Who here is checking it out? I know I am and old accounts have been re activated until 2/21. It is a great time to feel nostalgic. The server is currently at max capacity, wow this may very well be a big hit. For those that do not know Fippy is a progression server so it is basically the original EQ level 50 max and it will open up as people unlock it. Post edited and thanks :)

For anyone looking to try it, it is actually spelled F I P P Y Darkpaw. No L.

That actually sounds pretty cool. I remember day 1 of release outside the Qeynos gates killing skeletons praying one would have a rusty two handed sword.

I got my reactivation email as well, was quite surprised to see "Your EverQuest account has been activated" in my email and my first thought was that someone somehow got into my account.

I posted elsewhere that EQ was the best time I had in MMOs but that I wouldn't want to play it now even if they would pay me to do it. That still holds true.

Just like the other progression servers it will start off strong then dwindle to nothing until its pretty much one guild progressing everything.

Every time an EQ1 discussion starts, I get so excited and overwhelmed by nostalgia. I want to play, but I know it'll never be the same as 1999-2001. :(

Yep. You are better off with the memories instead of loading it up and being disappointed. I had terrific memories of it because I had only played MUD's prior to that. I had really never played anything like it. Seeing someone yell "TRAIN" in Black Burrow the first time and wondering what was happening. Then, seeing 50+ gnolls, some I'd not seen before, come in a big long line of death from somewhere down below...I don't think you can re-experience that.

Loved EQ1, and I love the idea, but i'm afraid it's too little too late. This ship has sailed. Would still be interested to hear some of the experiences (or re-experiences) for those of you who try this out though.

There will never be anything like EQ again. It was a huge combination of first MMO for many, lack of anything else in the industry, and mechanics that threw most MUD / UO players for a loop. The devs had one rule, our way or the highway, and there was no catering to players whining like there is today.

I still remember running all the way from Freeport to Qeynos, getting stomped by hill giants, assaulted by gnolls in HHP, dying to Broon in EK, etc. Paying bards to ferry you across, or SoW's.. Those were the days.

And yes, trains were (and still are IMO) one of the best parts of the MMO genre. The first time people ever encountered one was quite the experience.
xxx shouts, 'DVINN TO ZONE!!!'
you, "what's a dvinn?'
*10 seconds later*
an_orc_centurion hits YOU for 27 points of damage!
an_orc_taskmaster hits YOU for 38 points of damage!
Royal_Guard hits YOU for 47 points of damage!
Emperor_Crush hits YOU for 70 points of damage!
Emperor_Crush bashes YOU for 11 points of damage!
Ambassador_DVinn hits YOU for 58 points of damage!
Ambassador_DVinn hits YOU for 43 points of damage!
Ambassador_DVinn bashes YOU for 19 points of damage!
You have been slain by Ambassador_DVinn!

As cool as this is of them to do , my memories just can't be re-lived. I played EQ1 for 5 years , loved nearly every moment of it , but that was nearly 7 years ago .. my taste in games has changed quite a bit.

People have been running emulation servers for ages where you could play with the original rules and what not. But Everquest 1 was also punishing hard and there were some big balancing issues with that state of the game at that time , this concept should shed those issues as its unlocked but its still annoying to deal with them all over again.

I've been playing P1999 because of this want of "nostalgia" and then switched to EZServer because it's fun to get uber quick.

I may try out Fippy darkpaw though.

What is the progression ruleset?

haha, I remember that. I liked EQ a lot even though I'm not a big fan of PvE. It had a good amount of punishment if you didn't do things right, which was nice and made you feel like you were accomplishing something. Although I had more fun in 2 hrs of UO than I ever did in EQ(sadly it was after trammel and was on some private server).

What is the progression ruleset?

What will be the name of the Time Locked Progression Server?
•The Time Locked Progression Server will be named Fippy Darkpaw, as chosen by the community.

When will the Time Locked Progression Server open?
•Currently we are targeting Tuesday February 15, 2011 for the opening of Fippy Darkpaw.

What rule set will the Time Locked Progression Server use?
•The Time The Time Locked Progression Server will use the normal PvE rule set.

What sort of items and content will and will not be available at launch on Fippy?
•For the Fippy Darkpaw Server we have done our absolute best to remove items which would give an inappropriate or undue advantage such as Defiant Armor or certain tradeskill related items. Generally the items that you will find should be items that came with the expansion currently available or were unlocked during that expansion. Augments created specifically for progression servers will be available.

