Xbox Live Labels Autistic Boy "Cheater"?

I could give two shits what you think. I'll stick up for an autistic kid any day.

Yea, I stand up for special needs kids, too. But, did he cheat or didn't he? Regardless of if he is autistic, the Pope, or Jesus Christ himself, cheating is cheating. The rules out there. If he circumvented the normal placeguards, then he cheated.

Theres already a link in this thread where MS says they personally looked into it and yes he was cheating.

But you know when not to let the thoughts in your head spill out like my autistic son, crap he heard 3 years ago on TV shows and games I played he can repeat near verbatim. Which is why I no longer am allowed to play nor is he M games. Because I dont really like getting notes home that his para heard my 12 year old repeating scenes from Left for Dead or some of the other M games around and trying to explain to the school why he was talking about how Big Daddy kept throwing him across the room (that was a fun one thought for sure I was going to be talking to the police on that one) Big BUTT here, I'm not saying everone needs to keep there kid from playing M games thats a parents choice just like taking them to an R movie you need to know what the kids can handle and what they cant. I could handle killing Zombies in Wolfenstien, Demons in Doom, Killing thousands of baddies in Secret of the Silver Blades and not having what I was saying to someone be taken the wrong way.

If it's too soon at 11, that's cool, I said so. And it depends on the player and the game. I used to have nightmares, but not from any mature content (random stuff like ninja turtle villains), so I wouldn't wish that on any kid. Or violent verbal outbursts.

Violence is pretty common. Some of the stuff on SyFy has really disturbed me, at about 9 at night (decapitations), it would really scare me if I were 11.

And there is something to be said for in-game people looking so realistic now, it's more jarring (and sprays of blood, screams, etc.). Gunning down pixellated Nazis is much more abstract.

From the game forum:

Down right now, but I looked at the preview of the page.

LOL, owned. http://twitter.com/Stepto/statuses/30407631260614656#

Update 2: Reader QualityJeverage pointed us to the Twitter of Stephen Toulouse, director of policy and enforcement for Xbox Live, who had this to say about the incident:

We confirmed there were cheated achievements and gave the parent the details. This wasn't a "he played too good" situation at all.

Well you can't expect MS to alter their policies because some autistic kids have some OCD compulsion to score all the achievements.

i honestly dont care of users cheat to get pointless gamerscores and achievements

So I guess somebody at microsoft is saying they personally looked into it and there were cheated achievements on the account or some such. So somebody hacked his account? Autistic kids a haxor? His Mom's a haxor? I don't get it?

I admit regardless I'm on the kids side. As long as he's not bothering anybody he can hack all he wants, but I could give a fuck about microsoft or xbox live achievements so I'm a bit biased.

Uh... Honestly, who the hell cares if a select minority go out of their way to cheat achievements?

It doesn't affect us, we don't care (okay, some people with an attitude might, but come on, do you realise how sad you're sounding?) so why the hell bother going out of your way to ban these guys?

For the majority, we earn achievements as they come and get personal satisfaction when we personally achieve them. If some people want to cheat their achievements, let them. We have better things to worry about, like the hacking that can go on in some games. THAT'S the real problem, as it affects US directly and ruins our online experience.

It isn't like it takes some 'haxor skills'. People take the HD from the system, use the HD transfer cable that converts it into a standard USB, and then activate achievements by clicking little check boxs in freely available programs. I think I've read they even have sites out there that have time-lines of achievements so it looks normal ' eg timestamp that a person completed level1 in 10 minutes, then level 2 in 20 minutes, etc. Seems pointless to me - but some people out there are obsessed with their gamer scores.

Im surprised that so many people in this forum say they don't care if he cheats yet if he cheated in a pc game they would be all over it.

I don't think it's a console vs PC thing, but more of a in game cheat (aimbot, wall hack, etc) vs. accomplishment hack.

Who really cares about the accomplishment lists anyway?

Meh, I only care if cheating affects me personally in an online match. Otherwise, go nuts.

Still I'm stuck on how this kid or his mom accomplished this.

I don't do clans and matches, I never have.

I do enjoy me some punning though and find that cheaters really ruin the experience.

