This one handed Kinect hack actually looks like something that FPS gamers might like. Supposedly it can be used with any game that uses a mouse, keyboard, joystick or gamepad. Would you use something like this?

This and VR glasses and we have something. I can picture doing this while holding one of my airsofts while playing BOps :D

lol it is so NOT better than a mouse. This guy must just really suck with a mouse if he truely believes that. He runs into so much stuff and it's so slow it's like watching someone play with a gamepad.

not as good as mouse, maybe better then wii/move... but.. how do you strafe? isn't that a requirement? Also, wtf was that game, looked like some tech demo. He should've demo'ed it with an actual game if what he's claiming is true.

Anytime I'm moving my arm that much I can only last around 5 minutes.
And then I want to take a nap afterwards... :p

This is a very interesting concept but I agree with others. Your arm would be extremely tired of all this work.

In other news:

A potentially lethal standoff with the local SWAT team ended today without violence after the suspect, who barricaded himself in his mother's basement, gave up after a five minute standoff. The man could be heard telling the police "I just couldn't hold my gun up any longer..." as they took the man in custody.

On a related note, the reporter held her microphone up longer than the man arrested during today's standoff.

Back to you in the studio...

Well it would be nice if the guy used a spell checker but then his arm was probably too tired to click the menu option...

I'm not so fortunate to have a basement full of electronic goodies like this guy so I have to wonder how he got the gameplay footage on his desktop.

PC on set to spectate on his online game? Two webcams with one on him and one on his TV screen?

That was more interesting than his demo...

"Punch to fire," who can punch as fast as they can click a mouse button. Who could do it as often.

Does this guy ever look up or down? He seems to only be controlling in the horizontal plane.

I know a guy with MDA that would own his ass with ONLY a mouse. I know, I've watched him own people at lan parties, funny as hell too to see the look on their face when they get owned by a guy in a wheel chair acting like they expected him to be an easy kill.

How does he move forward and backward? Is he using a keyboard/controller on the other hand for that?

Otherwise, interesting. I think a mouse and keyboard would still win though. Nothing beats setting your mouse to its maximum sensitivity and dragging your mouse in circles on the pad. :p

I have some experience in competitive gaming, this is not worthwhile for competition. The needs of competitive gaming don't always line up with the needs of casual gaming though, and this could be fun. I agree with others though, the movements are too exaggerated. If it could accurately track more subtle movements I would be interested in giving it a try.

Static nightmare. Useless, but quaint.

This is for sword fighting, makes a lot more sense for something like this than FPS.

These tracking controllers for FPS are never going to attract me, I like my shoulder to not freeze up in lactic acid cramps and my joints and ligaments to last a little longer than it would using Kinect etc. for FPS.

^^

Dont forget to mute the sound on that video and go to 1:42 to see the sword action.

You'd look like a complete tool waving your arm around whilst sitting in a chair playing fps games. Not to mention the fact most limp wristed fps teens barely have enough forearm strength to masturbate nevermind keep their arm elevated in the air for 1-6hrs a day :).

@RangerXML I agree with you. Give me a VR headset that has the equivalent resolution (or better) of my eyefinity setup, with a gun and trigger in my hand and something like this and I'd be ready to sign up.

Probably also need to play in servers that would only be with other players with similar set up. Because, if you go up against mouse and keyboarders you'd be destroyed.

I'll play 1V1 with him.

He can used his fancy controller and I'll use my Mouse/Keyboard. Lets see who wins.

As a first-attempt, this is actually pretty good. Movement can be controlled by body movement, your other hand can be used for weapon swaps, jumping, etc.

It might not be better than a mouse/keyboard for experienced gamers, but it has the ability to be just as precise, especially with practice. And it gets your lazy, sedentary selves off the couch for a bit. :)

Better than a mouse? No.

Better than a controller for FPS... maybe..

The game is called sauerbraten. Gameplay is fast/twitch reactions is essential no way you would have a chance with these controls.

However the game is open source, on ZLIB license, adding your own control scheme would be easy. Thats probably why he used it to demonstrate his work.
