For those that do not know, there is a very large artistic graphics demo scene that has been alive and well in Europe since the early 80's along side the releases of Commodore 64 and Amiga. Each system was a bit ahead of its time especially the Amiga as it could do 4096 colors at once in HAM mode (still images mainly) and this was 1985 !

Some of these groups are still around today and should be working for game companies if they do not already.

This demo has buildings etc all made from god only knows how many particles and kicks my 580 oc'ed to 933 2600k at 4.7 to its knees. Still, despite the low fps the demo looks amazing. Droping to lower res doesnt hurt the visuals too much considering everything is particles. There are a few demos on this link that are up for "Scene Awards" for 2011. Check them all out if you like however Ceasefire is the one I am speaking of and it is a fitting back drop for the Radiohead tune that is used in the demo.

Another uses particles as well made by the same team called Agenda.

Want some pure eye candy ? These particle demos will kick your cards right in the jewels so be warned. Those with the big wallets and SLI ? I would love to see how this one runs for you at 1080p

DOH Forgot link.. Thanks to the guy that posted it...

Ceasefire is the one I am most impressed with..

did you benchmark it on your own or did it do that itself?

For me it just went to black screen afterwards and I had to hit escape to get anything to happen.

Seemed to run pretty smooth, but man did I get sick of the screen/audio glitching effect they used ad nauseum. Would have been much better without all that.

i ran fraps for a little while in the beginning and then again about a minute later. i would have used the second result but once it goes to the end screen it starts pumping out like 3000 fps and throws off the average

Have a fire extinguisher ready. You're gonna need it. Aside for that, congrats on getting the card. If only I had spare cash like that laying around.

End it just before it.

Good idea to keep an eye on the scene. I think that the demo scene has done more for modern gaming that it will ever receive credit for. Seeing 3d structures done with particles like that is something that if refined or used in a game engine as opposed to traditional polys (the tech might not be there yet) could offer up some really nice options to game designers. Those buildings exploding are just too damn cool.

Im glad people are making some stuff that shows off what our cards can really do!

No doubt. Its not the game companies showing us for the most part ! These demos also have the luxury of no AI and collision to calculate so you have more headroom for GFX. Every thing is being consoled it seems with good and bad results. I dont mind a standard being developed for pc gaming but not a sub-standard.

Ahh, I had forgotten to keep up with the demoscene. One of the favorite things to actually make use of the PC when game companies and 3DMark/Unigen get boring.

Scene demos and chipdisks are my bread and butter. Great 3D art and music that you render yourself.

In a way this saddens me. The demoscene community is one of the few places where you can see real art and creativity unleashed to make use of our videocards and hardware. It's one of the few places where you can begin to image the scenes and imagery we are totally capable of experience in games or other meta experiences but you know that no mainstream company will ever take advantage of that and make those things.

I've not run a demoscene in like 10 years. I didn't even know they still had them. Downloading the ceasefire one to see how low my FPS are...

My favorite in the last decade is Lifeforce by Andromeda

It's just beautiful and so dreamlike. It's one of the best compos I've ever seen. Reminds me a lot of all the great abstract CG artwork that was being done in the late 80s to late 90s that you used to see on TV but on $50,000 mainframes but now you can run it on your $50 videocard.

I also liked Instant Zen by Synesthetics for the music but it's rather plain otherwise.
