Cyborg R.A.T. Mouse

I just received mine.. The issues are just like what others have been saying.
The lifting issue is however not as big on mine. I use the rocketfish control side.
And the thumb rest adjustment screw would not really lock it. If you push it hard enough it will go back.
The palm rest is too tight on mine. Every time I try to take it out, I fear of breaking the mouse.

But these are not deal breakers for me. I'll keep using for a few days and see if I would return it.

I can replicate the lifting motion bug(?) however I have to work hard to lift the mouse straight up.

I use the standard left side when web browsing and the pinky rest when gaming. I find the pinky res uncomfortable when not moving the mouse a lot but it doesn't bother me while paying more attention to the game.

So far I'm really liking this mouse. The pinky wing is hideous looking, but my god its comfortable. I just really want to straighten out why my windows pointer speed keeps resetting, because this is keeping me from using the mouse on the highest dpi.

I'm not sure if I have the lifting issue. Every mouse I've had jumps when it's lifted, but I don't lift in a game. With the DPI of mice these days, I haven't needed to lift most of this decade.

I wasn't able to replicate the lifting bug. I basically just did what I always do while playing games.

Well that is good then :D
Maybe I need to get a different mouse pad... Although the lifting issue doesn't bother me at all.

What I don't like however is the fact that the profile software wouldn't recognize the mouse when it's connected through a USB hub.

I went ahead and picked up the Rat 3 instead of the 7. I am much happier with the 3 over the 7 mainly there isnt 7 buttons on this one like the rat 7, only 5, only different is I dont have the weights.

I bought one today, I like the pinkie rest that holds the pinkie up. I just wish it wasn't so square.

I bought a R.A.T. 7 in mid-November and very much enjoyed its aesthetics and comfort. I liked its specs and the ability for me to customize it.

However, a few days after I received the mouse, I began to notice multiple tracking issues. The most annoying issues were that the cursor would move with very slight vibrations of my desk and that, sometimes, up to twice or three times per day, the cursor would lock to one axis.

I used the mouse for a bit longer to see if the issue would go away with software updates or whatnot. In early January, I decided it was time to RMA the mouse.

I began correspondence with Garrett of Mad Catz on January 3, 2011. On January 17th I received RMA forms. After procuring another temporary replacement mouse, I shipped the mouse out on January 28th. I had to pay shipping.

The mouse was received February 3.

According to Garrett, the mouse is still being tested. I have received very little correspondence from Garrett about the status of a return or a replacement. Right now, I am forced to use a Logitech V220, a poor mouse for detailed Photoshop work and gaming.

The point I am trying to make is that buyers of the RAT series of mice should beware. If your mouse dies on you or is malfunctioning, you will probably not get a quick response from MadCatz. I am very disappointed with their RMA department.

TL;DR: I loved the feel of the R.A.T. 7, I had multiple sensor issues, and it's been >2 weeks since I've last seen my R.A.T.. I'm disappointed.

I just got this mouse, RAT 9, and the only issue I have is when I pick it up and set it back down, it takes about 10 seconds for the cursor to be useful again, is this just the way it works or what's the issue here? Past that I'm in love, but yeah that's a deal killer for sure. The cursor doesn't move at all, it just takes a few seconds for it to start moving again.

"Deal killer"? I'd say that's an understatement!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yup. I have a ratpadz, which doesn't work. Anyways, I put some of the orange packaging under it and it works perfectly, I still wonder if this thing is malfunctioning, anyone with similar experiences?

It's a very common issue with the laser sensor used by the RAT mice and a few other models from different brands.

Have you tried getting it exchanged? Have you tried different surfaces and software settings? The one I tested didn't do that.

I haven't tried getting it exchanged yet, I wanted to make sure it wasn't just a know issue. I'll probably try that next. I've also heard that white pads work best with this sensor, any thoughts there?

So far, I've had this ratz 7 since launch and I couldn't be any happier with the investment. I love the rubberized grip feel of the mouse. So far, my only 2 complaints are: the mouse wheel, which is pretty cheap since its plastic. I bumped it and it fell off my desk and hit the carpet and the little piece that's holding the wheel in place broke off. It's the center piece that's sticks out of the wheel and clicks the switch when you press down on the wheel. Madcatz was kind enough to replace the mouse with a little wait, but I didn't mind since they're doing me a favor. And the other problem is the 1 axis locking that occurs. So far, it happened to me 3 times during normal use and not during gaming sessions. I would just lift up the mouse and blow out the sensor thinking there's some gunk stuck in there and it would resume normal operations.

Other than those problems, no lifting problems that everyone's complaining about. Oh, the software to configure macro's for the keys are confusing as shit to configure. I would get it working using the center wheel next to your thumb rest to adjust my volume, but after a restart, the software shows that the settings are still intact, but it stopped working.

I love the mouse as well. I just ordered another and will return this one when that one gets here, it's from amazon, so that's the only way to do it through them I guess.

Anyways, I saw somewhere that these mice/twineye sensor prefers a white surface, so I got a cheap white surface to see, and it works perfectly now. Though the batteries don't seem to charge all the way, hence I'm still returning it.

