XFX Radeon HD 6870 - $200 after $40 MIR @ Newegg

nice deal. how do these overclock? i was thinking about getting a 6950 since the 6970 is too much power draw for my psu, but if this can OC to about 6950 performance then maybe i'll give it a try. looks pretty comparable performance-wise to my 5870, but with less power draw so i can actually overclock, which i cant with my 5870. also want a 6950 for the extra dram though, since i game at high resolution.

Bastards! I ordered this last week when the rebate was only $20. Does newegg compensate?

Occasionally I've heard of people having success. However, it is not a stated policy. Worth a shot if you want to try. They may however send you to the manufacturer, since they managment the rebate.

If the rebate is a different amount, highly doubt Newegg will compensate you, it's not their rebate. If it was the actual price itself, they have been known to compensate, but it's hit-or-miss.

I got mine up to 925 from 900 on stock volts. Juicing it didn't really help either.

so not much? im not all that familiar with current gpu OCing but that seems pretty minimal to me.

GPU's tend to not OC well. There have been exceptions, like the 460 for instance, but most of the time getting more than a 10% increase in clockspeed for the GPU or RAM is uncommon.

At stock this is still a good deal though.

I think that sample has to be one of the worst as I've seen others hitting 950/975 on stock volts and up to 1100 w/ more.

That said, every 460 I've come across has had no problems moving from 675 past 850 and into 900's w/ voltage increases. 470's are the same, easily hitting 800 or more from their stock 607.

The reviews all show 5870's and 6870's going neck and neck w/ 470, but once overclocked, it's simply not the case. Take this MP Fraps run for example.

I get so confused reading Newegg feedback. Some say the card is not that large...others say its huge. Some say its pretty quiet...others say its noisy.

As I only have a single 1920x1080 monitor I think perhaps the 6850 will be good enough for my needs.

Whatever you do, reapply the thermal paste. I read two separate incidents where one person running Furmark with the fan at 100% went from 68 C to 63 C. Another person on Furmark went from 82 C to 74 C on auto, and the fan stabilized at 5% less.

Reapply the thermal paste.

I picked up an open-boxed 6870 for $180 and it's a GREAT card IMO. Excellent performance and decent price here.

Where's the power connector on this thing? Is it along the long side at the top, or along the short side at the end of the card? It's a tempting deal, but it might not fit in my case without some modifications :/

It's on the long side, like how nVIDIA has been doing it for some time. Look at the pictures, it is visible. The reference 6870 which this video card is based on is 9.5" long.

EDIT: Please disregard the 9.5" thing I wrote. [H] quoted the 6870 at 9.5", but some tech sites say 25cm(9.84") and Newegg says something else. I have no comment on this matter, I don't want to give harmful advice.

^Cool, thanks. One more thing. Newegg lists the card as 10.3" long. Does that include the mounting plate, or is this just for the reference card itself?

if other places are quoting 9.5 and 9.8 then that 10.3 is probably with the bracket included.
