NFS: Shift 2 Unleashed

I hate paying full price for games now days, but I'm a sucker for a good racing game. At least I got $15 towards another game purchase at Amazon. :D

Well I just spent 1hour trying to get 1:1 steering + 900 degree with no success.

It always wants to add dampening to my inputs (i.e. delays like when using a gamepad or keyboard)

handling is better than first Shift, but still sloppy. Annoyed they are going all EXTREEEEEME MOUNTAIN DEWW WOOOO like the Dirt series did. I dont really give a fuck about whoever that formula d champion douchebag is.

Hey leave the ginger out of this...

:p

Yes. Input lag is bad.

It's odd, I only played for about 15 minutes this morning (just finished the two GTR races) but it felt that way to me too, as though there was a delay in the car responding to me. I haven't experienced this in other games, I wonder whether it's something you can tweak?

EDIT: I should mention, I felt this on a 360 pad, not a wheel.

I don't think its "real" input lag.

I'm convinced it's made up input lag. Kind of like a Button press delay.

In the controls XML files they have alot of values which seem to point to that also.

example from g27 xml file

<_cControllerSettings SpeedSensitiveSteering="0.000000" DampeningTimeCentreToLock="0.500000" DampeningTimeLockToCentre="0.300000" DampeningTimeOppositeLockToCentre="0.300000" DigitalRampRateSteering="0.200000" DigitalRampRateThrottle="0.500000" DigitalRampRateBrake="0.500000" DigitalRampRateClutch="0.200000" NominalRiseDamping="0.950000" NominalFallDamping="0.750000" MaxSteerVelocity="3.141593" NominalYawAngle="0.785398" TurnDeadzone="0.000000" ThrottleDeadzone="0.050000" BrakeDeadzone="0.050000" ClutchDeadzone="0.050000" TurnSensitivity="0.500000" ThrottleSensitivity="0.500000" BrakeSensitivity="0.500000" ClutchSensitivity="0.500000" WheelLock="1.000000" WheelLockDegrees="360" AlternateWheelLock="1.000000" AlternateWheelLockDegrees="300" AlternateSpeedSensitiveSteering="0.600000" />

stuff like "DigitalRampRate" lead me to beleive they added those delays.

edit:when trying to fix my wheel I was using G27 for pedals & shifter + T500RS for steering input. I will try G27 only later tonight and see if I can make 1:1 900degree with zero lag.

ooo I'll be interested to hear if that works.

I don't understand how their wheel profiles are supposed to be used.

The ones in my steam folder get reset every time I exit the game (all of the profiles, even ones I never used). Now I get that those there might be the default and should never be modified. But I've searched all my drives for the "customized profiles" i.e. when I change a button assignment it should get saved somewhere on my computer... It's not in the "Users/Documents" folder where the graphic settings are saved...

With G27 only the wheel seems to at least let me use 900 degrees. But there is some sort of steering axis dampening and the force feedback makes absolutely no sense at all. If you loose the rear of the car it doesn't even rotate like it should. It just stays there.

I've tried my three wheels and they are all non-enjoyable to use. Hopefully someone figures this mess out. I'm done putting time into it.

I've made sure too launch the game as administrator in case some control settings were not getting written properly. I've also set the default controls files "read-only" after modifying them with no positive result.

All the settings I've tried lead me to believe that they forgot to program a pinion which would in real life connect the car's steering to the steering arm lol.. (actually it's not funny at all)

yeah, waiting on a patch to address the steering with wheels....because it really bad.....enough to make it a PITA to even play

look in the options menu for the controls. There is an advanced menu with several options to adjust deadzones and sensitivity. These options are functioning properly for gamepads and you should be able to eliminate this feeling by lowering the deadzone for the analog stick. I think the game defaults to 15% or something for the deadzone. This means there is a certain amount of movement in the stick that doesn't translate movement to the game. So by default, the cars don't start turning exactly when you expect and its prone to making you over compensate. There is also a sensitivity setting for the sticks but I haven't felt the need to use it.

I would turn down the sensitivity on the acclerator though to somewhere around 30%. This will give you more throttle control on a gamepad and make you less prone to flooring it and torquing out a powerful car through corners.

experiencing crappy performance out of my SLi setup...then again, I'm having a similar slow down in NFS HP

Only played the intro race, but controls actually feel more Forza/GT5 ish and less like the original Shift (a good thing IMO) - IF it wasn't for this damn input lag. Hopefully someone finds a fix or a patch is released.

Playing w/a 360 controller, BTW.

OK, found this on another forum, it definitely helps with the input lag...

1 - Open your Programs folder and navigate to \Electronic Arts\SHIFT 2 UNLEASHED\ControllerDefaults\PC

2 - Find the XML file that relates to your setup - (ie. I'm using the 360 controller in the Default configuration so my file is vehicleset_pc_xinput_default.xml)

3 - Right click on the file, go to Properties and UNCHECK Read-Only

4 - Open the file in notepad and change DampeningEnabled to 0

5 - Save the file and set it back to Read-Only

After doing this, most of the input lag is gone. You can then use the in-game sensitivity adjustments to fine tune to your liking. Hopefully someone out there finds this helpful.

None of that worked to any effect for me. I also tried editing the xml files as the other guy mentioned, it did nothing, I still have to turn the wheel 45-60 degrees before the driver starts turning his wheel on the screen, and then all my steering is in the last 30 degrees or so......so I have this HUGE deadzone, makes it unplayable

wow really? and you have 2x6970's

I ran 2x6970's w/ my 3x30 and hot pursuit was pretty smooth, and it was jaw droppingly beautiful...I just made that word up

i dont know what his deal is, i have no idea what my FPS are, all i know is it's butter smooth with my rig and it's just a 460GTX. Thats at 1920x1080 with everything jacked up, i think 8xAA and 16xAF? I set it real high cant remember....

didnt help at all, some of them are already set to 0, i changed the rest to be sure, made no difference

I'm at about 10% of my career, so far i would say shift 2 is better then the original. I'm liking how the cars are price more realistically then shift 1 regardless of their performance level. Right now i only own an evo 9 and working on getting an nsx.

