This is a long post, but worth the read if your a phone geek.

With all the hype about the new Verizon iPhone4, I am a phone whore, like to upgrade to a new phone every 12 months or so. I have been with Android since the Nexus-One, and loved it, then bought the EVO 4G last Summer, and fell in love even more, but got bored with it.

Anyways I am open minded to the iPhone, my first smartphone was the iPhone3G. And my Brother has an iPhone4 on ATT for me to play with. After having some sit down time with the iPhone4 compared to my EVO, here are my comments; sure the iPhone has a wicked screen resolution, very sharp and crisp and good colors, and the UI is super fluid and smooth, the overall phone feels very snappy and fast.

But to be honest that is about it. #1 the screen is way too small for me, looking at a webpage on both phones, the EVO had a good amount of the page up, where the iPhone needed to be scrolled left and right to read it, feels like a wristwatch size screen now. And the size of the iPhone, everyone says how it is so much smaller and easier to carry in pocket than the "brick" the EVO is. Bull shit, thickness wise, they both seemed almost the same, we both have cases on our phones, and they felt very close in thickness. And weight, the iPhone is not light like a Samsung Galaxy-S, it is heavy, and felt pretty close in weight to the EVO. It is just the width and height the EVO is larger, but by no means night and day different like the Apple complain about.

And now that I rooted my EVO recently, and installed "Myn's" ROM with a lot of transparent menus and apps, my EVO looks so unique and cool, and with this ROM, the phone is very smooth as flowing water, super fast, with even better battery life. But I also bought a 1750mhz Japanese made battery, not much larger, but seems to hold the charge longer, and it charges up much faster than the stock battery. So I can get by the whole day now, never could before.

Overall I feel the EVO 4G once rooted with a good ROM become a mini laptop or small computer in my hand. And the iPhone4 feels like a Fischer Price toy, not to be rude, it just feels and looks so cute and small, with the little bubble apps, and all. I can now see why I see so many women with the iPhone more than ever. I see tons of Moms and older chicks with the iPhone. And the tech geeks that like to mess around and have a different and unique phone have moved on the higher end Android devices.

But this is just my opinion, I am sure many disagree. I am happy there is an iPhone around, will make Google stay on their toes, and keep coming up with fresh and good ideas for Android. And I hope the iPhone5 is kick butt, they need to just do 3 things to make that phone really bad ass. #1 A larger 4" screen. #2 Add Widgets to iOS. #3 Add Notification system to iOS.

If Apple makes those changes to the next iPhone, I would seriously think about going back. But as it is now, just too tiny and a cute toy, not for me I stay with my custom EVO. And if there is an EVO2 this Summer, with dual core, better battery, and better screen technology, and running the latest Android OS, and new Sense UI, that will be hard to pass up.

Good review and I agree, the Iphone 4 looks and feels cheap with all that glass. Get ready for the local fanboys to come and defend the Iphones honor.

I also think a lot of iPhone users that have tried Android did so on crappy phones like MyTouch3G, or low end Droids, and that is a rough experience, and will make you run back to iPhone. Now lest see them try an EVO or Nexus that is rooted with good ROM's I bet they may like it then. There are so many Android devices out, probably a hundred, but only a few of them are actually the high end ones that can compete with the iPhone. Nexus-S, EVO 4G, HTC G2, Nexus-One, DroidX, those are the best in my opinion, and of course the upcoming HTC Thunderbolt.

Oh well, my main beef is the tiny screen, 3.5" is just way too small. And the iPhone for sure needs to be jailbreaked to be fun and unique. But that screen is a deal breaker for me, like a wristwatch.

If there was an iPhone with a 4" or larger screen, and could be jailbreaked out of the box, that would be very tempting to me.

I came from an iPhone 3GS, went to the Samsung Captivate rooted/ put a custom ROM on, and I've never looked back since then. I have a friend that was saying that his iPhone 4 was better than mine, bragged about the battery life and how smooth it was etc...then it died last week while mine is still chugging along lol:D

The thing you have to understand is alot of people dont want to have to learn to root or put a new ROM on the phone. They look at and care for whats out of box. Kinda like a car

I also think that the people complaining about the UI and lack of widgets on iPhone haven't looked at the JB apps.

I agree, and that's cool. But reminds me when I bought a new Corvette when the economy was good several years ago. I bought a stock Vette, but right away, upgraded, with fenders and wheels to match the Z06, and better exhaust, and engine work, and tinted the windows, lowered the car. Compared to the car I first bought, and after the mods, it looked like the Batmobile, and totally unique and bad ass.

Some guys are just happy with the stock Vette off the dealers lot, and that's great, and others like me want a special car. Same with my phone to a degree.

Here is a pic of my home screen, nothing too different than stock, I like to keep it clean and simple.

A large portion of your argument is based around what you could do with your Evo once rooted, like custom ROMS and skins and menus et all. Jailbreak an iPhone and you can do the same.

The only real big thing you mentioned is phone size, which is opinion. If you like a bigger phone then yes the Evo would win for you.

