Hitachi 2TB Harddrive Owner's Thread

Regarding my last post, it is in fact the Hitachi drive. I removed it and now my pc boots up like lightning. Should I re-install windows, or is there something else I can try? There's over 1.5tb of data on there and I have no room to back it up elsewhere, unless I order a new drive to clone it to.

system specs?

Gigabyte EP45-UD3P
Q9550
Galaxy GTX 480
Lite-on DVD drive
Auzentech Forte
8gb g.skill ddr2
120gb g.skill ssd
2tb hitachi deskstar
2 x 1tb Samsung F3

I re-installed windows last night and the problem remains. I think I either have to format the drive, which would have to wait, or change some bios setting.

The first thing I would do - assuming you care about the data - is leave the drive powered off until you buy another 2TB drive to back the data up to. If the drive is dying it may only have a limited amount of runtime left before the data becomes completely inaccessible.

Once the data is backed up, you could use CrystalDiskInfo, Hard Disk Sentinel or HDTune and check SMART stats for clues (excessive sector reallocations or any other issues). SMART stats aren't the final word in disk health because I've seen drives die (not Hitachi but just in general) that SMART had reported as 100% healthy.

Lastly you could run Hitachi's DFT (Drive Fitness Test) for clues about health, and finally, RMA the drive, depending.

Under drive health in HD Tune, I'm getting a lot of errors. None of them seem to be SMART related, but it looks bad enough. Also, other drives that are not giving me trouble have the same readings. I am kind of thinking that HD Tune is inaccurate, but I'm not sure.

The Frys in austin jsut got some more in stock, I grabbed two and they are the new 7k3000 drives and say SATA 6gb/s on the drive. No outward changes at all to the box.

Just an FYI.

What was the Fry's in Austin selling them for? If they were on sale, I must have missed it (again!)

Just a heads-up.

J&R is currently selling the 3TB Retail Kit (in-stock) for $179.99 with free shipping, which is the lowest price I've seen so far.

I have the 2TB Hitachi and its the loudest HDD I ever had. Do most of you experienced the same issue?

did you buy a refurb/open box from somewhere? i have many of these 2TB hitachi's and the only ones that are audible or have excessive vibration are the ones that i bought openbox from newegg and had either been damaged (dropped) before or during shipping. they were returned.

got it brand new from Frys, didn't buy any more because of noise issue. Other than that it performs well.

The picture of the box states 64 mb cache, but the description says 32. Which is it, do you know? Thanks.

I find them quite a bit louder than the WD Greens I was using previously. I ended up moving the server to a (ventilated) closet so I don't have to listen to them anymore, but compared to the greens I had before, I did notice a difference. I remember reading about these on NewEgg when first shopping and reading reviews ranging from "quiet and cool" to "jet engine loud and hot," so I think like anything, what different people consider loud might be different, but I'm with you, they're a bit louder than some others I've used.

i have bunch of HDDs.

including

6 WD Greens EARS 2TB
1 WD Black 2TB
3 seagate LP 2tb
1 hitachi 2tb
2 samsung F4EG 2tb
and few other 1TB and 1.5TB versions (samsung, hitachi, seagate, WD)

And hitachi is the loudest one, everytime it reads or writes i can hear it from under the desk.

but so far samsung and hitachi are the only brand of HDD that never failed on me

I find my 7K2000 significantly quieter then my 1TB WD Blacks which are very loud.

Here is a noise comparison Tom's did back around the 7K2000 launch:

The 2TB just showed up for $99.99 in Fry's Sunday newspaper ad as well.

There is also the new Hitachi 3TB external for $159.99, which is an amazing price considering the internal go for $20+ more online.

Both valid through 1/27/2011. No purchase limit.

3TB for $160 is like 2TB for $120, which is awesome. Looks like I'm going to have to take back my decision about waiting for Hitachi's 4TB drives to replace my 2TB.

$99.99 at Fry's (in Austin at least) again today.

Fffffffffffffffff! I guess it's pointless to even wait for prices like that online, I need to have a buddy in Texas buy me 20 of them and ship them to me or something.

