I know I'm probably a little late to the party on this one...

I just got Red Dead..and am hooked! Granted the game feels like I'm playing the western version of GTA (which is what it pretty much is).....

Anyone else here finding themselves killing whole evenings with this?

It is very addicting. I spent 4 or 5 hours this Saturday. Havent touched it yet. But looking forward to play when I have some free time. Did you get lasso yet?

This is the best game of this generation.

John Marsden is the best protagonist in any game ever. The story, the characters, their development and voice acting is bar none probably some of the most compelling ever implemented into a video game. People reading this who haven't played or do not have no interest in playing are missing out on one of the best games I have ever played. Starts a little slow due to learning the ropes (pun intended) but by the time the credits roll (doesn't end until you see them roll), you'll soon realize you just played a rare gem, and insta classic that will probably be hard to top.

RDR is everything the GTA series should have been but never was. I hated the GTA series, especially IV. In RDR you cannot help but identify, relate and actually care about some of the characters. Its top notch AAA quality done at its finest and anyone who considers themselves a gamer owe it to themselves to play this game ... until the end. Until the credits.

Go buy this game. Thank me later.

I only picked it up a cpl of weeks ago and didn't put it down till the credits rolled, I didn't do all of the side missions, mainly concentrated on the story and a hell of a story it is too....especially the end!! Bought the 3 add on packs when they were on offer the other week on Live so will be going back to it when I've finished GTA4.

TBF I enjoyed RDR more than I'm enjoying GTA4 too, even tho they are essentially the same styles of games RDR seems to give you so much more freedom, I true 'do what you want, when you want' kind of vibe, whereas GTA kinda gets boring unless you follow missions.

I had a ton of fun with it. Probably just as much as San Andreas (my favorite GTA game).
I wasn't much of a fan of the skinning/flower picking quests, but everything else was nearly flawless.
I'd still love a PC version with increased view distances and higher resolutions...but the console versions looked amazing.

I just started it recently as well. the level of thought and detail involved in the game amazes me. My wife, who is not a gamer, said, "it's just like watching a movie".

Loved playing but I just have one gripe: gimmie more! Definitely wouldn't mind having to play the main character for a few more missions.

Lets just hope they put out a prequel too. You know, being an outlaw and all that.

I thoroughly enjoyed the game, and will put John Marston and his tale as the #1 story of the year by far. But IMO the game is extremely overrated. The gameplay, gunplay, story, graphics and production values were amazing. But overall the way the story moves and how the world reacts to you is kind of bland.

Completely agree with this. You have very little ability to change the world around you and as of now (80% through) the story isn't that interesting.

That last 20% is amazing. You're going to sit there thinking "What the f%$&, what's left?" for a part of that last 20%. But then.... You'll just see.

Remember, the story isn't over until you see the credits roll.

Come back when the credits roll mkay? :D

I bought this game new last night because of your post. I'm gonna fire it up for the first time tonight, I love Fallout 3/NV and GTA's, and I'm guessing this game is similar. I'm kind of excited lol.

Totally agree, this is the first game that really held my attention in a long time & super fun.

Yup, think GTA in the old west with villages dotted about. Just watch out for wolf packs in the dead of night when your galloping across rough terrain!

I'm pretty sure a mountain lion...or something similar took me off my horse once when I was about to cross the border.....

BTW - I'm done, finished UD and I'm about to trade/sell it out. Anyone interested? It'll be in the Spam thread.

Awesome! It will start a little slow, but some of the menial tasks you have to do are key to helping you later in the game. One thing I learned too late was fast travel. Instead of having to ride your horse everywhere, anytime you are more than ~100 yards outside of a town you can setup camp (anywhere). Once you have camp, you can hit a button for fast travel and pick a previous town location. This will save you a ton of time and allow you to enjoy the game more.

There are 3 main 'portions' of the game. The first introduces you to some fantastic characters, memorable ones. The second takes the story a little sideways and the characters are a little cliche. By the time the 3rd portion of the game ends you should find yourself engrossed in the story, but more important Marsden himself. The voice acting is top notch, and this is probably the best western game ever made. Where it shines over a GTA game is mainly with character development. In GTA you have almost zero interest vested in some characters, just some other ganster doing ganster stuff. RDR seems to have borrowed characters from other successful movie franchises (like the Wizard of Oz) and carefully crafted them around the main protagonist. Nobody shines like John, the most likely of the unlikely.

I loaned my copy to a co worker but as soon as I get it back I have the Undead Nightmare (6 hour zombie campaign) paid for, downloaded and waiting for me. Enjoy the ride!

Yee haw!

I find myself side tracked now... I'm having fun playing online more as oppose to doing the main game... I rented this from gamefly...but just got done buying it for $20 :)

O man....my to do pile is starting to pile up.....damn addictions....

Define generation.

[H]ardforum > Bits & Bytes > General Gaming > Console Gaming & Accesories.

1. This is the console sub forum
2. This generation started in 2005.
3. Still my favorite game on any platform (including PC) since 2005.

One note on fast travel. You do miss a lot of small side missions doing it and unless you buy the maps you miss out on a lot of areas to find. Plus the practice on riding fast is nice to keep up on...

That being said. I didn't figure out how to fast travel until about half way through. Between that and stage coach's it makes it easy to from one side of the map to the other.

UN can't be played on it's own if you snag it via XBL? The stand alone copy you can. Found that out when my thumbdrive went missing with my saved game on it.

I believe you are correct, the DD Version of UN requires the full copy of RDR. However the retail optical media copy is 100% stand alone.

Ok.... I find myself now side tracked in the game. Instead of doing the main missions, I'm now having more fun online!

Ever find yourself looking forward to get outta work just to go home and fire up the game?!? I think I may need to go to a meeting soon.....

i think it was over rated as well. then again, i didn't like gtaiv

too much "case these guys, get chased by those guys". also, marsden was such a "bad ass" yet he continually got played by multiple NPCs. he had no problem killing dozens of nameless people but he was fine w/ being other people's bitch.

i got as far as being the marshal's bitch (iirc) and then my save game file got corrupt so i returned the game to gamefly.

I am one of the only few who didn't enjoy this game as much as the rest of the planet, maybe because i just finished playing JC2 (which i loved), i was probably all sandboxed out.

It was a pretty solid game tho.