I've been saying it since day 1 of android (still using the same android phone @ 1.6 but its def hackable/capable of the crap above @ 2.2)

Android has the same apps, usually cheaper and/or free.. I've even had an 'app battle' and the google app on android was free while the similar iphone app cost him $3 and 5 minutes of searching. No bs.

Not to mention my android bill is roughly 25% the cost of his.... that all adds up. Apple people always spend more because you pay for the hype! Literally!

Welcome to android.... I agree and I've also used the iphone 4. They are both very good devices though, I would take either and not look back.... if they were free :D

That is my beef, sure the EVO can feel a bit big, but if the iPhone4 just stretched the screen out to the edges, like HTC does on their phones, they could fit a 4" screen in the same form factor, that would be bad ass.

I am not knocking the iPhone4, good quality hardware, just needs some changes to lure this Android guy back.

Android FTW for sure.
I have converted several iPhone only friends to android with my Galaxy S.
I have too. I had an iPhone for many years and made the jump to Android with the Vibrant toward the end of last year. Android is superior in every way IMO. After seeing how easy a smartphone should be to use I won't ever go back to an iPhone.

Thank you for your opinion. It's clear, from reading the forums here, that many share your opinion. However, not all share it, myself included.

To me, size matters. But when it comes to cell phones, it is quite opposite from other matters: the smaller the better (in my opinion). I test drove the Evo (used for a day) and the thing felt massive in my pockets. I don't want to carry around a mini laptop in my pocket. Laptops should be larger (back to size matters!), smaller than 15" is (in my opinion) too small.

I loved the Motorola Startac because of it's size. Even with the larger battery, the thing was tiny. And I miss my Startac due to today's mindset that bigger = better in the world of cell phones.

I have also used (for roughly three weeks) an HTC Droid Incredible. I'm not certain I understand so many people's claim that Android can do so much more than iOS. One of the reasons I didn't like the DInc was because it didn't sync my media the way I wanted it to.

The amount of apps available to iOS users compared to Android/Windows/BlackBerry users is monstrous. I'm not talking just fart apps. What about games? I'm glad that the DInc had Angry Birds. That was fun (for 15 minutes). But what about all the others that are out for iOS? I don't want to have to wait for two or three years until Android app developers catch up. And I don't want to have to read all the users reviews to determine if the app I want is compatible with my ROM. Getting apps and having them force close frequently is as annoying as the old Windows stop errors (blue screens).

Again, this is strictly my opinion. I understand it's not the same as yours.

The Vibrant, Captivate, and Fascinate are virtually the same size as the iPhone and much lighter yet pack a 4" screen. That extra half inch makes a big difference, especially when the screen matches HD aspect rations and doesn't need big black bars making he picture even smaller.

Android has the option of syncing with various software just like the iPhone does. Both manufacturer and third party apps offer that.

I haven't found a single app that I had on my iPhone that I couldn't get on Android. That argument is a thing of the past. As far as games are concerned, the amount of games to hit Android lately are staggering and that's quickly becoming a moot point. I spend a lot of time gaming on my phone and I can't finish the old ones fast enough to keep up with the pace I'm adding new ones.

I do have.to respond.to this one. Besides the huge.industry changing options of Netflix Hulu and BB anywhere there.are.the million of banks, local businesses, and open source projects like videolan still not on Android.

Mind my asking what's up with the excessive periods?

I did a search on both VLC and videolan. 10 apps referring to VLC, 2 for videolan. The official SDK according to this thread appears to have dropped 2 years ago.

What banks and businesses are you referring to?

Just to add a another thing, some video streaming sites *cough*mediamp4dotnet*cough* work flawlessly on my iPhone4 while my friends Epic doesn't, idk whats up, probably a browser issue?

Just did it on my Epic. The stock video player, I BELIEVE, does not support mp4 playback. But there ARE ones that do. The one I have is VPlayer.

Just started part one of Death Race on my phone if anyone wants to verify on their own Android phone.

Sidenote: My browser is Dolphin HD, so I don't know if that plays a role either. I hated the stock browser from the start, so one of the first things I did when getting my Epic was changing that.

VideoLan isn't on Android because there isn't a need for it. Devices like the Galaxy S play every video and audio format under the sun natively so there is no need for VLC...even so VLC is in the marketplace. The only reason VLC even exists on iOS is because the OS's video and audio capabilities are pathetic.

As far as banks go all of the major banks are supported and of the five I do business with all of them have apps.

Android plays flash so there isn't a need for a Hulu app but if you're dead set on one check out Hulu Plus (Hulu's Android app). Android doesn't officially have Netflix yet but some of the phones at CES have Netflix installed on them and word is an app for everyone else is right around the corner.

As you can see, Android isn't short of apps and if you want to continue listing things you think Android doesn't have I'll start listing things that have been blacklisted from Apple's app store that are all over Marketplace.

Works fine on my Vibrant in all three browsers I have installed.

mp4 playback is supported along with dang near every other format on the planet. I have yet to load something on my phone that doesn't play. Even 720p mkv's and flac plays natively.

