not at all underwhelmed with a single 460GTX 1Gb at 1920x1080......and I have seen evidence that in the games I play SLI at this resolution would provide little to no payback. I can, for instance, run Crysis Warhead wide open on details even with CCC Screenshot setting with 16xAA .

Perhaps the 6950 is a different story?

Your requirements for smooth gameplay are different than mine. I notice a lot of stutter in many games when the framerate gets below 40fps so that's the minimum that I want to see at max detail.

Anandtech's reviews that contain the 460 show that it can only muster an average of 34fps in Warhead at 1920x1200 with Gamer settings and 4xAA. Minimum for the 460 is 23fps while the 6950 hits 34fps. That's not acceptable for me and I can only imagine how bad it would be at 16xAA.

Got my 6970's and all I can say is WOW...

Every single game I own is maxxed out and butter smooth with massive AA/AS

This wasn't a mistake at all!

you cannot max out Crysis Warhead with a single GTX 460 (or SLI 460's for that matter) and maintain playable framerates. per this AnandTech review, even a heavily overclocked 460 (EVGA FTW model) achieves 40.8 fps average and 28.7 fps min at 1920x1200. you would certainly see gains moving to SLI. i've played it with a single 460 and with SLI 460's and the gains are huge (as shown in the Anand link). i've seen big gains in all the games i play. i'm not preaching SLI as the second coming of christ, just disputing your claim of not seeing any 'payback'. also running 16xAA will completely saturate your vram and then some. if i recall correctly i had to settle on 4xAA in Warhead to ensure i didn't bust 1GB of vram.

well then im just a liar....sounds like thats all you will believe

i do my testing similar to the way they do it here at [H] in that i set my settings and play. If i can play the game enjoyably and without being distracted by any performance or graphical issues, then it's good. If I am playing and the game is hitching or giving me trouble...then i back off the settings.

I run Warhead with the MWLL mod which actually steps it up another notch from Warhead, and i play it wide open, 1920x1080 using the CCC 3.0 setting of "4+" or "Screenshot" combined with 8xQ or 16xQ AA and love every minute of it. Last time I checked my fps were averaging in the 45-50 range but I also have a fairly high-clocked BIOS modded 460GTX 1Gb thats faster than any off the shelf 460GTX, backed by an AMD Phenom II Quad at 3.7Ghz, 2400Mhz NB bus speed and DDR3 1650Mhz memory speed.

I am not interested in SLI as SLi'ing two of these 460's would be around $450 and then we're into 580GTX territory which is the way I would go instead of two 460's. I just know of guys with 460GTX SLI rigs who have had terrible luck getting much more performance out of a second 460GTX instead of just grabbing say a HD6950, flashing to a HD6970 2gb and rockin' out.

i'm not calling you a liar, i suppose my post was worded more bluntly than i intended it. it sounds like you're more tolerant of low framerate than most. regardless, i recommend not discounting SLI 460's as giving you no 'payback'...the results are there. i picked up both of my Hawks for $315 AR so deals can be found. i agree with you, i'd rather have a single card that performs equally but it's quite a bit more money (at the moment) to achieve that.

well, there's only so much discussion to be had about how much your 6970's rock. but here: YOUR 6970'S ROCK

hahaha, thanks for the reinforcement on that front!

Maybe time to go tri fire? :)

you got a really good deal.....I haven't seen 1Gb Hawks for $150 anywhere....not even with rebates

Do it ... we only live once ... if you can ... do it!

:) If you were talking about buying a super expensive xpto card i would say "think that through"... but 6970's are at good pricing ... so ... why the hell not! I just bought 2 6970's with waterblocks too :)

So ... you will never know how tri feels like until you tri-it!
A friend of mine is using tri-sli with 470's and the freaking cards are running everything maxed out and they are at 40-50% gpu usage! eheheheh

When money is not a driving factor, what's wrong with overkill?

It's like owning a car or motorcycle that can go incredibly fast. You'll probably never come close to driving at its limits, but owning it can still be satisfying.

i really think that many people bash those options for

a) Had the means to go with that option but decided not to go that direction, so everyone that will go that direction will be flamed

b) Don't have the means to buy it and flame everyone that do

c) Don't take in consideration that there are users that buy 1 graphic solution ( either 1, 2 or 3 cards ) with the intention of having a life span of 1 to 2 years

d) Users only think about the "today" needs ... ( ok ... it's similar to point c ) so they only judge that at X resolution people won't need more than Y graphical power ... without adding to that equation the " what about in 8 months or so " ...

I did buy the 2 6970 first because i got them for the price of a single gtx580 ...
secondly because my last gtx295 had a lifespan of 2 years ! So ... i hope i will have a good lifespan with this solution too :)

So yeah... if it makes you happy going Tri-CF ... do it! You'll be happy, others will be frustrated, others will flame you, other will be happy to see some tri-CF results ... and economy will definitely thank you :)
