OK so basically I was hoping to get a new 50mm f/1.4 with a bunch of Best Buy gift cards that I got for Christmas. However, I have a D5000, which doesn't have an internal auto-focus motor, so I need an AF-S lens. Best Buy does not carry one of theses lenses.

So pretty much the only lens that I could get using my Best Buy gift cards now is the 35mm f/1.8 AF-S lens. I am interested in this because I want something that can take good low light shots quickly.

Is this something that anyone would recommend, or does no one really use a 35mm? If you do use one, care to share some photos?

While I shoot Canon, I love my 35mm f/1.4. Super sharp wide open, it is by far my favorite prime.

I have the 35mm f/1.8 that I shot with a D90 and love it, it's by far my favorite lens, cheap to boot.

It's crazy fast and really sharp, it's a better fit than a 50mm for the non-full frame bodies like we have.

1.4 and 1.8, yes it does make a difference. I know on the Canon side more people like the 50mm 1.4 instead of the 1.8. Not only because of the different in stop, but the canon 1.4 is a all metal body and the 1.8 is a cheap plastic body. Not sure about the nikon family. Plus 35mm is about a 50mmish on the nikon crop body such as yours.

The Nikon 35mm/f1.8 is a metal mount/plastic body construction. Not quite as bulletproof as all-metal, but still quite solid.

Oh, and there's nothing Nikon-specific about that crop factor - something approximating APS-C is a very common sensor size in dSLRs, including a significant chunk of the canon lineup. ;)

nikkor 35mm /1.8 is a great piece of glass. get it. it's a lot more useful on a crop camera than the 50mm anyway.

very glad you guys didn't post "OH NOOOOOESSS don't get it, its a POS" because I just ordered it last night! Thanks for the input.

Yeah, I think you'll be very happy with this lens! The D5000 uses a crop sensor, so 35mm on it is approximately the same as a 50mm on full-frame. I didn't understand the crop-sensor ratio when I first got my D90 and picked up the 50mm 1.4 right away. The 50/1.4 is a great fast lens which is good for portraiture and a few odd applications, but at 75mm equivalent length on my camera it is just plain awkward most of the time. Makes me want to upgrade to a full-frame body every time I use it. :p

If I'd known before-hand I probably would have gone with 35mm to start with - so I generally recommend the 35mm f/1.8 as a starter lens for crop cameras.
