Asus P8P67 Pro issue - Getting very close to returning it

Wtf is this anyway?

asus.png
Saw this as well in the Asus monitoring suite, it was after a few hours of benchmarking but there is no way that it is accurate. A quick reboot into the uefi showed normal mobo temps so I'm not worried.

So, after updating to 1203 and reenabling C3 and C6. It's been up and running for nearly 24 hours. So this leads me to believe its some setting in the BIOS such as upping ram voltage to 1.55v or some driver conflict in windows.

Is it possible that this new power management is a bit green and could present a long term stability issue with these boards?

I just started having this issue within the last couple days. The system has been running for nearly 2 weeks without issues and then all of a sudden, it started this crap.

I have since reverted to 1204 from 1253 as of today and hope it doesn't keep doing this. Its so damn annoying and intermittent.

Last night I exchanged my problematic Asus P8P67 Pro motherboard to Micro Center for a new board, hoping that my lock-up / freezing issues was due to a bad board

I popped in the new motherboard last night, upgraded to the 1204 BIOS and played with it 'til 2:00am or so without any issues.

Woke up this morning and my system was locked up again, frozen with no power to keyboard or mouse and no video or hard drive flashing. ARGH!

One strange side-effect, not sure if it's related, but whenever I get up and find my system locked-up, I'll take a look at my laptop and notice it lost Internet connectivity .. This morning, I couldn't browse the web at all. I looked at my network lights on the new i5-2500k system and they were still flashing. Unplugged the network cable from the back of that system, and instantly my Internet connectivity on the laptop started working.

Almost like this frozen system was overloading my network or router, strange

Anyway, I added my system specs to my signature and I'm just about ready to give up .. I haven't even been able to play with what this system might be able to do, due to the locking up 2 or 3 times a day.. ugh

Thats the EXACT issue that I'm having. It made my network become unresponsive entirely until the computer was unplugged from the ethernet or it was powered off.

Glad I'm not the only one but its extremely annoying.

I can use the computer for hours with not instability but once I leave it alone for awhile, it does this. :(

I also have this same exact issue. I've tried everything listed in this thread so far and nothing has solved it. I was just about to call in an RMA for it, but now with the Intel issue it looks like I'll be sending it back anyways.

It's so awesome to see Asus support folks on the forum like they do here, but such a shame they're making such a buggy product.

ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
my board suppose to be coming back this week after i sent it back to newegg cause of this issue.

For those of you having the "freezes when left alone overnight issue" on P8P67 PRO boards, I was also having this with both the stock 8##, and newer 1053 BIOSes. I made changes and then left my PC on for several nights to see if it would lockup.

There were two things I did and have not had the freezes since:

1) Remove Intel's Rapid Storage Tech drivers (I actually simply did not reinstall them after a clean Win7 install)
2) Disable all Power Saver Options under the Intel 82579V Gigabit LAN's Power Management tab from within Device Manager

One of these two things seems to have fixed it. My computer has been on for 6 days now without freezing, so the odds seem good. I'm currently running with the 1253 BIOS, though I'm not sure if that matters.

I should also add that this morning when it locked up, it was sleeping and not idle. I hit the power button and the computer came back alive but without the monitor, keyboard and mouse. I disabled the Intel gigabit LAN adapter completely for the time being and I'll see if it makes any difference.

I also disabled all power saving options and I have been running for about 3 days now with no problems.

I left my ethernet unplugged last night on the hunch it might be that and it seems like it definitely might coincide with it as my system was up and running this morning. I just disabled the power saving features and will see how that goes. Thanks.

I'm having lock-up issues on my P8P67 Pro as well. Turned off all of the power options in the NIC screen. Going to see if that helps first. Odd thing is my wife experiences a problem with the mouse locking up, or the whole system locking up, with normal use (Firefox/Office..no gaming).

Add the Intel issue to this, I'm starting to regret upgrading to Sandy Bridge...

Was good for a few days and just froze up a few minutes ago. Not sure what to do at this point.

FFS....
just got my replacement board....
and it froze 5 mins into it after installing windows 7..for crying outloud..

SO PISSED

EDIT: hmm...it froze in the middle of installing intel rapid storage....

when i rebooted it appears it installed properly....

To re-summarize, and with a few more notes:

1) Uninstall Intel's Rapid Storage Tech drivers. Gary from ASUS recently announced that there are known issues with the drivers from Intel that will be addressed in tandem with firmware (BIOS) updates in the near future. This may or may not be related to the freezes, but my computer froze more frequently when these were installed.

2) Disable all Power Saver Options under the Intel 82579V Gigabit LAN's Power Management tab from within Device Manage.

3) From within the same tab as #3, enable both Wake On Lan options. Note that this will prevent the system from ever powering down the adapter.

4) Under what I think is the PCI/Power section in the BIOS (can't check right now), there is an option to enable functionality for PCI devices (which is how you ultimately enable WakeOnLan). This may or may not be necessary depending on how the OS handles item.

