Even though the TSA has spent months reassuring the public that there is nothing wrong with the old airport scanners, the agency is rolling a new line of scanners today. Apparently these new scanners can see pipe bombs but not YOUR pipe and bombs. :D

The new software "enhances privacy by eliminating passenger-specific images and instead auto-detects potential threat items and indicates their location on a generic outline of a person," the TSA said.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I've heard -

- The body scanners being implemented would not have caught or prevented any of the previous terrorist incidents.

- Israel (considered to be more under threat yet more secure) does not employ body scanners and feel they are ineffective

- The company that makes the body scanners have financial ties to those in the government pushing for there use

Are these new scanners just possibly another "cash grab" while preying on people's fears?

that's just it. society of fear and it's been this way for a while now.

and they still don't address the possible health hazards of constant screening for frequent flyers...that might be tinfoil hat area and i'm not read up on it...

Add to that, the TSA has been caught red handed lying about images being saved taken by their body scanners. Anyone who believes what the TSA propaganda machine tells them is a complete !@#$ moron and deserves to catch a deadly dose of radiation on their next flight.

Aww man...now I've got to find another source for my TSA pr0n collection. :(

We don;t need more new expensive scanners. Just dogs. They use dogs in Israel and ahve the most secure airports.

You made my day Steve, that was one of your better lines.:D

Well, for the most part, we don't need a TSA. Let each airline company handle security their own way, IMO

Yeah, wonderful idea that would turn into: What a good secure check? $50 for first class check, the once over cheap economy check, $25, no guarantee about bomb materials, but hey, you're paying economy, we don't give a shit about you anyway.

As much as I have a disdain for government, I sure as shit don't want the airlines doing security. No no 1000 times no. There's too many ways for them to cut corners to save money that could burn a huge hole in your face.

Not that image scanners are necessary, I think its a stupid idea, but you watch, it'll catch a guy with some material (probably a plant) and then all the praise about "WE CAUGHT ONE THANKS TO THE SCANNERS, SEE, THEY SAVE LIVES"

Shell game, (straps on tinfoil chastity belt) you aren't fucking me with this one pal!

It is too bad all the funny things you can do to mess with the tsa will just result in some personal anal body attention.

L3 is the major supplier of the scanners. I know, I was their competition in helping to develop millimeter wave scanners. They went after the government money, dumped nearly a half a billion in development, which is something that we could never compete with and secured orders on their prototypes which we thought we had secured. Money talks and so do larger companies. That's the way it is.

No not just cash, cash grab and freedom/rights grab. The government mistook 1984 for a how-to manual.

Yes. They are purchasing new machines with modifications made in specific response to passenger privacy concerns. Clearly the agenda here is to violate our rights.

I know that some day, if not already, a man will say these words to a TSA agent:
"It's fore-skin, sir".

Are you high? The airline that misses pretty much ANYTHING becomes there airline who's stock bottoms out the next morning as everyone runs to their competitor. There simply is no better motivation to do ANYTHING well in this world than pure and simple greed.

The American people--sadly--will never be OK with highly trained soldiers with M-4s in the airports. Israel's had military in thier airports for years, when's the last time they got hit, either on the ground or in the air?. It's one layer, sure (all their folks are good at picking folks out of a crowd), but taken as a whole, Israel is not to be fucked with.

Overall, it's a level of competency and professionalism that the US will never achieve, in part because it's so damn hard to hire good people and too fucking tough to get rid of the no-loads. And I say that after having a pretty darn good flying experience over Christmas, as far as dealing with the TSA was concerned. I've dealt with incompetent TSA guys in the past, quite a few of em actually.

Fun project for the next time you travel!

Using a marker with metallic paint, write something creative on your body, such as, "stop staring at my Man boobs with your perverted scanner" or, "This space for rent"

For a real laugh, write "SUCK IT, TSA!" watch while all the TSA officers smile, right before they perform a body cavity search on you... repeatadly, with a broom handle.

Usually the person running the scanner is ALWAYS reallyyyyyyyyyy ugly AND ALSO grossly overweight, so we all shouldn't care as they are as important as a rock to impress anyways.

If those actually got "leaked" out and you could even see each persons face, do you know how much you could sue the government for? Who......fucking......cares.

Yes, society fears anything in the news that is repeated and repeated into our skulls. I think if anything people who are being "potrayed" as islamic, terrorist looking or middle eastern decent have it harder flying in the US than anyone period.

On a side note, I am now dissapointed: I actually enjoy the standing ovation at the airport when they analyze my pipe and bombs...damn government always taking the excitement out of everyday living.

L3 isn't the major supplier of body scanners. Rapiscan beat them out for the major TSA contract with their backscatter-based Sercure 1000 (The AIT mentioned in the article) and I think the only L3 ProVisions still installed are left over from the initial evaluation pilot.

Who else had an an mm-wave option in that race? Smith's?

DAMN - I was just about to apply for a TSA job - now I have to get my nudes the old fashioned way.

Yea, because a company would totally skimp on security because their planes blowing up wouldn't cost them money and PR.

That shit I just typed was sarcasm.

The American people don't live in the middle east, either.

Having my twig and berries viewable to some low paid "security" person is not really of huge concern for me, the whole xray bit is what I don't like.

Don't ask me why the metal detector plus electronic nose to test for explosive residue is not effective anymore, but whatever.

That and a study a while back indicates that mm wave has the capability to damage the DNA of the person being scanned. Don't know if that applies to this particular wavelength of mm wave, but that's what was published a while back.

I'm about as worried about mm wavelength as I am about having a cellphone too close to my nuts, Xrays however are proven they can cause damage to dna, cells, everything.

I remember the last time I took a flight (pre-9/11) they rubbed a small piece of cloth over my items, and stuck that in a machine and pushed a button to test for any sort of explosive residue... why do we need full body invasion scanning when we already had this? Plastic knives? Give me a fucking break, hopefully pilots learned to turn the lock on the doors so plastic knives aren't an issue... why we have these? Some got some good greased palms that gave them a huge fucking government contract.

That's the point. Tel Aviv's airport and El Al flights originating from there have been fucked with only twice since 1968, from a quick look-see on wikipedia...
