A X3 720 @ 3.6ghz with the 4th core unlocked? I can get a X6 1090T for next to nothing, or should I wait to see what Bulldozer has to offer?

yah- wait. I would guess that the X4 @ 3.6 would be almost as good, maybe 10-15% slower than the 1090T. Can u you use the same Mobo, ram? If not, it's not worth it. If you can keep your old hardware, give it a shot- as a last CPU upgrade before Bulldozer.

I basically did the same thing with my Q6600 and replaced it with a QX9650 @ 3.6ghz. I'll skip the
i series since the new (old) i7 chips are only 20% better than what I have, not worth blowing a mobo, ram, etc, etc.

That's just my opinion.

Yeah, the mobo is compatible with the 1090T, so is the ram. I'm helping someone build a rig and they offered to buy me the 1090T for helping them out. :D

By all means let him buy you a processor.Free is dirt cheap.:D

I would say go for it. That way you can put the 1090t in a AM3+ board when it comes out and put the x3 back in your current board. Moar folding power! Give you time to save up for BD cpu too.

Well if you were going to pay for it I'd wait til bulldozer, but it's free so it's a moot issue.

Will I even see a big difference in games or should I ask them to get me something else like maybe an SSD?

If I had a quad core @ 3.6ghz and had to choose between a 1090t or an SSD I'd get the SSD. I own a black edition quad and I own the 1055t. Both OC well but in the end I can't truly justify the 1055t's price due to lack of heavily threaded apps. The SSD helped out with loading games faster and it reduced stuttering in some games. The overall perkiness of the system was way better. I'd go with an SSD.

And I can upgrade the cpu and mobo later down the line when Bulldozer has been out for a bit.

I think that is what I will do.

surprised no one asked this:

What do you do with your PC?

If you game on games that use more cores, if you do video encoding and what not yes......especially since you should be able to move the 1090T to the AM3+ boards, so you wont have to update the CPU when you update your mobo

Pretty much gaming, shooters, RPGs and racers are mainly what I play, once in a while an RTS. I don't do any video encoding or anything of that nature.

which games in particular

i know it will bring flamers but: BC2 is a game that utlizes as many cores as you give it, and games are starting to become more multi threaded

my suggestion is to get the 1090T since you can then easily upgrade to AM3+ for less upfront cost, get just mobo then upgrade the CPU later.

Hah BC2 is the only shooter that I don't play much of, I'm more of a COD player. :p

Blops and Dragon Age are the 2 games I'm playing right now, but I have a massive backlog of games waiting to be played(damn you Steam sales).

I was all set on getting the SSD, but now I'm thinking of getting the 1090T.

1090T won't really get you much performance, a unlocked 720 should do just fine, don't think it worth the time and cost if you are mostly gaming, just wait for Bulldozer or Ivy bridge.

If the choice is CPU for free or nothing, go CPU. If the choice is between a decent SSD and the CPU, go SSD. Bad time to be getting an AMD CPU anyways, the SSD you would likely want to keep, but if BD rocks, you won't want that CPU any more.

free isnt worth the cost?

i went from a WD Black 1TB to a Corsair Force SSD, and i honestly didnt see a huge difference, but going from 4 cores to 6 i did atleast in usage i have.

+1.

your on crack.. Going from a 1055t to a x2 555 wasnt a big change, but from mechanical to ssd was huge..

Ive bought a couple am3 chips

And I cant tell the difference between the 3, 4, and 6 cores in anything I would actually ever do...

well maybe for you, might not want to throw around shit like saying people are on crack

my inital upgrade was from a 550 to a 1090T, SAME EXACT SYSTEM, in BC2 in particular i had a 10-15 FPS frame rate increase, in Video encoding/backup of dvd's i had a nice time saver, so maybe your on crack.

swapping for a WD Black 1TB to a Corsair Force SSD, was very small change, slightly faster load times for BC2, as well as for windows boot, other than that no real big change, but i expected that going into it.

@Quitesufficient, nice "couple" of CPU's ;)

If its next to NOTHING shit grab the x6 core but if your going to pay alot for it then NO, its not worth it. If its FREE & you had to ask this question you should be slapped. Honestly what I would do is this keep your current Chip with the 4th core unlocked & sell the x6 core. Its not going to be any big difference really & you can make some cash in the process

See if they would get you a second 6850 ;) If they aren't willing to do that, I would go for the 1090T. I'm very satisfied with mine :) I had mine OCed to 3.9 on air, and I'm now water at 4.2 stable working on getting to 4.3...

Ha good idea, but then I would have to upgrade mobos because the one I have only does 16x/4x in Crossfire. :(

In the end I decided I will ask for the 1090T and just buy an SSD later when the new gen of SSDs are released.

Corsair C400, anyone?:p

if your under 1920x1200 the 4x doesnt matter. you wont see the difference & you can run crossfire 8x 4x.

Isn't 16x4x like a 2% performance hit from 16x16x?

Another vote for SSD, why waste money on a new CPU if yours is so close in spec and with bulldozer around the corner? If you want one just get one, I don't think there's any new tech coming with the "new gen" of SSD. C400 probably won't be much better than the C300, maybe some faster write speeds. Then you can put your money toward an AM3+ mobo.

There is no difference from 8x 8x to 8x 4x under 1920x1200 Res but over that you want 8x 8x atleast

Small update:
I bought myself an SSD so I will probably ask for the CPU now. The person is going to order everything in about 2ish weeks so I still have time to change my mind.