For testing, I found that having another computer on my network attempt to copy a large shared file across the network could pretty regularly cause the system to freeze. You might see if this happens on your end before making changes, as there's some peace of in having a quasi-reproducible test case.

I've done 2 and 3 of that list so far and its been running fine for nearly 48 hours now. The weekend is coming up and that is when I started seeing this issue last week so we'll see if it survives another couple days.

Its just weird that, for me, it started after being completely stable for nearly a week. Maybe its from lack of use as I didn't have time to actually do anything on the system. We'll see.

Wanted to post a note that I followed Azymn's previous advice (removed Intel's Rapid Storage Tech drivers, disabled Power Saver Options under the Intel 82579V Gigabit LAN's Power Mgmt tab within Device Manager) on the evening of 01/31/11

My system has been up without any lock-ups or freezes since then. My last freeze / lock-up was the morning of 01/31/11, I restarted my PC around 8am when I found it locked-up

Knock on wood that I don't jinx anything, but thanks so much for the advice!

Welp, I guess I spoke too soon about it being fine.

Woke up this morning to an unresponsive computer. Although, this time the keyboard and mouse lights were still lit.

Has Gary said anything about this yet?

Not that I have seen. Maybe a new thread should be started just about this problem. Its kind of buried in here.

This has been happening once or twice daily for me on my P78P67 Deluxe.

Just sitting at the desktop with sleep disabled it locks up and takes my network down with it.

I never installed the Intel RST drivers in the first place and have tried turning off the power saving feature of the Intel LAN port. Same.

Even tried limiting speed to 100 since I am not using Cat 6. Same.

Now I have disabled the Intel LAN port and am trying the Realtek port instead.

--Mark--

Update: Since i recieved my new mobo and replaced it, it only froze the one time which was prior any drivers/windows updates were installed.

Since than ( still too soon to tell) it hasn't froze yet. Everything is at stock, ram speed showing at 1333 versus the 1600

i left it on overnight and it did sleep but was able to wake it.

*knock on wood*

It just happened again while I was simply browsing with Firefox.

Nothing else running except a couple desktop gadgets.

This time though, my network remained up, unlike with the Intel LAN port.

It just freezes solid, no BSOD or anything else. Mouse and keyboard both freeze right where they were.

Upon reset, there is nothing I could find in the Windows Event Log.

Very strange.

Anyone have any ideas?

I have sent Gary a PM regarding this issue. Hopefully it is something that is currently being worked on as it is extremely annoying.

I have posted this before and nobody commented. My system was running rock solid for 2 weeks until my 2 Samsung 1tb drives arrived. Upon plugging them into the 3gb sata ports I experienced the exact same thing you are. Freeze just from simply browsing the internet. I tried uninstalling the Intel drivers (they were the 10.0 version) and going with the stock Windows 7 drivers. It seemed to fix it but a couple of hours later the freeze occurred again. I then installed the newer intel INF drivers as well as the the newer 10.1 drivers and everything has been solid for the past week. Knock on wood!

so this is the second BSOD playing sc2

it wasn't like before where it would freeze and i have to press the reset button.

this is what came up

Update -
We setup five stations to try to replicate this problem and so far all machines have over 100 hours on them without a problem, this includes multiple sleep routines, benchmarks, network transfers, etc before just letting them sit and run. We have not rebooted the stations yet.

So I am gathering complete system configurations from affected users now and will have an udpate early next week.

Not even a single freeze?

THANK YOU
my computer hasn't froze the same way since i replaced the mobo (but now getting BSOD), but my first one didn't start freezing till 5 days after. but glad this is being tested.

Hello people.

Just made an account to be able to take part in this discussion, as I seem to be having the exact same problem (random freeze, often paired with high-pitched noise coming from the realtek output)

My setup:
I5 2500K
Asus P8P67 Evo
2x4 Gb DDR 1600 (CORSAIR -CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 8gb kit (2x4gb) 1600Mhz DDR3)
2x Saphire Radeon 6950 (2g memory, no bios flash yet)
OCZ vertex 2 120G (@intel 6Gbs connector)
WD caviar black 2000G 64mb cache sata 300 7200RPM (@intel 6Gbs connector)
2x samsung 750G 7200rpm HD's (from my old build, @ Marvell controller ports atm)
All in an Obsidian 800D Full tower case.

I have built this rig last sunday, it has been running @ stock speeds & getting the freeze thing 2-3 times a day. What I am doing with the PC at the time of the freeze doesn't seem to be having anything to do with the problem. It can happen in games, while browsing, while doing nothing at all. All temperatures on the system are more then fine.

What I have tried to fix this issue:

* Updated to bios 1024 ; no succes
* Disabled all kind of power saving options, including Netword / screen / HDDs: no succes
* uninstalled intell mass storage software : no succes

Last step: Plugged out the 2 750g HD's that where on the Intell controller; put em on the marvell one: PC froze up a few mins after I did that. It has managed to go trough the night without freezing tough, and will keep the system running & update here when I get back from work.

Any comments / help / things to try out are appreciated!

