Amazon Ready to Pull the Plug on Illinois

It's funny how every time we have a political article pertaining to one state, we see a bunch of posts complaining about how bad that state is.

So what are the good states? Come on, there are 50 of them...at least one or two must be nice.

CT, CT, CT....CT...CT, Texas (except too damn hot), VT, certain areas of Washington (Seattle), very small areas of California, and Maine.

Yup that's pretty much it.

I see this as another state trying to find ways to collect money during the depression/recession. Instead of cutting back on budgets and increasing efficiency, they find ways to force companies and individuals to hand over their money. Weird we have laws protecting us from indivuals extorting money but what are you gonna do when it's the states that's doing it.

Ugh....next it'll be Newegg getting taxed in IL. Then I'll really be screwed.

It all online retailers. Amazon only one putting up a stink.

Amazon's threats to kill its affiliate program haven't been idle, either; the company has closed the program in Colorado, Rhode Island, and North Carolina thanks to similar laws there.
Amazon won't take shit. Good for them

I live in IL right now and i hate this state. The laws and corruption are making this the least desirable state to live in and politics is a joke.

I think we have you beat out here in California, both in taxes, corruption (well maybe not corruption, you do have Chicago). As for Politics, I think we do better in shear numbers worthless elected officials such as Pelosi, Boxer, Maxine Waters, etc.

At least we have better weather.

Agreed. I wish more companies would stand up to government instead of getting in bed with it.

Could you imaging what would have happend if the tobacco companies would have stopped selling thier products in the states that sued them, instead of working out multi-million dollar settlements?
The states would have lost the tax revenue, and the smokers would have rioted.
The poloticians would have backed off rather than face the angree voters.

(For the record I don't smoke, can't stand being around smoke, and don't understand why anyone would want to smoke.)

Clicked the link and read the story... Didn't know they had already pulled affiliates in CO... Shows how big of an effect it had on me, the end consumer.

The only people that this law really affects are those affiliates...

amazon is the greatest
not sure how come they are still offering great services......... and even prices....
I am hoping it doesn't change...

Just FYI, but this is coming on top of ANOTHER income tax raise that they want to push though. 75% higher income tax rates.

Can not wait to move out of this state.

Yes! Let's drive even MORE jobs out of the damn state you friggin' retards!

And these dumbshits wonder why small-to-medium business if fleeing the state with their tails on fire, hopping over state lines, and erecting giant "Fuck You Illinois" billboards once resettled.

But hey, we exported one of our Politicians to the White House! Why should we of "That State Around Chicago" suffer alone?

Just another thing America will outsource to Canada / Mexico. Why pay sales tax when I can get same TV for a taxless $50 less through Mexico/Canada? Didn't think about it that way did you fucking idiot politician, ya one-track minded retard.... 99% of them are fucking clueless, greedy, one track minded (money for them) fools who don't think things through thoroughly. Especially when it comes to technology..... just a joke sometimes and the totally assbackwards view on things.

I am surprised this guy is not republican doing something like this..... 99 out of 100 Republicans just continually look like ignorant, rich assholes who just don't get how the world operates. Yeah they usually have money, but because they didn't earn it the normal way they don't know the value of a dollar or how things actually happen in global markets. That does not make them smart at all just because they are rich, its only because they have money and power to influence poor, stupid people who wish unrealistically to be rich like their sheepish "leader"

Wrong on all counts. The vast majority of millionaires today (95-90%, depending on the study) made there own money instead of inherited it. 70% of the United State's largest fortunes are less than 17 years old, and were made by entrepreneurs that took huge risks. Google it.

These people are Republicans precisely because they do understand the value of a dollar and how the global markets work. There is a reason Republicans tend to be wealthier - it's not just happenstance. They simply understand economics and wealth better on the whole.

Good for Amazon! When will those who call themselves part of a government realize that it's not their money; it's our money. Time for them to stop trying to steal everything possible from us.

Agreed. I wish more companies would stand up to government instead of getting in bed with it.

Those state governments would have passed a law forcing the company to sell in that state.

Think I'm kidding?

I'm not.

That's the mentality of the power-mad.

<citizen kane clapping gif>

Good for Amazon. I like how they are willing to cut off affiliates in states that try to bully them into collecting sales tax. Most other companies just fold. Losers.

I hope they don't. I like Amazon, and my fiance doesn't want to move because her family is here. I suppose I can just get things shipped to my parent's place in Wisconsin and pick it up when I visit or something...

It all depends. If they have facilities in Illinois they are responsible for collecting sales tax in that state. If they don't they are not. There's no middle ground.

I too served in the military for 3 1/2 years in NY, the only good thing about this state is the Illinois Veterans Grant, thats the only reason im still here, when i graduate in May im looking for a job in another state for sure. My county (Dekalb) is probably the worst in the state when it comes to taking care of the roads, they don't even attempt to plow until it stops snowing 90% of the time, as soon as you get to the county line you can see the difference. :-\
Hell No! Live in McHenry (Huntley) They don't plow streets at ALL!!!!! Huntley sucks... I know... I live there! lol

Another thing... The Illinois Tollway is one of the richest entities in all of North America (No Joke!) Why doesn't the state take more money from that? It's all about, "The Richer get rich, while the rest get fucked sideways"

Same here! ...I went back to school to wait out the recession. (Might as well, right?) Seems all of the money allocated for road maintenance went into installing red light ticket machines.

