Happy New Year Commandos!

Just wanted to start some discussions on possible project work for January and beyond. There were a lot of non-BOINC project discussions for this month, although with the holidays and just finishing up the WCG races I dont want to do anything too structured this month. :) If anyone has suggestions for an more organized group effort for next month let me know.

For January, if anyone is looking for a good project I have a couple suggestions. It would seem that in Muon1 the 6 teams ranked directly ahead of us are fairly inactive. A good month and we could probably overtake 3 of them. If anyone needs help setting up the client let me know I have a write around here somewhere.

Also I know that Razor has been doing some great work in PSP. Looks like he will be one pace to pass a couple more teams by the end of the month, but Im sure he could use a little help. ;)

If anyone has any free GPUs, primegrid has some good scoring CUDA work right now and we are trying to keep our team rank in the mid-40s.

Whatever you decided to crunch thanks for contributing. I see a lot of folks out there crunching a project by themselves to try and gain us some ground or at least keep us on the level. Good work everyone.

I am going to finish up the BOINC work I have in my queue and then move to Muon1.

I was about to email the captain, now I don´t need to.
only have one dual and one quad in,they basically do their thing, wcg.

a good thing for wcg is that those really suck for f@h, did have one quad cpu more but had issues with wcg/boinc even with all gpu deactiveted, only run cpu,got a hard time switching from none sli to sli on my gaming pc,do game occasionally, and for some reason with wcg/boinc gone it worked fine- do switch to sli when gaming, need that added juice ;) (xp32,nv driver 260.99 btw),and yes,do GPU-folding otherwise, not [H] there, shame on me,but looks like [H] folding manage well enough :p

dunno why, anyway it won´t be an issue in a not so distant future when my gear gets moved around so that amd 940 goes to wcg then,it also suck in f@h :D Do have another sucky cpu for f@h that is,amd 630,which might get in as well, have to check things like powerbills, energycrisis here atm.

for what it is worth I´m happy with the projects, even if clean water and clean energy suits my interests most, they others is more than worthy projects.

I currently have one box on Muon, one on GIMPS, and one on BOINC (Yoyo and SZTAKI). I might move the BOINC box to Muon too. I have some GPUs I can throw at GPUGRID.

I was working on some Enigma@home just to get a few quick points for the team, plus I really just wanted to be first on one of the teams we have :)

I may do some more muon1 as well as I try to do some PrimeGrid for the GPU but, the GPU client seems to slow down my computer really bad for the graphics where Collatz doesn't. Does anyone else see this? For example like the loading of even menus is slower.

I am also down a CPU since I have to buy new fans for my new Norco 4020 for my WHS box. The case is unbearable to even be in the same room let alone try to sleep with it on.

Yes, PrimeGrid on CUDA and ATI cards are so busy doing the work unit that it does cause a lot of graphic slowdown on the desktop.

Going to keep crunching WCG for a while on my home server. I want 1 million points on that project :D

Yeah Ive noticed a lot of slow down while using Primegrid as well but Ive just been suspending the GPU WU's while im using the machine and then resuming them when I am done.

Just a note to anyone that might be trying to run Primegrid GPU WUs and Muon1 (or probably any other non-BOINC project. My Primegrid unit kept suspending because CPU usage was too high when I started Muon1. Under the BOINC preferences there is a setting called 'While processor usage is less than XX percent.' I had to set this to 0 to run both BOINC and Muon1 at once. Just in case anyone else runs into this.

My GTX 295 is only partially loaded running PrimeGrid. I've seen this before, and I'm not sure if it's a problem with the drivers or BOINC or what. At any rate, it doesn't seem to be interfering with GIMPS on the same box.

Im running it on a 8800gts so it probably effects it more and loads it fully, I'll have to check to see the load on it when I get back to my apartment tonight.

Oh man. tr0ach - whats going on over there? :( Hopefully maybe just rearranging some hardware?

For Muon how do most people run it? I was wondering because I usually run the cmdline.bat but, does the cmdline.bat auto send the results or must it be manually sent? I usually just run the manualsend but, I'd like to just be able to set it and forget it on my Server and extra Desktop.

I usually just run the Muon1_background.exe file. That way there are no windows open etc and the results just upload automatically. Nothing to worry about. I just check my stats (on freedc) from time to time to make sure everything is good.

Thats exactly how I run it. To shut it down I right click and End Process in Task Manager.
Free-DC DPAD is Muon 1.

I also run Muon1_background.exe.

Of course GIMPS would update the client right after I kick off some LL work. I guess I'll update in a month or two. :)

In Windows you wont loose any progress, maybe 5 minutes worth if you shut down and paste the new files over the old ones and start it back up again. The new versions are much faster than the older ones. Should only take about 30 days to run an LL on mid OC'd core with the new version, thats about 1/3 less time than the older client versions.

Just bought a GTX460 recently, now I can try and compete better with you guys and the GPUs. :) Milkyway here I come!

Cool, I'll try it. I forget what my 920 is clocked at, but probably around 3.6.

Nice Eric. Did you get the 768MB or 1GB model? I have been thinking of upgrading to one of those to use on Primegrid as the 768 ones are really cheap.