Well, I'll throw another wrench into the mix
First of all, if some HDD only get intermittently detected while in Windows and you are using white and black supplied SATA cables - you might wanna check and make sure they are fully in - the cableclips and the ports are quite tight.
Better yet to go to Fry's and get straight to straight SATA 6. I really wish those ports were at 45 degrees.. If you use white and black ASUS cables you have to hear the click sound when inserting - best to put in lower port 2 cable first, then upper cable Port 1 so you can see.

Along these lines......
Heres another landmine you prob havent even heard of as of yet
ZoZo2 on "the other site" had 2 Samsung F3 which he decided to move to Intel SATA 6Gb/s ports (port1 and port 2) not wanting to run them on the "bad" SATA 3Gb/s ports (ports 3-4-5-6) What ensued is reboots and freezes, and drive disappearances. This was with the MSI mobo. He also tried on the ASUS and he got strange noises - a sound like a fan blade hitting a cable. This does sometimes happen on the Marvel 6G ports - especially when you dont use the latest marvel drivers avail at ASRock. Strictly by accident he stumbled accross a HDD firmware update for his Samsungs - problem solved completely.

There are only 24 drives listed in newegg with SATA 6 interface and my WDC 1TB FEAX is one of them
I do NOT know if this has any bearing on things - just mentioning it.

Summary:
This happens mostly on Intel SATA 6 - SOME HDD (Samsung F3 older), not all
This MAY happen with Intel SATA6 PLUS Marvel SATA 6 usage
You will def get reboots with JMicron turned on and nothing in it.
This happens with both ASUS and MSI but with slightly dif symptoms
This happens less with no Intel 10.1.1008

Conclusion:
Intel Southbridge will not detect, or do so intermittently with certain brand OLDER HDD firmware that do not have specific coding to allow Intel Port 1 and 2 to allow it as a SATA 6 drive or is buggy by itself. This may be why some guys have no probs - newly purchased new model drives, and some do - old drives. There ARE drives SATA that are specifically specced as SATA 6 interface EVEN THO they only do 143MB/s transfer and 246 Burst
You could try 5-6 jumper to make 3Gbs set max on later drives (WDC)
If you want trouble free Intel SATA 6Gb useage, make sure the drive specs say SATA6 interface. Or at least until they fix this issue. Then again, even these drives may need firmware update. At the very least either Intel or ASUS should give Samsung a call and ask them what kinda magic is in their firmware fix
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/faqView.do?b2b_bbs_msg_id=308&ref=dynamitedata.com

Addenda:
If you have TPU switch "UP" (on) and you have booted and rebooted at least once - you are overclocking and not in any powersave or normal mode.
After you boot into the bios you will see no mode selected and BCLK at 103 in advanced.
The way you tell is get latest CPUID (NOT the one on their site) 1.5.6.1 or 1.5.6.2 beta or 1.5.6.3beta, start it up and run Prim 95 1M next to it, then watch your CPU speed go full bore.

Addenda 2:
If you go into power options in Win 7 balanced mode - you will also have to go into advanced and muck around in there. Since I never allow hibernate or sleep - with a P67 mobo there is no reason for it, so I ignore it
You might also want ot quickly look at the CPU minimum
However if you do pick powersave mode in EZmode page, it may conflict with Win powersaving, but I dont think anyone here will do that.

Final question:
Do I or do I NOT have to use SATA 6 cables on Intel SATA6????????????????
Can anyone answer DEFINITIVELY?

For the final question, I am using the white and black cables that came with the motherboard. I believe those are SATA 6 compliant. If not, they were working fine before I fried my bios with an update.

FWIW
Right click format USB stick FAT 32 ONLY
Put ROM on USB stick by itself bare naked no folders, rename rom to any 8 letters or less, no spaces like "Feb1204.rom" - does not cause any harm
go to bios set failsafe defaults (NO overclocking)
Make sure TPU switch is off
reboot to shutdown
reboot to ezflash and run
reboot to shutdown
reset CMOS
reboot to bios - redo settings or bring back profile you previously saved

System stalled again seconds after I turned off my screen & left for work.

Should I try unplugging / disabling my 2 old Samsung 750g disks (currently on the marvell ports)?

dont disable - remove power plugs and see what happens
I would be REALLY curious as to outcome!

Did not know about this thread. But looks very similar to the one I have started at http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1036802434&postcount=1 you may want to look at it.

Reading this thread I now have some more tests to do:
  • Update ATI drivers to 10.12a
  • Turn TPU switch on
  • Try to disable C3/C6 report to OS
  • disable power off on monitors and replace with screen saver
  • Need to check power saving on devices (I think it's already done)
If you read the thread referenced above you'll see that I am using a very nice utility from PassMark that you can find at http://www.passmark.com/products/sleeper.htm
It allows you to cycle through S0/S1/S3 states and seems to reproduce the problem faster than waiting an all night to see if system Hang. I was able to reproduce the problem already two times in less than an hour!

Does anybody have meanings for all the ASL Qled status code ???