Anyways it's a great mouse, except I got a bad one, no big deal it happens. I had a Logitech revolution before and this one is much better imho, that mouse just died from being used.

Edit: Also the wheel seems to be metal on mine, though it could be plastic, sure looks and touches like metal though.

hey whats the recommended surface area for the rat 9??

I have an Icemat, and it doesnt work on that, my desk is a dark brown black laminated wood table. barely works on that, right now i have a side cut out of a 12 back corona taped to my desk.

thank you.

A friend of mine has a r.a.t. 7 with a problematic sensor. We tried a bunch of different mouse pads and the only one that worked with no problems was an xtrac pad with the hex design. I think it was an xtrac hammer.

I would pay money if someone could tell me what mouse surface to use with my RAT 9. I have tried the xtrac ripper, xtrac hybrid, my old func 1080 pad, and regular wood laminate desktop. I am getting, with all these surfaces, erratic cursor movement (pushing the mouse moves it farther, despite DPI remaining the same) and sometimes it fails to track Vertical or Horizontal axis , like the mouse X or Y axis is broken. Its driving me crazy.

You'd think I would have just given up and assumed the mouse was the problem, but getting into contact with Cyborg's tech support has so far been impossible. It took them almost four weeks to reply to my first email and I haven't gotten a followup answered.

Is there a mousepad that won't give the RAT9 fits or should I just sell the damn thing?

I had no idea surface was a big issue, Im using the rat 9 right now, It wouldnt work on my icematt or on my desk which is black wood. right now im using a piece of cardboard from the Corona 12 pack case with the dpi on low, working pretty good, a little bit rougeher compared to my icematt but thats ok, i dont play as much first person shooters as i did back in the day.

My R.A.T. 7 had serious issues ofr like 2 weeks, and then magically went away. and for two weeks after I first bought it, it had no issues. Temporary insantiy, perhaps?

This mouse is going to give me permanent insanity if I can't find a way to fix the jittery and erratic movement. Someone on another forum said a Razer Scarab mousepad is magically compatible with the Rat9. Does anyone have one?

Hi,

Taking those surfaces out of the equation for the minute, how does the R9 respond on a simple piece of white paper? Better? Worse? The same?

The fact that it's doing it on a plain wooden desk does suggest it could be a problem with that unit (although it's wood laminate, which can sometimes have a slight gloss to it which can cause issues) but let me know how things go with the paper test.

That's a good idea, I'll try that. But wouldn't it be pretty difficult to slide the mouse over the paper and not move the paper itself?

Thanks for the reply, I'll post my report after I've given it a few hours.

Tape the edges.

The Scarab works because the phillips twin eye likes white surfaces.
So ( white destructor, iron clad, scarab, megasoma, white printing paper, rocketfish dyed white etc. )
Also.. If you have had trouble wit yo rat 9 staying asleep...
most likely yer surface was to dark. ( worked fer me )

The z tracking fix for the RAT 9 was a half moon aperture mask over the lens:
see the half moon over the lens?

If your battery is draining in 3 hours something is wrong. Normal for me is 7 hours even with
heavy use. ( 1 and 1/2 times a day )

Git rid of wobble by: ( unlike Rat 7 rat 9 came out with additional foot for the pinkie platform )
Press the mouse "flat" downward while tightening for your thumb adjustment pressure and
there will be no rocking ( tipping ) during button presses.

The battery is actually easy to take off without messing with the palm grip.
To do as much: ( for right handed )
Holding the mouse with your LEFT hand, turn the mouse upside down with the bottom facing you.
( oriented so you can read the bottom logo "CYBORG Dynamics Ergonomics" from left to right!
In this way you can simply use two fingers ( with your free right hand ) to pull the battery out...
your welcome.

The blog sometimes has goodies like the mouse acceleration utility and the two profile packs.

Sniper button is great for sensitive graphic applications!
In thbe next driver version that precision button can be overloaded with modifiers and macros
( the button will be programmable finally! )

Controlled 5600dpi !
You can crank the resolution all the way up in the cyborg control panel and then adjust cursor speed in the window's "mouse control panel".
( windows>control panel>mouse properties>pointer options> select a pointer speed! )

// cons
The Cyborg drivers do not play well with Digital Raster's ZBRUSH plug-in "Zswitcher".
( which is a shame since the mouse's weight and sniper button offer a nice complimenting alternative to pen and tablet at times)

No battery replacement listed yet ( makes me nervous )

No feet replacement ( like RAZER have ) listed yet.
My feet do have noticeable "wear"!
( nervous again )

I imagine there will be a RAT X that will probably have more buttons.
And my poor wallet is going to suffer. ( hopefully )

I've tested it for a while now. It performs the same. It randomly chooses a few 'dead spots' on the paper where the cursor stops moving. It may take a little less moving of the mouse to get the cursor moving past one of these spots, but it still is happening. What should we do now?

Just got mine in the mail. Small learning curve to get everything adjusted. I'll edit later when I get some game on.

That sounds like there's a problem with that unit unfortunately. Get in touch with support to get that sorted out.