I was stationed in North Carolina. ...don't really have too much bad to say about NC. It wasn't perfect, but pretty well-rounded overall.

There are no sales taxes at all is some States?? Really?

How do you get funding for schools, road maintenance and other critical services?
I'm in Canada and it's a mandatory 13% on any item you buy (there are some items that are only 7% but still)

Its not inherited by means of businesses/money being directly handed down, but it is inherited by having school paid for, well-connected parents and family members, and generally having a much better starting point. Things in America are set up to keep the rich people rich and the poor people poor, and it's been that way for a long time. It's very rare that you see someone come from a lower-class or middle class family become a millionaire or billionaire.

As far as republicans understanding economics and wealth better, there are plenty of arguments one can make against that, especially since both Democrats and Republicans are both in bed with big business and are fully enjoying the brib-......contributions that they receive.

You want to make campaign contributions illegal? Don't think people should be allowed to do what they want with their money?

I guess I don't really understand. Why would Amazon care that they have to collect taxes for a certain state when they already charge tax in other states?

As far as I'm concerned, Amazon should collect tax in all states or none. I'm in a state they do collect tax and I'm sure we're all envious of those who live in states where they do not.
What state do you live in? Living in California, Amazon is one of the few sites that doesn't collect tax for California. Almost every other site does and it's a pain.

so what happened to interstate commerce being reserved right of the federal government?

so what happened to interstate commerce being reserved right of the federal government?

Everything the government does is legal, no matter what it is.

It's not until its challenged that it can be deemed unconstitutional. A process which can take a very, very long time.

Problem is, Illinois is broke. Solutions for bringing in revenue, are only going to become more grim the longer they keep pushing this shit to the back burner.

Problem there is, the status quo for Springfield has been: Spend as though you've got a bottomless purse, we'll figure things out come fiscal year.

And yet everyone is astonished when that point comes, and they collectively gasp, "We're THAT far in the hole?"

They can keep upping the taxes all they like, this shit won't end until Springfield pulls it's head out of it's collective set of asses.

Oh wait, Satan won't let that happen, he always bitches, "YOU KNOW HOW LONG IT TAKES TO RELIGHT THE PILOT ON THIS THING?!?!?!?!?"

Supposedly the state income tax increase (going from 3% to 5.25%) was going to balance the budget, which is probably why it'll get rammed through....Why Illinois is continuing to be such an anti-business state, is anybody's guess.

Last I had heard, they wanted to institute some sort of silly "hope all you residents kept your receipts for the last 6 years of intarweb purchases LOLOLOOLLOLOL" statute to bring money in....Not so dissimilar from why Amazon is ready to bolt from Illinois if Quinn signs this bill.

So far as the last election, I don't think anybody thought for a moment that we were not going to be fucked regardless of who won the last governor race in IL.

I dislike any kind of sales and import tax. Taxing people for schools, armies and police I can understand, as the government provides those services. What the hell do they provide, so that they think I should pay them for me giving someone else money, for goods and services that another party provides, or to receive my goods I paid for, passing through another parties ports.

If they paid for delivery then I could see the point of it, if they owned the shops I could too. But they don't even do anything to facilitate the transactions at any point, nor do they even encourage the sale. They want money for doing nothing, so I go out of my way to ensure I don't pay them for their greed. Foreign nationals to buy, and shipping items "seconds hand" or "faulty" are always the best way. I love receiving packages of "broken" tax free equipment and parts. The goverment didn't make the item, invent it, ship or give me the money to buy the item, I don't see how they're entitled to a cut. Infact giving them money for doing nothing feels immoral.

It's REALLY complicated. From my understanding, Nevada has no taxes, but the gambling/prostitution subsidizes the loss of sales tax. Florida is the same, but I believe the tourism makes up for everything. Alaska has the oil industry. Delaware attracts big corporations and that makes up for their sales tax. Don't forget that there's alternate fees too. Some states have lower sales tax, but charge higher vehicle/registration fees and other gimmicks. It's really based on a whole, not just one thing.

Keep in mind too that we have tons of tollways and our healthcare isn't free also.

Florida has no income tax, but it has a 7% tax on most goods (except food) and there is a tax on big items like cars, etc. Big taxes on real estate.

I recently found out that Amazon doesn't charge sales tax for purchases in CA. I didn't pay attention before until people on this forum pointed it out for me. I bought a lot of my electronics from Newegg before, but they charge CA residents tax. Now, I'm going to buy a lot more stuff on Amazon and Tiger Direct because these 2 don't charge CA residents sales tax.

All partial:
Schools - Property taxes (and it is included in rent)
Roads - Fuel tax
Others - Open palms to the Feds, or going without. They collect more than $1 for each $1 they pay in Federal taxes.

Rick Perry in Texas also "estimated" a $11B shortfall, it will be $27B (without a state income tax).

for most people it amounts to very very little though....not enough to make a huge deal about

Anyone have links to the history of why Amazon and Tiger Direct don't charge sales tax in CA, and why Newegg does?