Will there be Hotzones or Hotzone drops??
•Hotzones and Hotzone items will not be available on Fippy at release

How about Marketplace items, will Mounts be available?
•In addition to restrictions on items initially available within the game, Marketplace, Loyalty, and Claim items have been similarly addressed. If an item or buff offers stats, it will probably not be offered from any of those methods until a later date. Mounts will not be available until Legacy of Ykesha is unlocked or later, depending on the mount.

How will tradeskills work on Fippy Darkpaw?
•We have made efforts to limit tradeskills to the expansion when the recipe actually came out. Potion making and jewelry making have had the old recipes enabled, and these will stay this way until the Prophecy of Ro expansion is unlocked. Similarly the new poisons will not be activated until around Underfoot. The exception is spell research where we will not reverse it to the older method. Instead, we have limited recipes for the appropriate expansion and made ingredients for research available in more zones..

How will progression work on Fippy Darkpaw?
•As with the previous progression servers, players will need to defeat certain challenges to unlock newer expansions. Once these challenges have been defeated there will be a grace period where the server will stay in the current expansion. After the grace period, players will be able to vote through an in game poll to unlock the next expansion. The voting period will be one week.

Initially the grace period will be 90 days before voting will start for Kunark, then 60 days for each expansion after that. At some point we will even have a vote to see if players wish to change that grace period.

If the majority of players vote to unlock the next expansion, the next expansion will unlock at the end of the poll. If the majority of players voted to stay with the current expansion, then there will be a one week grace period before another poll will be posted. This will happen until a majority players vote to unlock the next expansion.
Will there be limits on who can vote?
•Voting for progression will be limited to those on Fippy Darkpaw and above a certain level. The exact cut off level is yet to be determined; however we are currently thinking somewhere around 30.

Will maps work on Fippy Darkpaw? How about other windows that have been added since launch like the expanded target window?
•Yes, the map window will be functional on Fippy. Most other windows will be tied to the expansion they released with.

What will experience gain be like on Fippy?
•Experience gain will be substantially scaled back on Fippy Darkpaw. Hell levels will not be added back in and the current experience curve will be in place, however the experience earning rate will be reduced.

What will the revamped zones look like on Fippy Darkpaw? When will zones that weren't tied to a specific expansion be added?
•Zones which have had their graphics updated will stay with the new look and feel. If a zone was added between expansions, efforts have been made to assign them to the expansion they launched after. Most zones which have had level changes (such as the Temple of Cazic Thule) will be reverted to their old level ranges.

Will the manastone or other items that have been removed from the game be available on Fippy?
•Some items which no longer drop in the current game will be available starting in the second month on Fippy Darkpaw. These items will be available for a limited time. Good luck in your hunting!

Will there be server-wide messaging upon the defeat of progression related targets?
•Yes, we plan to have server-wide messaging when a progression target is defeated for the first time.

Will the tutorial be available for players on Fippy Darkpaw?
•No, the tutorial will not be available.

What races and classes will be available at launch?
•All races and classes initially available at the launch of EverQuest will be available at the launch of Fippy Darkpaw. Class choices which have been added to these races (such as Halfling Rangers) will be available. Classes (such as Beastlord and Berserker) and Races (such as Vah Shir, Iksar, and Drakkin) not available with the launch of EverQuest will not be available until the expansion in which they were added is enabled.

Can we use marketplace items to change our race on Fippy Darkpaw?
•Yes these items will be available, however please note that the Race and City will need to be available in the current expansion that Fippy is experiencing or the change will result in an error message

Will out of combat mana regen be enabled? Will your items stay on your corpse when you die?
•Enhanced out of combat mana regeneration rates will be disabled on Fippy Darkpaw. At launch items will not stay on your corpses when you die, however we will be putting this up for a vote in the near future.

Will the /melody command be available on Fippy Darkpaw?
•Yes, /melody will indeed be available.

Will Monk fists use the original fist damage table or the new enhanced version?
•Monks fists will use the new damage tables for unarmed damage.

How about ShadowKnight Harm Touch? Will it do damage using original values or those currently on the live servers?
•Harm Touch will be identical to the current live servers.

Wow no hell levels? Thats pretty nice.

If it wasn't for the original massive exp loss and what not .. I might actually wanna play again.

I remember getting the server's first Cloak of Flames for my ranger.

So much social life wasted in college... but I wouldn't have it any other way.