I'm about 15% into the careeer mode and I've tried tinkering with the settings to get my Logitech MOMO racing wheel to work well with the game. I've been able to make it better, but stil not how it should be.

Also, is it just me or is the AI too difficult? I'm not the best driver, but I've only won one race so far in career mode on medium AI difficulty. It seems like as soon as the AI passes you, it's almost impossible to catch up to them, I found this true even on the easy AI difficulty. On top of that, the AI's annoyingly aggressive. They keep crashing into me on turns and seem to try and turn me out. AI shouldn't be like that. I expect that online but not in the career mode. It's annoying.

Yeah max settings (in game) on a fresh install of Cat 11.4 FPS is very low @ 2560x1600. Around 25~30 fps. I only tested for the first two races, but i'm thinking its possible a xfire issue or even driver issue.

Not really liking what I'm hearing about the game so far, I might just pick it up from the bargain bin in a few months.

if they would take the controller input directly.....or take the controller config of say GRID and move it over to this game, it would be a blast. That's my only complaint, the wheel control is toasted.

Got it working better with the wheel last night. I do not like how they make you do the difficulty test then throw you right in a race. First off, i beat the 56 seconds by 3 seconds, and they still didnt set it to elite driving with no assists, which i had manually set before starting, along with manual transmission. So after i had to go through the training session, it reset it to Pro with assists and Automatic gearbox. Such a pain in the ass.

Did the first set of D races or w/e. Fine i guess, i dont like the AI and how they decide to spin you out at any given time when making a legit pass. Its a frustrating racer that doesnt seem to respect racing lines or racing space when making moves for position. Ill keep playing, but i suspect the online will be full of wreckers just like the last one.

I finally got to spend a couple hours with this game last night. The helmet cam is awesome, it takes a few races to get used to it, its really disorienting at first but I really like it now.

I'm playing with a 360 controller and I have no complaints about the controls, it feels different than Grid, Dirt 2 or GT5 but not in a bad way, just took me a couple races to adjust. I'm playing on medium difficulty in experienced handling mode right now, I have ABS and traction control on, but all the other assists turned off.
I've won probably 75% of my races so far and I am thinking of turning up the difficulty to hard and see how that is. The AI is aggressive but I think thats a good thing, if you don't nail the corners the AI will pass you and kick your ass, it makes the game more fun for me. I don't want to be leading by a half a lap or more all the time like what happens in Grid or GT5.

Edit- forgot to mention a couple of gripes so far. I wish it had more graphics options, I AF set to 16x, but the AA settings are something like off, low, med, high. WTF is low, med, high? Also having to wait through the little pre-race cutscene at the starting line before every race, I wish there was some way to turn that off.

i think this is the key to the control issue. i think they are treating the wheel input the same as an analog thumbstick in terms of range and deadzone and sensitivity.......because you need less precision and slower response with a thumbstick than a wheel. The wheel should be 1:1 for the most part with any lack of responsiveness only coming from tire grip and pressure

This is just about my experience too.
Glad I got the game. Really like it.

press the button serves as "enter" or whatever.

I've found the game pretty easy so far with the PS3 version. Playing on Hard. I beat the D and C class and am now doing the american muscle. I haven't had to upgrade any of my cars from stock to be able to win. Getting first requires good driving with the "stock" cars, but that's the only place I really have to push for.

People using wheels on PC, have you tried adjusting the steering lock in the "tune" options?

*Dudes, here's some cars (all of my pics were taken on the PS3 version BTW)
here are a few screens from my initial hours. Started with an RX-8 as I have in all racing games since GT3:

just one shot of night racing for now

After I earned some decals and wheels, I went back and added some stuff to my car's livery/paint

(Its very easy to burn out in this game, which was something GT always had trouble with until GT5. Also notice my tire tracks, those stay there and build up during races)

purple Viper (my own custom metallic paint/decals/wheels)

can't remember the model name, but its an Alfa Romeo (custom flip paint/wheels)

narly wreck

Did you feel that the cars in Shift felt a bit like hovercrafts? I never felt the sensation that my cars had wheels. I was hoping for an improvement here.

Yes. LOL, that's a great way to describe it. The new one feels more like after you applied the "sim mod", IMO.

What are you using? Wheel? 360 controller? Logtiech controller?

I'm surprised it didnt work for you. It was like night and day for my 360 controller.

What version of the game are you running?

I'm running the steam version, and anything I do to those XML files never seems to make it in the game.

Logitech Drive FX usb wheel/pedal set. Its made for Xbox 360 but works fine for iracing and grid on windows 7

i was convinced to get this then i saw:

3rd-party DRM: TAGES Solidshield
5 machine activation limit

i'll just play this at my bros house on one of his consoles...

So I bought this from the EA store... I'd love to comment on how it plays, but all I get is a blank screen when I try to start the game.

Forums on Steam and EA didn't help at all. Total waste of my money.

Low - 2x MSAA
Med - 4x MSAA
High - 8x MSAA

Seems pretty easy to understand.

I would kill for access to the games music files... I love every single song they used in the menus D: soooo eerie. But I know the songs still heh

How do I turn automatic shifting off? I set the handling to elite, and it's still auto shifting.
