I am putting together 7 pc's for an office and have a question about the CPU's.

Should I go the AMD route and unlock the 4th core to have a quad or should I go with an I3/I5 for a bit more money?

The PC's will have 4gb ram and run W7Pro.

Lol, an unlocked AMD for the office? word and excel aint that resource heavy to compromise stability.

I would not count on an unlock for that many cpu s

Basic tasks. Office/Quickbooks. Nothing that would need a 4th core, but hey, I figured it'd be worth a shot.

I want to build a budget/low midrange computer that will last as long as what the business has right now. They are running W2000Pro so you know they are old.

If you are going the i3 route, wait until the Sandy Bridge i3 CPU have been released before making a judgement, IMO. In the past, Intel used to have the "platform" advantage, where Intel had everything in the platform under the Intel brand (well... Intel is one of the largest IC design and fab companies out there...). But now that AMD has bought off ATi and started branching out, it's more or less even, except for AMD's elusive GigE controller never seeing the light of day in a consumer motherboard...

If you are buying now? Whatever is more stable. One you price out quality components, the AMD setup could be about 20usd cheaper or so.

I have come up with a $100ish spread between the platforms. I have left it up to the customer since both machines are well above the requirements they need.

Thanks for the input people.
