Windows 7 SP1

Sorry for late response, but no I do not.

Thanks for the feedback.

Just reporting that I installed SP1 yesterday and everything is running perfectly fine. I'm still using D3DOverrider with nVidia's 266.58 drivers and triple buffering is indeed working with DX9 games without any issues.

No issues with the install on the Win 7 systems. At least none so far.

Still failing for me on the 6th attempt. SP1 downloads fine but can't finish installing. Since Windows 7 SP1 is just a collection of patches released previously, I'm just not gonna bother with it. I've never had so many problems with an installation of a windows service pack.

I have twice before. Only did one machine with win7 SP1. It rebooted twice and then was fine. Made me nervous because that isn't usual behavior. Then I found this thread. I'm going to be more cautious with this from now on. Luckily this time things worked out okay for me.

While the new DriverSweeper fix didn't work for me, choosing another "restore" option within the program finally did.

For the people having issues - anyone try doing the whole "upgrade" pseudo re-install with your disk? I was glad not to have to, but has that worked for anyone?

Installed through Windows Update yesterday. It seemed to go fine, except now my computer will not sleep. Every time I try, the computer blue screens and completely shuts down. Upon restart, I get the "Windows did not shut down normally" screen. Very upsetting.

I haven't done it yet because I haven't been prompted to do so. All I see are instructions to reinstall Windows 7.

@slingshot

Have you looked at your errors in %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log?

It isn't the easiest log to read, but can help you iron out what is causing your installation issue. Its how I found the fix for mine.

Also, did you try the System Update Readiness Tool? It creates a log file %windir%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log that can be helpful.

I'd be willing to take a look at your logs if you want.

On mine it told me to do a re-install...but not a complete one. You pop in your disk and choose "upgrade" and I guess it keeps your old files/settings and whatnot but reinstalls all of the default Windows components. At least that's how it worked back in the Vista days. I had to do it once and the only thing it did was force me to reinstall all of the Windows updates again. That's what it sounded like Win7 was asking me to do as well.

Anyway for the DriverSweeper folks - try doing a restore from a previous point yourself instead of those files that are posted on their website. That's what worked for me whereas their files didn't.

And just like Vista, SP1 install fails if you have several language packs installed, as they will consume all the memory available at install time (I had a fun 2 GB SP1 install process) and will run out of it at reboot time with a cryptic error C000009A.

So before installing SP1, make sure you uninstall manually your language packs if you have too many installed.

The language packs cannot be smoothly upgraded to SP1 level, they apparently need to be uninstalled before being reinstalled, and it seems that one or both of these operations is managing RAM in a very bad way. You are probably aware of this already if you use several language packs in Windows Ultimate, as they cannot be selected and installed from Windows Update all in one go without crashing, you need to install them in batches of 5 or so.

Tip: If Windows still first reboots with an error and system restore does not work, you can try DISM from the Windows Recovery Environment's command line:

DISM /Image:<windrive:\> /Cleanup-Image /RevertPendingActions /ScratchDir:<dirname>

Hi,

After spending the last two days trying to figure out why I couldn't install Windows 7 Service pack 1 I stumbled across this informative thread. It helped me solve my installation woes. This is how I did it. Ran Readyness tool like suggested. Looked at the log file, C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\checksur.txt, created by it where I saw that NV_Agp.sys and other nvidia files were missing from the driver store. So I used 7-zip to decompress those files from the Windows7 DVD, and throw them back into the folders were they were suppose to be. Had to mess with ownership and file permissions to do so. Now its all fixed and I'm going to celebrate! Probably happened as a result of running driver clean.net cleaning out old nvidia drivers. This should be a sticky on all the forums to watch out for!

Apparently I was not the only one having a problem with my computer not sleeping after SP1.

The explanation and hotfix download are in KB2495523.

I installed it, and now my computer sleeps properly.

Having trouble with SP1 here. It actually installed fine on my 7 year old Dell laptop (Ultimate x86) and my Intel Dual Core desktop (Ultimate x64). My third computer, a desktop fails (Ultimate x64). The patch loads, reboots, and completes installing to 100%, but then instantly says installation failed and reverts back to pre-SP1. I've tried about five times, three times from disk and two times from Updater. I've run the updater troubleshooter twice. I've run the readiness tool three times, and the logs report no errors. The CBS log for the failed install matches identically to the successful install on my other desktop. At the completion of the restored pre-SP1 the installer says: Installation not successful - Unspecified error - Error:E_FAIL(0x80004005).

All the other updates download and installed fine. I can't find any information on this other than the link provided by the Go Online message in the error message that pointed me to the troubleshooter and the readiness tool. I'll keep watching to see if anyone else finds a solution to this problem. :(

Installed SP1 on my laptop and now have pretty constant 50 to 60% CPU usage. When I click Resource Monitor the first 4 to 6 lines are all the same thing: mscorsvw.exe
This has been going on for over an hour, and I have a decent laptop: T4400 with 4 GB of RAM.
WTF is this all about? This never happened before.

What did you do with the permissions to get them to copy over? I was never able to...

Google it already.
I did, but the results are from 2005 and 2006 and I don't think that really applies here. Also, the results say that the high cpu usage should last for 5 ot 10 minutes.
I noticed the fan running pretty much non-stop over an hour ago.
Note I got SP1 from windows update.