I really couldn't care less about people hacking their steam/xbox live accomplishments or PS3 trophies though. Those are just silly anyway.

I think it's sillier to cheat to get them...

If a game is single player, I say do what ever you need to enjoy the game including cheating. After all whose being hurt? However, in multiplayer games cheating is never excusable. The kid got what he deserved. With that being said, maybe I'm just too old school but, I have never understood the big deal about achievements and generally think they are kind of silly.

They just generally make a game last longer by giving you something to work for, with something to show at the end of it.

I only get them because it's fun working for them, and without them I might not have done whatever task it wanted me to do.

Of course, some games have some stupidly ridiculous achievements, and I hate it when they do that. (10001 kills? Really? Gtfo)

That was supposed to say "pubbing"

So, autism isn't all that bad. What a scare tactic by the industry that autism must be stopped.

LMAO

Got through the first, couldnt read all 6 pages.....

Did anyone consider the kid DID cheat but due to Autism doesnt really comprehend the ramifications of his actions, that MS caught the cheat and banned him appropriately, the kid WAS devasted, and all of this is due to regular ass douchebags doing this every day necessitaty a security team that bans cheaters.........?

Dude, I hope they put a "I'm Autistic" tic box in the profile so I can my hacks on!

Yeah, tough luck. If they make exceptions for anyone, everyone will jump on the "I'm autistic so I didn't know!" bandwagon.

Isn't that up to the parents....etc. etc. <snip> ....point is, it's different for every kid and every family and they should be able to make that choice themselves

The reason I brought up the fact the kid is playing only M rated games at 11 years old is because the kid's Mom flat out said the word "cheater" was going to scar him for life (*hint, the kind of scarring that only a check from MS can fix! *hint) ....but blowing people up, dismemberment, head shots and sex scenes are okay?

No biggy, she just made hersef look retarded / asleep at the wheel on national news.

If he couldnt comprehend this then he had no business on Live.

I dont care what your mental handicap is if you cheat GTFO. He still has all the single player in the world he can cheat at.

Are you fucking serious? The difference in maturity between 11 and 17 is fucking astronomical...

It does not depend on the kid. 11 year old playing M rated games is a bad idea all around.

I find it hard to believe somoene would actually make that argument but here you are...

Yes i am completely fucking serious. Not all 17 yro olds are the most mature. Some 17 years olds will play games and decide to reinact what they see. Just how some will watch Jackass and decide to try to skate off the roof. Not all 11 year olds are going to do that. I played mortal kombat when i was 12. Before then I was 7 and started watching stuff like Hellraiser, Silent Night Deadly Night, Nightmare on Elm street... stuff like that. I never once thought of trying to kill somebody. I never tried to freeze somebody, light them on fire...

Isn't that up to the parents? My mom let me and brother watch freddy fruger when we were like 6 and 8... she explained it wasn't real and it was just for fun, like halooween... made sense to me at the time and neither of us grew up mentally disturbed or violent.

point is, it's different for every kid and every family and they should be able to make that choice themselves

Exactly

Still I'm stuck on how this kid or his mom accomplished this.

I did a quick search online and found a guild on youtube for how to do it. Pretty simple for anyone that know even halfway to use a computer to do. download 3 programs, copy your profile to a usb drive, plug that into the computer, use one program to extract the info from your profile, use a 2nd program to tell it to modify that extracted file to give you all achivements, then used the 3rd to rehash the file, use the 1st to import your modied info back into the profile, import back to your xbox. now that we know that they actually did show that "he" was cheating, his mom either wanted to give him a false impression that he was doing good by unlocking stuff for him just to lie to him about it. Or she was trying to unlock stuff in games for him to not have beet it on his own and came accross that and though it unlocking achivements would unlock more of the game.

I'm just amazed that they would make the local files the master...

Thats like inviting people to abuse the system...

Autism and Bipolar are the new buzz words being thrown around. ADD must be pissed off its losing the crown.

Steve, some of us grew up watching animated characters playing with dynamite, shotguns, and axes. We turned out okay.
I remember seeing much worse as a kid. Take Poltergeist for example. Somehow that movie received a PG rating when we know there is no way in hell a child should watch that.
