HP Pavilion dm1z

I recently ordered mine and not expected to be built til mid april :(

but I was looking to put in a 1TB HDD in there but I know they are oversized 2.5" Just wanted to know if they would fit in the DM1Z. Though I want a 7200RPM HDD but 1TB only comes in 5400RPM so I probably going to have drop down to 750GB to get the 7200RPM. I know it'll kill my battery level. but I didn't notice much of a battery difference when I went from 5400RPM to 7200RPM on my current netbook, though can definitely feel the heat difference. Acer KAV60 (1.6ghz N270 single core with hyper threading via 1gb RAM and 10.1" Screen).

Figure its time for an upgrade. The DM1Z probably going to be about twice the speed of the KAV60. can't wait for it to come in. this thing is lags. can't handle my heavy multi-tasking.

7200 will have neglegable impact on battery like.... we're talking about 5 mins

I'm sorry but this particular reasoning is just totally lost upon me why in the world would someone want to use an OS that is totally insecure and is 9.5 years old based upon technology that can be traced back to 2000?

See, this is exactly what i mean. Windows XP was perfectly fine until a few years ago, but now that the new piece of bloated shineware is out, all of a sudden it has become "totally" insecure. All those years that i've used XP i was probably being compromised all the time, and didn't even notice it! Security is a meaningless buzzword. In the 18+ years i've been using computers, i never had a security problem beyond catching a virus once or twice. Big deal.

Can anyone comment on how well Starcraft 2 plays on the Zacate systems? Is it an enjoyable experience? What are the highest playable settings?

I'm curious about this myself. Of course, it would be best if anybody were willing to test this game with more then 2GB of memory. I have a mid-range desktop system (phenom II X3 at 3.2 ghz with a Gefore 460 with 1GB of video mem), which is considerably faster then this system but the game still ran like crap until i upgraded my memory to 4GB.

Security IS impotent. Malware has gotten much more insidious in recent years. Fact is you can goto a website you trust and find your computer infected by "drive by download". You may not even know you have a piece of malware on your computer if you've been hit with a drive by.

What is a drive by download?:

windows xp vs vista vs 7 botnet infections:

Just a couple of reviews of windows 7:

7 took a little while to get used to from my jump from XP, but overall once I got used to it I really do enjoy using windows 7 much more.
Gaming performance is better with 7 too :D Benchmarks prove that. DX11 is a nice side effect of switching to 7 ;)

Unless you're running windows on a really old bit of hardware, windows 7 is what is recommended

If you really like the old school "Look" of windows 2000 you can change that in the personalization menu

No, it's been crap for a while now. Yes, even during Vista's days.

It will be a big deal when your computer gets compromised and a key logger grabs all of your user id's and passwords.......

there are security issues that will never be patched in x86 windows becuase it will totally break app compatability and it's even worse with older OS like XP/2K. By sandboxing x86 inside of a x64 OS all of those security concerns are mitigated

Except neither of those things are likely going to happen. Indeed, i'm running Windows XP as we speak on my main desktop, and i'm yet to experience anything even remotely as horrific at that. This is like Linux zealots trying to argue that Microsoft systems are so unstable as to be near nigh unusable. To call it an exaggeration would be an understatement.

Questionable and biased sources and numbers that don't really mean all that much in the long run. Excuse me if i act a bit nonplussed. Security simply isn't a big problem, and if we were to take Microsoft claims at face value their operating systems would be damn near impregnable by now. Its like those detergent commercials. Every year they advertise a new product which promises to be more efficient then the previous one, but they have been doing this for so long the only way to make those solutions more efficient would be to use sulfuric acid as their main cleaning agent.

Gaming performance is better with 7 too :D Benchmarks prove that.

Please.

DX11 is a nice side effect of switching to 7 ;)

DX11 provide nothing of real value, particularly as long as modern video games remain capped around console hardware. Besides, the majority of modern games are dumped down pieces of crap not worth playing in the first place, and most of them wouldn't run on this little unit to begin with, so that's hardly a selling point.

If you really like the old school "Look" of windows 2000 you can change that in the personalization menu

Except it looks like ass, because the shiny look is so integrated in every facet of the interface the windows 2000 theme just looks like a broken mess. With a little work i was able to remove some of the biggest annoyances, but at that point i was running too many third party applications and the system just felt dirty, so i got rid of the whole thing and put XP back in place.

If it comes to that i'd rather just run Linux as my main system.

BTW, i just borrowed an atom machine with a glossy screen, and, i just can't get used to it. Any other AMD fusion based machine worth considering that has a matte screen?

