First let me get this out of the way. I swore never to buy another Funcom game after AoC but this trailer has me interested at least to keep an eye on it.

Factions explanation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ben86e3CWh0&feature=related

Points of interest:
-3 factions
-No classes, skill based, no levels
-No elves/dwarves
-Dark and gritty setting
-Uses the same engine as AoC
-Lead Developer is Ragnar Tornquist

Negatives:
Funcom did they learn from their piss poor execution?
Earl Ellingson (pls shut him up for the launch):D

Beta is scheduled 2-3 months away. Its hard for me to say anything good about Funcom and I know its hard not to turn this into an AoC bashing thread but let's try to focus on TSW. I know they plan to ramp up marketing this quarter to the end of this year. If they end up releasing a polished product, I would check it out as I'm not one to hold baggage. Your thoughts on the trailer?

I'll definitely check it out. Don't really hold grudges against companies like a lot of the emotional cripple gamers. I judge each game on its own merits.

I like the idea of no classes or levels, but I am skeptical since that's proven hard to balance in many games, and can create a kind of muddy progression.

I've been keeping an eye out for this MMO for the last year since seeing a trailer for it. Haven't seen anything new in the last 9 months or so and sort of figured it was going the JGE route where it wouldn't see the light of day. Glad to see that I was wrong :)

I am glad that they are doing something relatively new with the MMO market. This and the new Star Wars MMO's as well as the new Planetside MMO just might be enough to get me away from EVE after 5 years of constant play

So.
Fucking.
Tired.
of.
Fantasy.
WoW.
Clones.

Ugh, sounds cool but does it have to have that MW2/CODBO sun-in-my-eyes brightness type graphics? That's very annoying.

While trying to respect your request as much as possible to not turn this into AoC bashing, I feel that a company's reputation is very important. Hard to completely avoid it. Anyways, my comments regarding the 3 quoted items above...

1) Many of us have been around since Anarchy Online when Funcom got their start. Many of us said verbatim "I swear never to buy another Funcom game after Anarchy Online". Then fast forward a bunch of years, we gave them another chance and bought AoC. You know how that one went.

2) I'm not sure if I want them to use the same engine. It seems the way things were rendered in the engine (not just the art) it gave everyone a bad case of brown burlap sackitis...or simply...we all looked like we were wearing brown sacks.

3) I would theorize that they didn't learn from their execution of Anarchy Online going into Age of Conan, and that they're also not going to learn from Age of Conan going into Secret World.

Anyways, i'm a frickin sucker so i'll probably at least give it a try anyways.

On to the good... I think it's cool that they're trying to think outside the box in terms of progression, game environments (i.e. real world locations in an mmo), and the class system (or lack thereof). I would love to have an MMO in this vane, but all I can do is just hope they don't screw it up like they have everything else.

AoC just got a massively engine upgrade yesterday. Reports are not only does the game look better but it's running waaayyyy better. Massive FPS boosts.

There is Darkfall which also has no classes. I don't play that game but from what I read that is one of its strong points for the player base.

Yeah all good points. I think with regards to engine however they have optimized it fully since Morrison came along for AoC. I think its the best looking mmo on the market as well. The thing about Funcom is that they have these awesome ideas coupled with progressive thinking. The 3 factions for example has not been done since DAOC. There also isn't a horror based Lovecraft-esque mmo out there.
Their execution is always a miss, but let's hope 3x a charm?
They made a deal with EA as their distributor, not sure what to think of that. They said they have been working on this game since 2006. So let's cross our fingers and hope they don't rush it out the door. We really need more competition for non fantasy mmos.

Started following this game a few years ago really.

The viral marketing scheme was cool back then, I got really sick of getting no actual info for so long. Plus the forums over there are just hopeless, so many fanboys lost in the "ARG" as they call it along with their totally delusional ideas of what this game will entail.

Still though, glad it's starting to garner more attention and hope the info ramps up for whenever they release it.

P.S. It's kind of ironic, the original timer on their website counts down to Dec. 21, 2012, and it was explained that WASN'T the release date, it would be much earlier, but now it might just end up being that long lol.

P.P.S. They have an embargo on GDC info that is supposed to end tomorrow so expect more info then.

I know you said lets avoid bashing AOC but I simply will not buy another Funcom product after the failure with AoC.

Loved AO
AoC was decent

I'll defenetly try this one out. Can't wait to see some gameplay vids though

pardon my ignorance, how would a no class/no level mmo work??

Probably one of my favorite skill systems ever used this method in Asheron's Call. Basically you just put points into individual stats or skills. EVE also uses this method, and Anarchy Online did to an extent but it still had classes. Also loved the use-based implementation in Ultima Online, but i'm not sure how well that'd work now and days because everyone would just macro themselves up to 8th circle spells as they did then.

"Classes" will actually be created by the player itself based on the skills they choose and the title they give it. Which I think will be awesome and lead to a lot of creative builds. An open template to create anything you want.

Think of it like D2 with just Talent points and Stat allocations. No levels or classes and access to every talent tree.

Although no limits or boundaries? I guessing that means no balance either? I can see this game being verrrry broken with everyone playing the same over powered characters.

I predicted dumbed down feeling skills like in city of heroes. That game was perticularly unexciting.

That video got me excited about this game again. I hope Funcom doesn't screw this one up.

Just did a little reading on the game over at wikipedia, and it sounds interesting for sure.

Rofl, watched the first video, combat wasn't all that exciting or fluid.. I really didn't see how targeting worked if there is any. Definitely a story driven mmo, I can see a lot of cutscenes in the future. Lol those poor kittens... I signed up on the site for chance to get into the upcoming beta. Here's hoping.

No targeting, its real time aiming for all combat.