With the stock video player, or one from the market? Because I can't get mkv's to play with the stock video player either.

No, actually it is short on apps. You said I can work around hulu by hacking my browser tab, netflix is non existant and likely to be a huge victim of fragementation, and Bloomberg et all still offer nothing for the financial industry.

You say "as you can see, Android isnt short of apps" yet, as ive said, it is.

The EVO is a good phone. I tried it twice and rooted one of them. I would've kept the phone if it weren't for the terrible service "where I live". I have the iPhone 4 right now and although it's not the best smartphone out there, the service is decent than sprint. Once the mAtrix comes out on AT&T, I'll upgrade asap. My son can have my iPhone 4 :)

Hmn, I've been actively using an ATT iphone 4 and a few soon to be Droid phones..

I prefer the size, that it actually feels like a solid device and not a plastic toy *cough*Atrix 4G*cough*, it is just way more polished than any Android phone that I have used.

Although I would never actually use iPhone 4 as a personal phone, it's just too glassy... and glass shatters =.=

You done up and overclocked your battery to 1.75 Ghz? thats insane man

Your observations are typical from what I've heard about people I've met that have an iPhone. I met someone who told me his iPhone 4 "was a nice toy, but don't expect to use it for business. It's not much of a phone either." Some one also plainly told me "it sucks." I do have friends that like it, but I can tell that if you want to do more business-oriented things, you're going to want a blackberrry or android

I never said anything about hacking your browser tab, Android supports flash so hulu loads just as it does on a desktop browser. I also mentioned that Hulu does have an app. While I'm on the topic of apps that you say don't exist but do Bloomberg has an app on the market a well. The fact that you resorted to a baseless claim about fragmentation in response to Netflix showing up at CES shows that you're grasping at straws here.

Since we're on the topic of "appless Android" I thought I'd mention that this was typed with Swype and give the Android users reading this a chuckle.

Bloomberg has a news app, not a business app for BB anywhere. Hulu does NOT have a app on the marketplace, you have no idea what your talking about, and netflix itself has said its app will only come to select devices due to Androids lack of unified DRM. That is what fragmentation IS.

You honestly arent even arguing anymore. Your just an irate Android fanboy who doesnt know what the hell hes talking about, rabid at the mouth about how terrible iOS is while you clearly dont know anything about either mobile os.

Edit: The above was not written with Swype on a iOS device, but if i wanted to i ofcourse easily could using shapewriter, something else he is apparently ignorant about

And you're not just a complete Apple fanboy? Neither iOS or Android is perfect. There are flaws with both platforms.

I much prefer Android to iOS and I've found Android to do everything I need it to perfectly. iOS still doesn't have full multitasking IIRC, it has it's half assed implementation still.

That is the stock android keyboard and me not being used to it yet. I always hit period instead of space for some reason. Ill get used to it.

Out of curiousity what does Bloomberg for BB/iPhone do that Android doesn't? Their website makes it appear as if they are identical across all platforms.

Not sure how Hulu not having an "app" is an issue when you don't need an app to play it on Android. Maybe I'm missing something here.

The Netflix thing is puzzling and I wish they would give more information. Simply saying "fragmentation is stopping us" doesn't make sense when 90% of devices are running Android 2.1 or later with Android 2.2 having more then 50% of the market. So based on their tiny bit of information if they simply made the app require Android 2.1 or later you would get 90% of Android's current user base. So what's the reason for the hold up in detail?

http://www.androidcentral.com/android-21-and-now-90-percent-all-android-devices

The fragmentation "issue" is nothing but bullshit. Nobody supports their hardware forever and support gets dropped.

I have a a 3GS now, and my wife has a 4. I'll be going to an Android device when I can because I really hate the soft keyboard. Give me slide-out, or give me... well, or give me a soft keyboard, but I'd really prefer a slide-out!

The BB app for android doesn't have BB anywhere, meaning you cant login into the system. This means communication between corporations isnt possible.

My understanding of the netflix issue is that it needs DRM protection built into 2.2, meaning you need 2.2 OR manufacturer specific hooks into their firmware. Im not sure about that though, need to wait and see.

As for hulu, you can only watch it if you spoof your device ID. Not a huge deal ill admit, but certainly something the average person wouldnt want to do. Dolphin HD also works (it can spoof automatically.).

Where did you hear about the DRM protection being for 2.2 only? Even Netflix's own blog post about the state of Netflix on Android makes no mention of that. I would also still dare say that is a small issue. More then 50% of Android phones are on 2.2 or later and many more waiting in the wings to get upgraded (I'm looking at YOU Samsung).

Hitting 60-70% of current Android users and that number increases with each new phone released seems like a far better idea than not getting any at all. There's nothing wrong with not supporting older phones.

If a user gets pissed well they need to get pissed at their phone manufacturer and vote with their wallet next time as it isn't all Google's fault. For example look at the Motorola Cliq. They said Android 2.1/2.2 would be released for the Cliq. Now they say oops never gonna happen so Cliq owners are stuck on Android 1.6 forever.