I just completed the Windows 7 SP1 update using DVD drive update media.

Took roughly 25 minutes on one OEM Q8400/2GB-RAM/500GB-SATA from start to finally log on after sp completion.

Is anybody else having the same problem I'm experiencing?

Windows 7 SP1 will install just fine, but after it's done, a slew of applications and service cannot start. Double-clicking one of these problem applications does absolutely nothing; no app window, no error, the cursor just shows the loading circle for a second and then...nothing happens.

If I right click these applications (which work ABSOLUTLY FINE if I uninstall SP1) and run them as administrator, they manage to start under SP1.

WTF is going on there?

Installed for me on the first try. Using Windows Update. Granted, I installed the other two updates that came out shortly after SP1, so who knows, maybe that had something to do with it.

Thanks for your reply! I took a look at the log and it lists some ATI stuff. I used to have a Radeon GPU but I'm using an NVIDIA graphcs card now.

That is disturbing information regarding the possiblity of ATI deleting those files during an uninstall.

If you want the exact directories to copy to I can provide those when I get home later, as I don't have a Windows 7 system available right now.

Who would've thought that W7 has ATI drivers that cannot be uninstalled?

Thanks again for your help!!

So, has anybody downloaded it yet?

installed it on 2 PCs without inicdent. No noticable change in performance

first machine is in my sig 30 mins total

second machine is a core i5 laptop 30 mins total

The good thing after being forced to reinstall Windows 7 and SP1 from scratch is that RAM usage is divided by 2, a stable 840 MB now.

looks like I'll have to reinstall Win7 to get the official SP1 installed .. I have the RC v.721 installed and no option to uninstall it .. :(

darn

I've taken the time to zip and upload the necessary files for those of you that are receiving the 0x800f0826 error when installing Windows 7 SP1 due to missing ATI or NVIDIA driver files in the Windows directory.

Please note that I offer NO SUPPORT for these files and you are using them at your own risk. Also, these files are for the x64 (64-bit) version of Windows 7, as I do not have a x86 (32-bit) version of Windows 7 to copy the files from.

The pathing in the files is exactly where they should be located in the Windows directory, but you cannot copy them there directly as by default you will not have the correct permissions to copy them there. You will need to modify the ownership and permissions for those directories to copy the files but I strongly advise changing them back once you are done.

ATI (x64):

NVIDIA (x64):

Good luck!

I have like four machines with Windows 7 installed. The first one no problem installing sp1. The second failed and readiness tool reported missing nvidia files which i extracted from the win dvd into the appropriate folders and was able to install sp1, third machine had missing ati drivers but must have screwed up permissions or something as it still failed with no errors on readiness tool logs after except cbs log made reference to files not found. Fourth machine more of the same but with no readiness tool log errors at all! So there must be like Sp1 failures happening all over the place?!

Kind of sucks anyhow. MS should have better repair fix it tools for this cause renaming distribution folder, running svc scannow (spelling?), or running troubleshooting windows update tool in control panel, or for that matter an inplace upgrade reinstallation does nothing! Beta beta BS!

microsoft appears to have fixed something. i tried it again this morning and all 3 machines upgraded fine, no more 80200053 :)

or not.... worked fine 3days ago on my laptop errors out on my desktop now

Look for your errors in %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. It is more verbose and can help you find something that doesn't show up in the System Update Readiness Tools log.

I can't really blame Microsoft on this one. From my experience it is third party tools, software, or drivers themselves that are deleting the critical files that the service pack install is looking for.

Windows 7 Pro (specs in sig).
Installed without a hitch through windows update.

For the 0x8... errors, perhaps, but SP installation also systematically fails if you have several language packs installed, and these are provided by Microsoft and Windows Update.

Even for the driver files, these are not critical files at all, or Windows would not run in the first place. SP installation should include them in the error log but be smart and finish the installation successfully, or ask to insert the original Windows disc or retrieve the files from microsoft.com to self-heal or something, and certainly not during SP installation, but long before, when the files were actually deleted. This is not error management, it just makes Windows highly unstable if any little thing like an optimizer tool removing unused files can break it.

After so many tries I decided to reinstall Windows. SP1 installed w/o an issue. Thanks again for all of you who helped!!

I have to agree.

I updated laptop to SP1 last night through WU. It seemed to hang at 17 or 19%. I think it was the 4th time that it worked. Laptop was only used for like 1.5 hours today and no problems. However found this reading with my main PC and had to start it up and am starting to open programs and try things out.
Everything seems fine, but I'm surprised so many people are having problems.

My main PC has WinXP on it and am going to do a clean install of Win7 x64 soon. Of course I've been saying that for the last week. Thankfully I'll be using an integrated SP1 from MSDN so I'll be fine.
I did read somewhere that Win7 SP1 has like 300-500 fixes, obviously not just security fixes, probably just very minor bug fixes, probably a couple bigger ones in there. Ones you'd have to really go searching for. So for some it is a good thing.

But with some people having problems above, let alone the time it has taken you to correct it, they did not do enough testing, that's for sure. I'm glad I got lucky, well I think I did.

I tried using Unlocker to open %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log and that didn't work (no popup showed up). But don't know if that's due to SP1 or not. Just copied and pasted somewhere else and it opened fine.

Oh by the way, Unlocker has a new webpage: http://unlocker.emptyloop.com/