I played until early 2003 and have my share of "fond" memories (sitting and staring at a spellbook throughout a fight seems laughable now, but it was a skill in the early years).

I jumped on the FIPPY server, partly to relive a few memories and partly to view EQ in context of current day MMOs. I enjoyed the 20 minutes or so I spent running around a few of the cities and newbie zones, but there's no way I could go back.

I'm going to go give it a try, but...

I'm glad MMOs have progressed. EQ at the time had so much painful "work". It basically created the "poopsocking neckbeard" stereotype for MMO players because of XP Loss/Debt, hell levels, and all the various time sinks that basically turned the game into a second job. Still, I loved the world design which was amazing for the time and even today MMOs simply don't seem to have the scale and complexity of the original 3 continents of EQ.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm downloading now for the free trial.

EQ original is greatly under apprciate din the gaming media world.

its insulting that PC gamers Magazine top 100 games of all time does not included EQ but it has minecraft? ridiculous

EQ was fun because you had no clue the monstrosity that is Luclin and beyond was on its way. This is like playing a game you know is doomed from the start.

broken engine
broken content
broken management

lulz...fuck a whole bunch of EQ2

crappy game that has never and will never work right.

So does that mean Lower Guk and Nagafen's lair is open? I wouldn't be surprised if I were to log in and I would see the same farmer's camping for the haste sash. Going to try druid for old times sake and kite giants with snare in NRO to see if anyone complains.

Gonna hop on and check it out. Was just about to cancel my station access but this may keep me a bit longer.

The one thing i miss from EQ is beastlords. In all the games i have played i have not found a class i liked as much. Pet, Slow, dots and melee is a very unique combination.

It actually isn't really broken.

The engine actually really is broken...

i5 2500k at 4.3 GHZ with a GTX 560 ti and i get 13 FPS in some parts of crescent reach... No reason i can see and if i turn around and look at something else in these spots back up to 150+ FPS. The engine has been a mess since they first upgraded it it got even worse when they upgraded it to 9.0c.

Anyone having problems logging on?

My downloaded seemed to have installed properly. When I click "Play Now" however, it goes to a server selection screen where I don't see any servers listed. When I click chat, there are many rooms to pick from, but no one in any of them except for myself.

What might I be doing wrong? I don't see anything about servers being down on the forums.

This is a joke. It is just current EQ with expansion locks. They didn't even implement corpse runs although I hear they are in the process of doing so via a vote.

I wouldn't bother playing unless you like current EQ.

Project 1999>Fippy Darkpaw.

Its definitely not just current EQ. The level curve is more like original EQ than new thats for sure. 10 kills in and im 15% to level 2.

Its been a while but didnt actual corpse runs start at level 10?

Oh man I want to play so bad, I wouldn't know what to play though. I always had problems trying to figure my main.

Maybe I'll set up a 2box.. ha.

Sounds like you have shadows on. Crescent Reach with shadows is definitely broken, but I never had trouble elsewhere, shadows off never gave me any fps dips, even in the vendor heavy areas. Now, the original Bazaar was another matter.

They did end up fixing their DX9.0c probelms. For the size of the game with all 17 expansions and changes they have made, I'm surpised at how well the game works. I ran into exponentially more bugs with Fallout 3, with a fraction of the game content that EQ has.

Rift (currently in open beta) has a Beastmaster class in the Warrior path that is actually very similar. Melee, DOTs, debuffs, and pets! Not to mention the various abilities from other souls equipped

Seriously? I played the beta and got bored quickly that may change things.

Why the hell is it called Fippy Darkpaw?

I think it was named by vote.

Fippy Darkpaw is one of the most memorable characters of the original game. He was a low level gnoll who would yell and ineffectually charge the Qeynos gates and get killed every so often.

I too have many fond memories of EQ but mostly because of the friends I made within the game. Give me those groups (and guilds) back and we'll see if I play again. ;)

I don't think I could ever play a real MMO again because of time restraints but also because it would be impossible to match some of my EQ experiences. Running through Karanas, Old Seb, Hollowing Stones, first time kills in Velious, even the fun my group had in LDON. My college roommates and I started in Qeynos and Fippy is probably our first real memory of an encounter in EQ.

Actually my first memory of EQ is my friend bought it and was showing the rest of us. I remember him explaining how he had to run naked to get his body and me saying "well how dumb is that?" Yeah, little did I know how big of a part of the game that would be.
