Test Drive Unlimited 2

Loving it so far! Even the crappy dialogue, voice actors and story. It's all about the driving and they've really improved i feel.

Yeah it's awesome even with the paris hilton clones and the awkward acting. You all need to try it out. BTW, put the steering damping slider all the way to the left.

So does this have a plot all the way through? I watched a vid of the opening part of the game and it looks hilarious.

Can I have a private game on a LAN if my friends and I buy this?

One of the main reasons we never touched Burnout Paradise is lack of LAN.

Not so much a plot, but half of one, in which you will most definitely ignore and do your own thing lol. Yep, the opening part, just like the first game, is utter cheese, brilliant!
Gonna sit on this tonight and ignore the girlfriend i think, only had an hour on it last night as i was forced to do Wii Fit and some DIY.... *sigh*

Hey, wtf, the Steam download is 15 gigabytes, whereas the D2D version is 6 - huh?

Both are correct.

Steam is telling you how much disk space is required, while D2D is telling you the size of the compressed archive of installation files.

Played it for a couple of hours the past two nights and for me, at least, it's a letdown compared to the original. The handling of the cars I've driven so far is atrocious-- they either don't turn in soon enough or oversteer off the road. I'm using an Xbox 360 controller and as someone else mentioned, vehicle buttons can be assigned to it, but you have to use the mouse+kb for the menu interface. I want to like this game so I'm going to try it again tonight.

using 360 controller here and dont ever have to touch my Mouse/Kb for menus.

*edit holy crap it made my edit a new reply.

Totally disappointed, I liked the original too. We shouldn't accept cheezy cut scenes, horrible mechanics and bland roads.

I've played a couple of hours, just doesn't do it for me. Will try a bit more to see if I can find the fun factor. It just feels clunky.

For the keyboard my friend has been saying that you can't configure controls....why is that?

I think they tried to include a storyline and a reason to race, when the truth is that the players just want to race! It also might make the game semi-linear, whereas the original was anything but linear. Then again, some people may have been confused by the non-structured way of the original.

You can re-map keys, but indeed the controls are less configurable than in the original. I find it really annoying that I can't invert the mouse control.

I'm using my xbox 360 controller too. They only thing I found out that doesnt work is the trigger left and right button to zoom in and out on the map. Luckly I can use the mouse wheel for that. Its a little inconvenience but I can work with that.

Oh and what single play challange can earn me money quick, I need a house other then that trailer park slump home I'm living at. Can't get no date lol

I just did the C4's and C7 and A4 or whatever challenges, bought a 300k house. I was going to buy a 300k ferrari till it told me i didnt have enough parking spaces, so i had to buy a house instead :(

You could have gotten a house for around 100k. Managing things and knowing what options you have is part of the game. Would be lame if everybody had an enzo after a couple of hours of gameplay. Doesn't take much longer already oO

This title was clearly designed with the 360 controller in mind. After about 3 hours of playing I can even stay right inside my lane at top speed. Each of the cars feels different, and they have weight to them. And unlike the fast cars of the original game, the ones in this title are very drivable. The handling model, with a 360 controller, is actually pretty damned good, and it's what will keep me coming back.

well yeah, but it woulda been a sideways move, and i wanted 4 slots over 2 :D .

Yeah if it has 4 slots then it was a fair purchase. Wabe: Indeed the xbox controller is excellent for games like this. It was excellent for TDU1 as well though. Damn this is gonna be my new addiction

Out of curiosity, how are the graphics in TDU2? Also how is the sound in the PC version? Does it come with surround sound or is it yet another game that only uses stereo? I'm also curious how realistic the cars sound. I can't stand racing games where the cars sound absolutely synthesized and generic.

I am debating whether I should pick this game up or not. If I do decide to pick this game up, I also will need to then decide whether I want to pick up the PC or X360 version.

You should check out the Atari forums for the game. A lot of unhappy customers. Not sure if I'm gonna buy this now...

I wouldn't recommend picking it up, especially not at full price. It's really only playable with a 360 controller, the performance is sluggish, and the game feels clunky. Driving model is p much a total joke, feels very arcade-y-don't expect anything in the way of realistic physics. The cars don't sound very realistic so far-very synthesized and generic indeed.

Wow, I can't believe that Atari has FUBARed this so bad that while TDU1 is my favorite game the past few years, having played hundreds of hours on it... TDU2 is a pass!

Wow, I knew when I participated in the beta a few months back and my first impression was "I got a bad feeling about this...", that at least once in my life my guy was right...

I just totally disagree with that post above - the handling is great. The cars have weight, and after your third or fourth hour you really feel in control. Burnout Paradise, on the other hand, is an arcade title. The cars in that game just don't feel of anything.

I couldn't be happier with this - it's already becoming a time sink for me.

I am disappointed to hear this, because i've been looking foward to it for such a long time. I guess now i'll just wait and see since I still have Forza 3 and Halo Reach for the X360 that are currently in progress. Forza 3 has been one helluva game as i'm still trying to gold medal every single race to get that blasted achievement. I also do not like generic synthesized sounds as it takes away from the experience. I don't know how many of you guys are car nuts like me, but how a car sounds is just as important as everything else to your driving experience.

How are the graphics? Since this is a console port, I would assume I can max every visual option out..........

I sure dont know what your talkin about. It feels fine for me. I think you skiped the driving school part of the game lol. Everything as far as sound. I agree

I am not able to run at very high, or even high settings on my laptop (see sig)-seems very unoptimized to me. I currently have it set to 1280x720 medium settings no AA, and it runs smoothly (45-50fps), but I should be able to play this game at max settings with my hardware.

