Windows 7 SP1

The language packs provided by Microsoft are enough to break service packs systematically.
But you're right, these errors reinforce my decision not to use third-party driver or registry cleaning or other performance tweaking tools.

The language packs are an issue unto themselves, I've run into a number at problems with them.

@yoss, could it be files that were present even before you started installing SP1?
They could have weird permissions that prevent them from being deleted.
If they were created by SP1, then I don't see why the same program wouldn't be able to delete them.
I assume you are logging in with an administrator account.

If so, I would move these files to another folder so the winsxs\temp\pendingdeletes folder is clean for SP1 setup and you can still restore them from the other folder if needed.

They could be, I of course didn't check before trying it. I'm doing the install from the Administrator account on a fresh boot with nothing running, including the AV (MSSE). On the reboot it never gets to a login. But I'll check that folder and see what's up with it.

I think that a lot of us here have had issues because most of here probably have used driver cleaners which most other people probably don't play around with maybe...
If that's the reason why people's Win 7 SP1 update is failing, the I guess I can kind of understand it, although I'd still think MS should be able to do a better job about making Win 7 SP1 more compatible w/ the versions of Win 7 installations that currently exist.

People are most vocal when unhappy with things. Most of the people who have been successful have probably just not bothered posting their success.

Also among the failures mentioned I wonder how many have used a tweaking app or have are using tuned settings such as disabled services.
Yes, I was thinking that people will more likely post when unhappy than happy. But even that's not completely true. For example, there are products on Amazon, Newegg, etc. that have 4.5 or 5 star ratings, so people will still post when they're happy.

I haven't used any driver cleaners, language packs, etc. on my HTPC. I've left that relatively stock since reliability is more important than performance for that box. I'll report here if/when I get around to trying to install SP1 regardless of how it turns out.

FWIW 4 out of my 5 Win7 64 machines had issues with the SP1 and I can't remember the last time something like this happened. I personally think maybe it could be Microsoft checking to see if the installation is legit because it seems they care more about stopping illegal versions of Windows by blocking updates rather than a smooth update experience.

This is nice speed from microsoft

AVG says that your bottom link is loaded with bad stuff. It killed about 10 files in that link. Actually it's a link that shows up in the notification email, but not in your post. The [H]ardforum security software must have caught it too. Way to go.

ImageShack.us loaded with... what? Eh? It's one of the oldest (but not the most reliable) image hosting sites out there... sounds to me like AVG is freakin' out with false positives if that's the case. Not discounting something could be wrong but, it's pretty doubtful...

Weird.

After a week of running SP1, I discovered that it seems to have hosed my Nvidia install. I tried to uninstall my Nvidia drivers, but they never actually left. Whenever I tried to re-install any other versions it gave me an "install failed" message immediately.
Eventually I just re-formatted and installed SP1 immediately with solid results.

Installed it on 3 personal systems and pushed it via WSUS to another 6 at work this week. No issues with any of them.

Lost sound on my rig after the update. Creative XFI. Everything says its working..devices, services ect. Any ideas?. Thanks

Just started working...go figure.

So are these the only files I need from this link?
windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe
7601.17514.101119-1850_Update_Sp_Wave1-GRMSP1.1_DVD.iso
Windows_Win7SP1.7601.17514.101119-1850.AMD64CHK.Symbols.msi
Windows_Win7SP1.7601.17514.101119-1850.AMD64FRE.Symbols.msi

And in which order do I open them? Also what steps do I take to do a clean installation b/c i want to format my drives?

Haven't had any issues with SP1 yet. Mind you, I've only done it right after a format. Otherwise, there's no reason. It's just a rollup of updates. If you already have windows up to date, then the SP is non essential. It just speeds up the update process for new installs.

Well, had initial problems with installing Windows 7 Service Pack 1, but it was probably due to me installing IE 9 (RTM) before installing SP1. Did a reimage and SP1 installed perfectly then install IE 9. I'm thankful I made that backup before installing IE 9 (RTM).

i did have install problems for sp1 on 64bit win7.
after 2 installs and 1 clean install I started to have monitor shut offs.
My evga 460gtx was going bad, I ran a memtest 86 to make sure and found a bad stick of ocz ddr3 too. Galde both have warranty on them.
I installed a 8800gt and replaced the 2 gig ddr3 with crucial brand and now i can say sp1 installed fine.
wow! crazy days, video was 5month old and ram was 6months.

specs:
asus am3 mobo
x4 945 amd
2 *1 tb seagate drives
460gtx
8 gig ddr3
corsair 750watt ps

I'm happy to report that my Win 7-64 HP SP1 install went fine on my HTPC. It took about a half hour. I used the Windows Update method, like I typically do to install patches. I noticed that the SP1 date was updated to 3/15/11, so maybe MS worked out the bugs.

