ATT: 4G for everybody!!!!

I can't believe this. AT&T late to the game with technology, but the first to ruin it for everyone else. I am glad I jumped to sprint 5 years ago.

AT&T really going in the wrong direction here, how was this even considered a good idea, haha

Lmao yes its the exact same thing tmobile did. But there right to do so. Faster then sprint 4g so why not.

That article was far too biased and harsh though.

AT&T is now calling HSPA+ 4g but only because T-mobile did and then the ITU changed their definition of 4g as well to include HSPA+. So, AT&T has every right to call it 4g because now, thanks to the idiots who caved in to market pressure, HSPA+ is technically 4g.

Also, that article phrased their rollout of LTE to make it seem as if it won't come out until the end of 2013. That is when AT&T expects the LTE roll out to be complete. The first LTE phones, as well as LTE service in a few select market, are going to be happening Q1 of this year, not far behind Verizon at all.

Don't get me wrong, I don't like the idea of companies calling HSPA+ 4g, but don't blame AT&T. T-Mobile did it, AT&T and others called them out on it, then ITU caved to T-Mobile.
It would be a bad business move if AT&T didn't follow suit.

That article itself is crap as everyone has already said AT&T is branding HSPA+ which is a 4G standard. They're not renaming their 3G to 4G. And why are we posting misleading articles like this?

That and AT&T's HSPA+ is by far faster than T-Mobiles even with almost if not more than 3 times the subscribers as T-Mobile.

But didn't T-mobile beat them to the mark by renaming their 3g network 4g first?

If people are stupid enough to not do their home work and buy into this, who cares. No loss to me. If their too stupid to notice, w/e.

Great, now all the dumbasses will be like "ROFLSSSSSSS I'M USING 4G!!!!!! LOLOLOLOLOLOL"

Guess it depends on where you live cause where I live tmobile usually can only deliver Edge not even 3G so ATT it is for me here since it is a TON faster than Tmobile.

what a funny transition. might as well put an update. its funny that also 4g network coverage is widely known. so much for the pressure to get iphone 4. @ least now we know sprint had that netwok coverage all along

even 4G isn't really 4G. at least that's what i read. the speeds to get actual 4G aren't being reached by anyone

AHAHAH that is pretty hilarious.

My EVO on sprint 4G with zero bars gets 2.13mbps down, my friends Iphone 4 with a full 5 bars only manages 1.8 or so. Consistantly.

When im near a tower I can pull 5+mbps. ATT is a fucking joke.

wow, lots of ATT hate in here.

in dense metro areas ATT has better towers, I can pull ~2Mbps in my area(we just got 3G two months ago) if I got into San Diego I can pull ~4Mbps

I get 6+ down in heavy populated cities :(

Edit: On AT&T

This, lol my Evo got 3~ when I had it but my iPhone 4 when i had that can pull a good 4.2 consistently whereas my Droid 2 Global now pulls down a weak ass 1.2. AT&T wasnt the first one to do this so dont bitch on them it was T-mobile who decided it was cute and funny to change their 3.5G HSPA+ to call it 4G because they dont even have plans to go to LTE. AT&T had HSPA+ for quite a while now that and its roll out of LTE is about the same as verizon.

I think it has to do with your distance from the towers on sprint. 4G is pretty spotty in NYC still. In manhattan and the bronx i get at least 6 down, in queens i get anywhere from 3 to none down. I'm getting really pissed at the fact that I have to pay an extra $10 a month when I don't even have 4g in my area. The 3g speeds have also been kinda of laggy lately I am lucky to get 1 down on 3g.

I get 4 Mbit down on ATT at home closer to the city. Where I work farther out only around 1 Mbit. Tmobile would be even worse around here (edge only).

I get great speeds with AT&T in Cincinnati.

Ping leaves something to be desired. All in all a good experience.

Yeah for whatever reason Cincinnati is just WAY overbuilt when it comes to mobile infrastructure.

We have great AT&T HSPA, Sprint WiMax, Verizon LTE, T-Mobile HSPA+. All of the newest tech on all of the networks are here.

I'm not complaining one bit. :D I just find it really odd how great this area is for mobile.

I was just out in LA(Orange County) to visit my mom over Xmas, and quite frankly, the coverage and service level here spanks SoCal. I'm sure it has everything to do with population and terrain.

Jesus that's faster than my home internet....

Maybe I'll try a Verizon switch call for Unlimited, then setup a hotspot.... or can the Captivate do that?

Which current AT&T devices sport HSPA+? I know the iPhone 4 doesn't.

having it enabled will still help non + phones anyhow. They may have removed it, but the max they currently allow via cap is 6 Mb.

We had att but switched to verizon. Sprint, att, and tmobile don't get service at my house. Verizon is 5 bars. I live in a city of 1.5 million people too.

A couple apps allow tethering, and froyo has a native tethering option built in, but it does drain your battery much faster.