I got one of the 768 models. Its a Galaxy model because I had a gift card to Best Buy and that was one of the few brands they sell. I spent a premium obviously but, there was nothing else I really wanted. Its not too bad of a model except it feels a bit cheap for the cover (the heatsink is solid though) and the fan at 100% is pretty loud. I have it at 75% and the the temps are at 63C with 100% load.

Setup my old 8800gts on the secondary computer and now can run PrimeGrid on that as well. :)

I better hurry up and get my 25 million in PrimeGrid so I can get back on Milkyway - there's a new lawn mower in town.
That card would produce I bet about 400-500k a day in PrimeGrid. Nice going Eric!

Thanks Razor, but I can't celebrate yet my other desktop isn't POSTing anymore. I installed the 8800GTS it ran, rebooted itself and now won't post. Can't for the life of me find the culprit.

Been pushing hard at AQUA@home should be able to hold off a few teams as well as pass a few others :) What other projects are you guys working on this month?

Sorry guys been swamped at work so I havent been around much. Still crunching away though.

Eric I saw you have passed a couple teams in Aqua the past couple of days. nice work. Did you ever get your other machine to post?

Im still working on Muon1 mostly, with a core also on WCG and a core on QMC. Plus primegrid on my 8800GS.

Bummer man. Just a month ago I tried to put together a HTPC wtih a few spare parts i had in storage. I bought a dual core CPU from newegg and thought i was good to go. Not so much. The MB was dead, so i never built it. Not going to buy an ancient AM2 socket MB to replace it. Just saving up for a new GPU now. Hows your 460 doing?

BTW - tr0ach-Good to see your back!
Flogge-You still running just the one 4890 on MW?

Yeah I am having a hard time finding a mobo for it (775 c2d) thats good quality and all i see are micro ATX. The 460 is a monster i never used to break 15k now I am doing over 100k on good days.

Also, it looks like AQUA@home is down right now.

Tried asus P5N-D ?
Have two of those my self, one as spare so if you had lived in scandinavia it could worked out ;)
Seriously got one as used( demonstration sample) and one ordinary in a rather well equipped shop over here,so it should be possible to get one.
Not insanely good but decent enough for my e5300 and Q8400.

Yeah I would take you up on that offer but, as I live in the US shipping would be quite expensive, I just need something cheap but reliable.

yes,no point,shipping gets too expensive.
The one with q8400 is pretty stable doing wcg,not the greatest and pc6400 ram on it,it also runs two gpu´s,I say it is decent.
If you manage to get one over there, absolutely clueless unless newegg don´t have any ?
good luck anyway :)

Bought a ASUS P5N-B from newegg, it was open box but it was cheap and is full ATX which I like. An early birthday present to myself :)

Good to hear Eric. Good luck with the new build. Im sure you'll have it crunching in no time.

Looks like we are closing in on another spot in Muon1!

Anyone heard from Jathanis? I havent seen him around lately. :(

I dunno, on a HD5770 + i7 920, I didn't notice the slowdowns (if any). Using CCC 10.12.

On an E7200 + HD5770, using 11.1, I've definately noticed the slowdowns...

both cases, using no CPU crunching.

Briliu - Being 3rd in project rank in Muon1 is a very large responsibility...
I see you will be taking on all this pressure in the next few days. All though I appreciate your gallant conquests, I'm not quite sure if you understand what you are about to endure as the Commando who has a shot at the Muon1 Master (SazanEyes - who was recently anointed the first Hard DC'er award for 2011 !!) and if you can get through the All Powerful Wizard - tr0ach, there will always be the slain Razor for ever chasing you in your dreams.

jeremy - Are you crunching Primegrid for the [H]orde? If so what is your username for Primegrid? What kind of production do you get from your 5770?

Oh no. Briliu - You are turning heads. Do i sense a battle for Muon1 dominance? :D Keep up the good work man. We are closing in on 16th place!

I'd be more inclined to commit CPU cycles to Muon1 if it were bundled under BOINC and monitoring the client status was a bit easier than waiting for the stats to update.

I can't stop looking at that green lawn mower going by every four seconds. Nice! :)

This is drving me crazy, I installed the new Mobo and still nothing, I am not even getting any error beeps. For example I had the RAM completely out and it just hung with the fans running. Cannot get the POST beep, this PC is driving me crazy. I think it may be the CPU but, even then I am not sure.

Have you tried a different PSU? That would be my guess before the CPU. If you want to borrow an E6600 for debugging, let me know.

I haven't tried that. Only the PSU and the CPU are left to check I guess. (I didn't check the PSU before because it starts up to the point that the fans are running and the HDD is spinning but, it won't POST. Thanks for the offer as well, I may take you up on it if it doesn't respond to my other PSU.

Not too many active people in muon1! It's rather cool to be so h igh up in the standings! My personal goal is to be on the first page of the stats on the official muon1 site ;) That may or may not involve passing you, razor :D

The whole P67 chipset business has thrown off my plans for upgrading. I was planning on building a 2600k see how that'd do at 4.5GHz at muon, but alas! I guess I wait for march to turn on the heat!

Either way, I'm coming for you Razor and tr0ach!

Looks as if we are going to loose a spot in PSP PRP for now and I have moved my CPU's off PSP and put them on SOB.
I should be able to pick up some new video cards next week, I'm thinking a couple 400's or a nice 500 to put on the new CUDA PRPNet 4.1.3 Beta client that requires double precision.
This will allow me to get back on PSP PRP and move us foreword again.