Odditory, check your math...its more like getting 2TB for $107. An even better deal than you thought!

What are peoples experiences cracking open those Hitachi XL external cases? Easy? Hard?

Is reassembly possible if you need to RMA something, or do they put warranty voiding stickers somewhere?

Newegg has the 5k2000 (2 TB 5900 rpm supposedly) for $99.99, the 7k3000 (2tb 7200rpm) for $119.99 currently.
XL 2TB for $89.99 after promo code (expires shortly).

The XLs can be opened but according to SD it's a one way procedure. With the simpledrive external I was able to reuse the enclosure. The drive inside the simpledrive was a typical 7k2000 and had a normal warranty according to the serial checker. Haven't had to RMA any of those external drives yet however.

Anyone know where I can find the firmware for HDS7220ALA330? Seems like only the 1TB drive versions are available.

FYI Newegg has 2TB 64MB 7K3000s for $99 with a code. Listed in the Newegg thread in [H]ot|Deals... wish they had that when I was buying my drives

unfortunately it only applies single $20 discount, so only good for 1 drive.

I just posted this thread, and someone recommended the 7K2000 drive. I figured I'd ask in here since it makes the most sense - is there a way to permanently set TLER with this drive? Will it work in a RAID-5 configuration out of the box?

Just a heads up, as long as you have a putty knife or something to jam into the gaps in the sides of the XL enclosure and pry up, you can very easily take the enclosure apart and get at the internal drive within, which is identical to a 7K3000; SATA 6.0 interface, 64MB cache. Just some crappy USB 2.0 bridge hanging onto the SATA end of it. So if there's a sale on the external version, feel free to go bonkers.

Just to be certain, mind running the drive through Hitachi's warranty page to see if there possibly is some hope of them still warrantying it?

I'll give it a go once I get back home. I believe some else reported the warranty showed up as good, but I'll confirm as well.

You don't need TLER on Hitachi drives, that is a Western Digital only thing.

The Hitachi 7K2000 has been widely proven to work just fine in RAID as-is, which is why they've been the most recommended drive for RAID arrays for quite some time on these forums. Hitachi doesn't pull B.S. like Western Digital with their firmwares.

If you're worried, you could run a batch script on boot setting CCTL with SmartCTL, but it's not really needed.

At work I have just joined the Hitachi 2GB owners club. I purchased 11 of them for a linux raid 6 setup to convert from an 8 drive 500 GB raid 5 to a 10 drive 2TB raid 6 array + spare. I am just a little more than half way through the conversion. The machine is an intel core2quad in an ASUS P5QL + 4GB DDR2 and I have added an intel SASUC8I to allow more than the 10 ports I had with the mobo ports + an Adaptec 4 port SATA controller.

I just checked the drive I unceremoniously ripped out of the external enclosure; the warranty shows up as valid for 3 years. Great!

OK, so just to be sure: an non-CCTLed 7K2000 won't fall out of a RAID array like a non-TLERed WD drive will?

[Edit]
Just noticed the response in http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1583028 Thanks guys!

Mind checking if the serial on the external chassis sticker matches the serial on the drive, or if they're different? thx.

Actually yes, it does match the S/N printed on the enclosure and also on the retail packaging. So the warranty may still be voided if they know which drives are assigned for external drives. Obviously if u try to RMA an external drive and u send an internal drive in they'll know the warranty is void already. In my case, 7 of my drives are proper internal versions, and 1 drive is ripped out of an external version, so it's not too big a deal.

*Also, looking more closely at the warranty date result, the warranty for external drive is actually only 1 year. The internal drives are 3 year. Well just goes to show you, if you want the full warranty and all 3 years, just bite the cost and buy the internal version.

exception being, if you buy a large quantity of 1-year or no-warranty drives at once, at a significant savings over the 3-year warranty version, there's an argument for putting the saved cost into additional spares and doing your own RMA's. i say this because in my experience Hitachi's tend to outlive their warranties before dying anyway (70 of the 126 hitachi's i deal with have already passed the 3-year mark and I had to RMA only one in that time - which i dropped six feet by accident).
