So... i'm doing some math and i'm thinking if i will go the single card or dual card setup.

What do you guys think it's best

- 2 x Sapphire 6970 in Crossfire with 2 EK Waterblocks
- 1 x Sapphire 6990 with EK Waterblock

The card(s) is going to be overclocked.

The catch is that i can get some really good prices on the 6970s ...
Will the 6970 be faster than the 6990? I'm asking this because... i've seen some contradictory benches, where the 6990 is faster than the 6970CF ... so i'm a little lost here.

Thanks for the help

The only main advantages to the 6990 over the 6970 that i have seen is 5x1p and One slot card.

Most of the time they will trade blows but honestly if you can get good prices on 6970s i would go with 2 of those. Unless you have 5x1p ofcourse then you will want the 6990

You cannot split a eyefinity configuration of monitors across cards?

Not sure if you are going to consider selling them down the road on your next upgrade, but the 6970's will be easier to sell based on the lower asking price

I'm going to the 6970 CF config with water blocks. I had a POV GTX590 for testing during today ( for testing ... as ... i bought it ) ... but after random freezes and shutdowns from nowhere ... just by benching and testing... i decided to box everything again and just return it and get the 6970 CF ... at least, to know " the other side of the story " ... let's see ...

Dual GPU single slot cards are a meager attempt from each company at bragging rights for the fastest single slot card. These days, most people considering dual GPU solutions already have a motherboard capable of it, so theres no reason not to spend less money for a faster configuration. That doesnt even take the higher resale value of two cards as others have mentioned.

Edit: Get 6950s and unlock them to 6970s.

I thought the 6970 was capable of using DP daisy-chain devices that could "split" the signal out to up to 6 monitors each or something like that?

Update: Just did some quick searching and the ability to daisy-chain up to 4 monitors through a single DP port is supported in DP 1.2.....which the 6970 is supposed to have.

Update 2: Did some more quick searching and haven't actually been able to find any of these daisy-chaining devices....which is too bad cause it'd be nice to use...once we have DP capable monitors en mass.

Just one question guys... are there any changes in the 6970 PCB that i should be aware? I'm buying the waterblocks, EK has 2 of them, v1 and v2 ... v2 are for non-reference designs... but since i'm buying the sapphire ( on the image ) and i can't find info about that no where...