Yep. The Lenovo x120e. Make sure to use a coupon....there is almost always one out.

No one's stopping you but i doubt that it will be any better for you. I mean after all your lack of knowledge on basic security concepts leads me to believe that you will have issues with any modern verson of an OS outside of a Mac where it's pretty much all hidden from you in the first place.....

I mean after all your lack of knowledge on basic security concepts

My knowledge of basic security concepts is good enough to recognize a meaningless buzzword when i see it. I don't telly around concepts that seem good on paper but have marginal value in a practical sense. Linux is in fact far more secure then Windows 7 will ever be. At that point, why even bother using a Microsoft operating system? They will always be insecure!

Sorry, but what matters to me is practicability. That is why i don't like Vista, or Windows 7. I prefer a minimal, bare bone environment where i am in control of every basic aspect of my computer without hassle. That is one of the reasons i never bothered with a Macintosh, because i don't like when companies interfere with everything i do and force me to use their way or the highway. Since Vista, Microsoft has been adopting a similar philosophy and that's when they pretty much lost me. Windows 7 was supposed to be a return to common sense, but its pretty much the same thing, except slightly more stable maybe. I don't like Windows 7 is precisely because its too similar to Mac OS. It took me a long time to even get accustomed to XP, since Windows 2000 was so comfortable for me, but after XP became stable it was easy to strip out all the annoyances. Those new operating systems by Microsoft are just too radically different to allow a similar transition.

That's a strawman argument. Security may be important, but Windows 7 is not so secure vis a vis other operating systems as to make the latter near night unusable.

Troll on, brother.

LOL, you're so full of BS it's coming out your ears...

Everyone stay on point, if you want to discuss security and operating systems their's a sub section on it in this forum. This thread is dedicated to the dm1z and like-mobile technologies.

Is the DM1Z being built and shipped from the US or out of country? If so where? and how long did it take?

I still have bout week and half left on mine :-(

I'm pretty sure it's made in china...
can anyone confirm that?

yes it's made in china, mine shipped directly from shanghai

it took a total of 18 days from order date to receive it in my hands

shipping only took 5 days

I just received mine a few days ago and love it! Removed most the bloatware and tweaked services and it is much better than my old DV2000 Turion 64. Especially the graphics. My biggest improvement was using SKype (I am in Iraq) Calls became much clearer!

As for the guy wanting XP on it. One thing to mention is that XP is a 32 bit OS (the 64 bit version getting limited support) After using a 64 bit OS I wont be going back. And I do have control of Win 7. I went into services and disabled or modded what I didnt like. Simple. XP hung around for so long because of Vista. Win 7 is XP on steroids.

Anyone try running linux on one of these dm1z's?
I don't mean trying it then going back to windows after a few days. I mean really use linux?

I tried it and it worked great except the wifi wouldnt work and for some reason could not get dual monitors to work. recently found a possible fix for the wifi on one of the ubuntu forums. Admittedly, only did it for a bit, but I can still boot to linux and will do so. I am still learning it.

Were you able to get the HDMI port to function (video+audio)?

What distro are you using?

jeeze my netbook finally has a status change of shipped :-/. they take their time over there. was "in production" for over 10 days

I was totally going to order a DM1Z with my tax refund, but when I went to buy it, there was a ship date of May 4th. Took my money to walmart and bought a 3DS.

Not really comparable, but if I have to wait till May 4th to get it, I might as well wait and see what comes out.

Check HPs website for the DM1-3020us, its the quick-ship model of the DM1z, comes with free 2-day shipping too!

I have seen the 3DS and I suspect it is cooler than a DM1z.

received my DM1Z yesterday! Took 3 weeks and 1 day for me to receive it from the day I placed it! Compared to my Acer KAV60 netbook, this is noticeably faster!. bigger screen, brighter screen. Only thing I don't like is the touchpad. the Acer KAV60 Touchpad is much better. The Keyboard on the acer, I got used to. I believe its 93% full size. the DM1z is a full size keyboard which I need to get used to. The touchpad on the Dm1z has no scroll thing on it. The acer, on the far right of it I can slide my finger up and down and the page or whatever I'm on will scroll up and down.

Overall it is a nice upgrade from the Acer. Now I just need to put the finishing touches on the netbook (8GB [2x 4GB sticks) Ram and 750GB 7200RPM HDD.

My DM1z arrived a couple days ago, nice system, but full to the gills with bloatware. Does anyone have a guide or download links to the various software and driver packages I'd need to reinstall if I do a clean install of windows 7?