In any case, it works and I'm happy about it. "winver" confirms SP1 is installed. I reran Windows Experience Index and the graphics card score dropped from 5.1 to 5.0. Granted, I hadn't run WEI in a while until after the SP, but still, I wonder what happened.

The best part about it is I no longer have that annoying icon in the system tray telling me I have an important patch that needs to be installed.

yea, I didn't really see a big difference with the whole installation of sp1. I'm just happy I don't have that little icon in the tray either.

3 of 4 computers installed without a hitch. The 4th refused to install until running the system update readiness tool, followed by the standalone sp1 file.

win7 Pro 64bit XPSM1330....SP1 installed via WU with no problem, but resource stuck at 40-50% all the time with nothing odd showing in task manager. Weird...tried to watch a few movies and after 20min or so the CPU pegs at 100% and cant keep up. I installed new nvidia driver and new vlc. Finally UN-installed SP1 and all is good again. Not sure if this is typical but interested to know if all of you that installed are having high CPU % when watching media now compared to before.

If the CPU usage doesn't add up in the task manager, the remaining difference is from a large number of hardware interrupts. One of your drivers is probably stuck in a loop.

I tried 4 times and it failed every time. I don't know why it's failing because I never had problems with WU. I've got a lot of stuff on my PC and it'll take a long time to reinstall everything if I have to reinstall Windows. If I installed all the patches released previous to SP1, do I need to get SP1?

SP1 install went right through on my 64-bit installation.
I had to download about 88 MB. After the install was completed, my Windows folder grew almost 2 GB. Mostly the "winsxs" folder.

Now my Windows folder is up to 21 GB on my precious 60 GB Vertex2. And I have such minimal software installed, its crazy. :(

^ your folder grew because windows made a backup of the system before it installed the SP1. try deleting old restore points, temp files, etc. I just got 10 GB back from my hdd

Installed SP1 with zero issues. The actual download wasn't too large because I keep Windows constantly updated, anyways. Not a huge difference with anything - but I have noticed that the fast startup times of the OS from my SSD are even faster now, probably 10 seconds faster. Once the Windows boot screen shows up, I'm at the login screen in literally 5 seconds as to where it took around 15 before the update, and 25 or so before I got the SSD.

Nice little speed bonus!

I tried deleting my restore points, but I only had 1 so I didn't get anything back from that. After looking carefully at my SP1 before and after, my "winsxs" folder grew 2 GB from before and after the install.

Winsxs seems to be a common question, and everything I've ready so far just tells me that I can't do anything about it. My Winsxs is 10GB alone (total Win 7 Pro footprint is 20 GB). If anyone has any ideas on moving or junking that Winsxs, would really appreciate it.

Got SP-1 DVD disk from Microsoft free (Cost about $6.00 shipping) since I don't like downloading it nor burning the larger file copy from M/S site. Took only about 14 minutes to install over the download method

Did you try running Disk Cleanup in Performance Information and Tools?

I was able to reclaim 179MB with Disk Cleanup. There were 0 bytes available to clean under "Service Pack Backup Files."

Both my fresh install of SP1 and my custom install of SP1 over the existing Win 7 on another PC have 6 GB in Winsxs. I don't know where your extra 4 GB is coming from. Here's a snip of mine so you can compare what files are so large:

the uninstall files for the win7 sp1 beta were in a temp folder from what I have read .. anybody have these uninstall files that they could throw up on a host site of some kind so i could grab them and get this beta off of my computer and the official sp1 possibly without reinstalling windows from scratch .. (no restore points to choose from)

Some how on my tower, some of my desktop short cuts disappear after it wakes up from sleep. Very annoying.

Also my laptop been have Event 41 Random shutdown/freezes while my tower does not. Should I reformat it again to do a fresh install on the laptop?

Did you create the shortcuts from links in the games folder?
