Portal 2 pre-order starts now!

Strange. You can only preorder a boxed copy. Steam preorders aren't available yet.

Probably more pandering to publishers and retailers by Valve.

I don't see the point at all in pre-ordering a digital version of a game unless it comes with some kind of bonus content/beta access or a discount. It's not like they can "run out" of digital copies in the same way the physical copies can.

Tempted to get the PS3 version and make a PSN to claim my Steam copy.

Valve games come with at least a 10% pre-order discount on Steam. They also include some freebies and cross game promotional items which might not be available at retail stores (this seemingly matters a lot to TF2 players :p). And they can do stuff like 4-pack pre-orders for the price of 3 (plus the 10% off), something that you don't see at retail.

Valve is so amazing.. Good prices.. Good Games.. Activision take note..

Pre-order Portal 2 on steam and receive these exclusive TF2 hats! A portal cube on your head! etc, etc.

I dont see why you need to pre-order a digital copy... Pre-ordering a hard copy usually guaranties that you will get a copy of the game from the store. No need to do that with a digital copy.

they run out of keys all the time for big sales. :)
and even without a bonus you can often preload
although if valve does 4-packs i'll be looking for a group :)

Fair enough.

Pre-ordering also usually means pre-loading which is great if you want to play the minute it's unlocked instead of stuck downloading the game when it's super bogged down.

The PS3 version makes more sense but I want the game the moment it unlocks :p. I don't think I can wait the few days it will take for the game to ship out to me :D

I'm really looking forward to this. What a GREAT game :D I hope there will be cake...

I want to mod a little mini-ITX case to look like a companion cube. Though, I'm sure it's been done before.

for some reason i read it as

Postal 2 coming out.

I was at first, I thought that game was already out than looked at the trailer. I was thinking are they making fun of portal?

Than realized at the end it was portal 2 pre order

The Steam pre-order is up. 10% discount + a free copy of Portal which can be gifted if you already own it. There is also speculation that there will be a special TF2 badge you can unlock if you buy Portal 2, although it's not clear whether it's for Steam customers, Steam pre-orders only or anyone who buys the game.

wtf 50 bucks? Do not get me wrong portal was a good game but it is not worth the full retail price........

It would be really nice if Valve let us pick the included game if we already own Portal. I'd love to get my hands on a copy of TF2.

+1 way overprice wasn't the first one 19.99 or free with the Orange box (I forgot). But yeah I think ill wait untill it hits 19.00 or less no way this game is worth 50

This isn't a short game like Portal 1. It has a full fledged campaign + a separate co-op campaign as well. And if you've watched any of the videos, you'll know that they are adding a lot of new gameplay elements to the Portal universe.

It might still not be worth the 50 bucks to you, but you're doing the game a disservice by judging it's price against the length/value of the first game.

I'm really looking forward to it, but I was hoping it was going to be cheaper than it is.

Also, I like Dextar's idea of choosing a different game if you don't want/already own Portal 1. Everyone I know that wants Portal 1 already has it. ;)

I'll be picking it up, regardless.

Yeah, it came in the Orange Box at first. After it became popular, they started offering it for 20 bucks on it's own (15 bucks now)... but that wasn't part of the original plan. Portal was really just meant to be a fun little extra for the people who bought the Orange Box. More of an exercise in physics in the guise of a puzzle game than anything else (created by a team of only 10 people). For this reason, it was never intended to be a fully fledged stand alone game. However, like Spindoctor said, Portal 2 is supposed to be a completely different animal from the original. It was meant from the get go to be a stand alone. A fully developed AAA game rather than something meant to be sold as part of a pack. Thus, the $50 price tag. It's a much fuller experience than Portal 1 (according to Valve), which at it's heart, was just a series of puzzles with a very basic story arc layered on top that took about 3 hours TOPS to complete. Oblivion, it was not. But it was fun, inventive and decently original (Narbacular Drop not withstanding)... add that to the low cost of entry, and you have a winner. Portal 2, though more expensive, should be much longer, more in depth and hopefully more fulfilling. We'll see though. I have high hopes.

They do? I dont see how they could run out of keys for big sales. If they run out, they can generate a few thousand more in a matter of seconds. I would also think if they anticipated a lot of people buying a game they would already be prepared with a lot of keys.

Steam doesn't generate keys. They get them from the publishers.

As for anticipating demand, they do that all the time. That's why you don't hear of them running out of keys as a regular occurrence. However, once in a while they have some amazing deal that sells way more than they expected, which is when they run out of keys.

Luckily, in this case they are the publisher.

True, but keys can't just be instantly generated... no fuss no muss, even though the same company does both. They need to conform to a set standard (or that standard needs to be adjusted) and also need to be added to the registration lists, stock lists, accounting records and god knows what else. They are treated just like a physical product. They need to be accounted for and kept track of. Digital Download keys run out all the time during sales, regardless of the company. EA ran out of keys for their own games during a big EA store digital download sale a few months back too, so it's pretty common. It's not like it takes a super long time to generate new keys and get them listed and recorded in all the places they need to be... but it's definitely not instant (The usual wait time after keys dry up is a day or two in my experience).

But that's not the biggest reason to pre-order a digital download. It's because you can usually get it at a discount, and in some cases you receive extra content (normally in the form of a Limited Edition of the game). Such is the case here, with Portal 2 being 10% off on Steam with a free copy of Portal 1.

yeah, but you get some different skins with other versions. yeah, true, skins don't matter, but still it is somewhat annoying. I'd have expected the "best" version to be available from steam.

I will wait for the enviable Steam holiday sales to pick this up. £27 is a lot even at 10% discount.

Big fan of the game and looking forward to playing it but not straight away.

Does anyone know if co-op mode will essentially be a different campaign or if it will be like single player but with added elements to make it necessary to play with 2 people?

Steam is now selling 2-packs with a 20% discount, makes price $40 per person. Suppose people could group to pick it up closer to the date.