The graphics are decent, interiors are accurate and the car models look good. Textures are crisp and the water looks good too. However the game environment seems a bit bland and repetitive.

If you're a Forza 3 nut, this game does not even come close to replicating that driving experience. Not even close.

I drive cars competitively and I'm a bit of a driving sim enthusiast, so my standards may be higher than yours. To me the driving model feels totally unrealistic, especially in low grip situations. Also the higher end cars can be ridiculously difficult to control, they are very tail happy.

Apparently that "Butch" guy that's been mentioned is now saying that Atari is already working on a patch, that they had to release the game, no more delays:

Maybe this will be like TDU1 - I picked it up after the sixth patch had been released.

If that is the case, it sounds like I should definately wait then. I had no idea the original TDU required so many patches, but I did have the X360 version of it. One of my pet peeves is when devs release unoptimized crap because they got rushed into doing it.

From looking at the specs of your laptop, it sounds like that is why you are unable to max everything out. The Radion 5830 wasn't exactly a very good performing video card even in desktop version, and mobile versions of GPU's tend to be extremely scaled down. My dual 5850's in CFX in the gaming rig shouldn't have any problems hopefully.

I'm actually not looking to replicate a Forza 3 experience, as i'm more looking for an open world where I can just drive around in. As a result, i'm very interested in graphics although it being a console port has already sealed that part of the deal.

well there's your problem. This isnt Forza 3.:p

If you're not looking for uber realistic handling then this game should be right up your alley, because I will admit that the open ended nature of the game is very fun. I just bought a range rover and I have been having a blast tooling around 4x4ing all over the island-who needs roads?

Atari stopped at six patches so they could focus on TDU2. TDU1 still has bugs, and some show-stopping ones, too.

My favorite is the game save corrupting bug. Atari's fix? Save the game save twice, so now you're only half as likely to run into it.

But only half as likely is the imperative fact. If you ran into a corrupt save twice a week, you now were only likely to run into it once a week...

You could avoid it by constantly keeping backups of your save, but you still lost your progress. PITA to do a 60-min race, and have it corrupt both saves, no? :D

There doesn't seem to be a clear consensus on this game does there? Some people seem to like it, others are having problems or just don't. For a person like me who is sitting on the fence, it's becoming hard to make a decision either way :p

Maybe I should just wait for a sale on it.

No, there's a clear consensus:

Those with experience in TDU1 and other even better racing games are saying to pass on TDU2.

Those without experience in TDU1, and only having experience in some other unfortunate racing games, are praising TDU2.

Seems clear to me? if you have experience in the genre, you are passing on TDU2. If you don't have experience in the genre, you might enjoy TDU2.

But if you're serious about racing games, you aren't even in this thread anyway. So, if anything looks skewed towards the positive, that's why.

I now have hopes that a series of patches could eventually change this consensus though. And, just like TDU1, it could be down to just $7 by that time, too!

TDU1 eventually was an awesome game though. I'm not giving up on TDU2!

One of my favorite bug is out of the blue, I end up in the middle of the ocean. WTH!!!

I would think, one who played the original TDU1 would some what enjoy this. I admit, I played the TDU1 on the xbox360 and playing TDU2 on PC with the 360 controller. In TDU1, I only got as far as 56% complete and 26 of the 46 achievements.

Anyway, I cant wait to get to Hawaii, Hopfully they still have the "strip" :p

For the record, I played Test Drive Unlimited 1, and in my opinion the handling of the cars in Test Drive Unlimited 2 is vastly superior - especially for the fast cars, which handle really well at top speed... they don't feel floaty at all.

I've also played almost every racing game imaginable, and spent at least a hundred hours playing Grand Prix Legends - at least a hundred hours... and it was probably more. Am I saying that Test Driver Unlimited 2 is like Grand Prix Legends... of course not, but the handling is pretty damned good with the 360 controller. Again, people need to focus on the speedometer - you just can't take corners at 100 miles per hour in this game. Many of the cars can reach top speed in fewer than 10 seconds. With stock cars, like this, you just can't be tearing around corners as though you're in command of an F1 car. Again, this isn't Burnout Paradise.

Ah well, at least I'm happy with this. It's actually surpassed my expectations.

Who watches the speedometer in these games? I don't.

GPL - since this doesn't have a speedometer, I'm not sure how you fared. But yeah, from my experience with it, only 100 hours? It probably takes 100 hours just to finally drive in that game and be very comfortable with it.

Unfortunately to be quite honest even being good at GPL, since it's an actual realistic sim, probably does more harm than good in racing on arcade racers. You realize how ridiculous the physics are.

I gave up on GPL when it became too difficult to just have fun with it. 'Though spending a weekend on some ol' GP tracks doing hotlaps is enough reason alone to own it, assuming you really want to leave something about racing from back then.

Please don't tell me you used an Xbox/360 controller on GPL? The racing gods would cry! Man, my G25 was bought for that game, and now sits in the corner on its full cockpit, collecting dust. I don't think it's been touched in over two years.

I'm almost ashamed of myself for that, too. And I own most real racing sims. And iRacing is only $12/3 months right now for new accounts.

My God. I bought my G25 in 2007. It's actually been over three years since I touched it.

I shall go stand in the corner now, contemplating just what have I become?

Actually, even David Kaemmer would tell you that Grand Prix Legends was best driven using... are you ready for it... the keyboard. If you wanted to post fast times, and not fly off the track every ten seconds, your best bet really was the keyboard.

Also, no, I didn't use the Xbox controller with GPL since when GPL was released there was no such thing as an Xbox.

Hey, how much do you want for it? I regret selling my G25. I want another one so I can go back to Live for Speed. Also with rfactor2 and the next GTR (as well as a few other titles) on the way this year, I need to be prepared :D
