Portal 2 pre-order starts now!

In my opinion $50,, even $40 is too much for this game.

You just know this game will be $10 after a year.. and then free another year after that.
Just like the first portal. (yes valve was giving portal away for free not to long ago)
And it will probably be bundled for free with every cheap new video card.

I can wait.

Where have you played through the game, if I may ask? I wonder how you came to the conclusion that it's not worth $40.

I played Portal at my home on my computer.

Based on the eventual quick devaluation, as stipulated in my post.

without context your opinion is worth pretty much what it cost.
portal 2 is not another set of puzzles, it is actually full featured SP game

Meh who cares about Portal, game was WAY overrated. I'll take EP3 please.
Considering Valve's effort to tie into the HL universe with the first Portal, I would be surprised if Portal 2 didn't in some way set things up for a convergence of the two series in Ep 3.

I guess my post was not very clear.

The reason i don't think this game is worth $40, is due to the eventual rapid devaluation.

I base this on the price history of Portal1, and as is the trend with most other Valve games.

Thus someone like me who has a large back log of games to play on my steam account (generally obtained during holiday sales), can wait for the inevitable price drop.

Also since i buy a lot of computer hardware, it is also quite probable that i will eventually get a free copy of this game, which will likely be bundled with many different video cards.

I do understand that this is a full game and not DLC.
However i do not remember Portal 1 costing $50 on release day.

If i had to guess the reason the PC version was priced this high, it would be probably in order to avoid cannibalizing console sales which by default are always $50+ per game.

Portal 1, was PC only on release day, and eventually released on xbox, then PS3.
Portal 2 is being released on PC and all consoles at the same time,
Which would explain why Portal 1 was probably cheaper on its release day, than Portal 2.

Probably more pandering to publishers and retailers by Valve.

I don't see the point at all in pre-ordering a digital version of a game unless it comes with some kind of bonus content/beta access or a discount. It's not like they can "run out" of digital copies in the same way the physical copies can.

You don't shop much on steam do you? Just the other day they had metro 2033 as a preorded bonus. The entire game. It's not rare either. There is almost always an incentive to preorder.

I think Portal 2 will devalue, but at the rate of TF2 or L4D2, not at the rate of Portal 1. P1 was just a fun addon they threw in with the Orange Box, it NEVER was priced more than $15-20, so giving it for free or $5 is not much devaluation.

P2 is a $50 game, and will be $5-10 eventually, but I would guess that won't happen until Christmas of 2012. I might wait until the summer sale, but of all the game developers out there, Valve has (a) earned my respect as a business, and (b) never put a turd on my doorstep, so I'm seriously considering coughing up the 50 bones.

No. What explains the price difference is that Portal 1 was a part of a larger package and at best took 4-5 hours to beat. This game is (or should be) significantly longer, with an additional coop campaign also included.

While I doubt Portal 2 will offer as good a value as the Orange Box did, you're delving pretty deep into conspiracy theory territory to explain something that is actually pretty simple. Portal 2 has more content than Portal did, thus they are charging more.

The "price history" of portal was that it was essentially free on release with orange box. And I think orange box was a $40 package. For rapid devaluation, all computer games drop in value fairly fast, exception being CoD series it seems. Opposite end, KL2, $5 within a half year. Based on the stuff valve has put out I feel confident that the game will be worth the price at whatever pricepoint it is purchased.

Basing Portal 2 devaluation off of Portal 1 is laughable. Portal 1 was pretty much just a side-game that was added to the Orange Box to give it more value for your buck.

Portal 2 is supposed to be bigger, I have no doubt that it'll cost less by Christmas, but that's just how Valve does it. By how much? I don't know.

yeah 50$ for portal? pass.
Will wait for 19.99 or less deal that will happen mere months after release. NOt like Portal is that great of a game.

Same here, it's £29.99 on steam which is way too much IMO.

It's competing against full priced games like Fallout New Vegas which provided me with about 50-60 hours of single player game time, or multiplayer games like BC2 which have provided 100's of hours of online fun.

Just ordered the two-pack on Steam for my girlfriend and I. She's away in law school so we play Left 4 Dead on her free time to keep the long distance not feel so far. She loved Portal 1 so I just HAD to get this for her for Valentines Day. Best boyfriend ever? I think so.

Why are you even here?

The reason i visited this thread was to determine the pre-order pricing and offers available to those willing to pre-purchase Portal 2.

Upon learning that this game will cost $45 to $50, i decided to comment that i would wait until the premium price drops before i decide to purchase this game.

Obviously that is how i see things, and just like everything, some people are willing to pay higher then others for the same product/service.

From the looks of it, it seems that although i am not willing to pay $40+ for this game, others people are, which is good for Valve.

The fact that i am not willing to pay full price on release day does in no way indicate that i think that this game is no good, or will not be a high quality product.

Having read some replies, I now think valve should charge $100+ for the game on the first week, in order to maximize their profits, since I am sure there would be people willing to pay just about anything to get their hands on this game. :)

More like best marketing ever :)

Just pre-ordered a 2 pack for me and a friend. Valve is about the only developer i'm willing to pay full price for a game for before reviews hit. At $40 I have no problem supporting them and getting to play at launch.

I'm going to wait for a few years to pick this up for $3.

Nah I am going to pay full price ahead of time to play on launch. =)

Surprisingly, Portal is still fun for me, and I have had it since it came out.

It's a game, not a car.

Meh, I can see his point. I paid full price for Left 4 Dead 2 at launch and didn't get around to playing it until it was half price anyway. I, like many others will wait for the sale.

$50 ? Yeah right...Guess this will be just like the first game was for me. Had to wait until it reached the bargain bin to pick it up.

What's even funnier is that you criticize him for taking conclusions without knowing everything, yet you do the same...How doe that work for you ?

You have no idea how long Portal 2 is and how it compares to Portal 1. You even use "(should be) significantly longer", which indicates you don't know, yet you justify that it's acceptable the more than double the price of Portal 1, for Portal 2, based on what ? The coop compaign ?

Straw man...

Heh, straw man argument? I think not. Some people value co-op; just because you do not does not make it invalid.

Thanks for proving my point!

The guy I quoted was criticizing another person for not seeing value in Portal 2 @ its asking price. He proceeded to say that if it has more content, then it will cost more.

Well maybe, just maybe, the person that he was criticizing first, just doesn't see value in the new content, which is why he thinks $50 is too much ?

You obviously didn't come to the rescue when that happened! :)

Double standards! How I hate the!

Will probably buy a 4 pack and split the cost with people i know. It's always the best way imho.

Read my post again. I was not criticizing the other poster for not seeing the value in Portal 2. I was challenging the notion that it costs more because of it being released on consoles (which the first Portal was as well on launch).

Whether or not it has enough content to please you is irrelevant. Valve thinks it has enough content to justify the price tag, whereas for the original they did not and thus packaged it in the Orange Box. It has nothing to do with being released on consoles. If that were the case, it would cost $60, not $45.

And yes, generally products that have more content cost more. I really don't understand the surprise that some people have over this.
