i7-970 or SB?

Well I had a little problem with my i7-930 over the weekend. It looks like I killed the 930 AND my UD3R. Not currently having a job, I called my loving grandmother and asked her to help me get my comp up and running again. A little explanation may be in order for the story:

My grandparents are very wealthy. My grandfather is the most generous man I have ever met, but also very frugal. He gives enormous amounts to charities, but probably wouldn't replace my i7-930. He can be a very hard man to deal with, and my grandmother has to deal with him. This puts her in a very comical position of having very large bank accounts with her name on them and getting a sense of joy out of pissing off my grandfather by spoiling her kids and grandkids rotten.

When my older 15" Macbook Pro got vandalized, she dragged me to the store against my will and made me look at the Macbook's. When I lingered in front of the 17" a bit longer than the rest, she told the BBY employee, "We'll take the 17." There was no discussion or argument allowed.

So when I call my grandmother looking for some money help with my CPU she asked me how much it would cost, I told her I wasn't sure(I was trying to remember the price for the 950 or whatever the equivalent is to the 930) and she asked, "$2000?" I said that $2000 was way high and that the best CPU available only cost about $1000. So that's how she decided how much my CPU would cost. She wanted me to have the very best and told me to get 'that one'. I decided instead to order the 970(she doesn't have to know I saved her $100 right?) and it got here yesterday.

At that point I was pretty sure it was just the chip, but I took the board and CPU to a local shop to see if they could take a look. They told me it was very likely the board, but were not sure on the CPU. This wasn't a very helpful diagnosis, but I went ahead and ordered an ASUS Sabertooth X58, which should hit my doorstep in a few minutes.

Now I'm wondering if maybe I should hold off on opening boxes and consider returning for Sandy Bridge. I would likely look at the 2600K because I want HT. I also don't know if the 930 is actually dead. If it is in fact working, I could hang on to the Sabertooth and give my little sister an early upgrade and still move to SB.

What would you guys do?!?

yea what are the uses and I am kinda confused as to the whole story. In short you got a new cpu and board and are wanting sb? If so just keep your 1366 sb wouldnt be a big upgrade if one at all

SB is a nice upgrade actually, efficiency wise and feature wise (sata 6Gbps on ich10r ;) just for one...)

Having a X58 and selling it for SB is not a good move though... IMHO X58 is still a very powerful platform. Should have taken the 980X though over the 970 ;)

Getting the i7 970 at 850 ish vs the 999 980x is no point to me.. might as well get the best in that case...

If the i7 970 were half price then yeah I would go for that....

Like I got the i7 970 through the RetailEdge Program.. final cost was 285 CND after taxes and shipping... now that's saving money..

But still pales to getting a Sandy Bridge though...

I'd say if it's still sealed in box and you can do it without pissing anyone off too much return it and get SB. You will get more CPU power for thread limited tasks (like gaming) and about the same CPU power for highly threaded tasks at a much lower cost. You will also be on a new platform rather than a dying platform.

If you can get the BEST, then WTF are you asking for?

Wait for the BEST to come out, and then get the best. Just have patience and wait a few days, :)

Without a doubt sell/return/etc what you have and get Sandybridge. With only a few days away it isn't even about need at this point. This is your rigs way of telling you "upgrade, upgrade, upgrade :D" You know you'll be very pleased having the new tech. :D

You've already got the Sabertooth X58 and the Core i7 970. I'd just use that. It's not really worth grabbing Sandy Bridge if you've got that setup. You get more cores with the Core i7 970 and they overclock fairly well. Look at the Sandy Bridge article. At 4.4GHz the Core i7 980X often beats out Sandy Bridge. X58 has more PCI-Express lanes so I'd just stick with what you have.

I would go for Sandybridge and make my little sister happy with the 930. No doubt your grandmother would like that decision too ;)

It is. You may not get the job you want but day labor or even working at Wendy's is possible. Jobs like that aren't hard to get.

you have no idea what your talking about. he cant work cheap labor because they wouldnt even look at him, he would be over qualified and a flight risk for those said jobs. keep your nuts in your mouth.

I really don't see the point in the back story- except to brag about how you have rich relatives who don't mind throwing money at their unemployed grandson.

If only it was that easy :)

If his family is as rich as he states then they have the connections to get him a job.

Nah, if the man wants a job, he will get a job. No matter what it is. To each his own.

First off, don't be a dickhead. Second there are jobs out there. You just have to get off your lazy ass and start looking. You may not be able to get a job you want or a job you even like. You can however get a job and stop being a fucking parasite to society and your family. If the guy's never done day labor, construction or worked at a Wendy's he's not going to be thought of a "overqualified" or "a flight risk" from those jobs. He'll just have to work as cheaply as immigrants.

You are the one who has no idea what your talking about.

Exactly. Man up and provide for yourself. If your family is rich then there is no reason why you shouldn't be in school getting a degree and figuring out what you want to do with your life. So if you aren't working, be in school. If you aren't in school, get to work.

if you can return the expensive x58 setup and save some money on a SB build then do that...and give your grandmother back her change (if she would accept it). also, i found the back story entertaining.

The 930 is prob not dead, personally I would just replace the board which is the cheapest option.

If your overclocking that 930 SB is a minor upgrade at best.

Lastly guys lighten up a bit, some people just feel the urge to post there life story around a fairly straight forward question.

to clarify, i'm not being sarcastic. i did indeed find the back story entertaining. this is a discussion board, i come here to read stuff (tech info and stories)

Seriously, I'd just return it all and give the money back. First of all, no possession is worth having to feel guilty over. Second of all, you just don't appreciate things in life unless you had to work for them.

Love that post. And it's such a common excuse I hear these days. Sure, some people are turned down for being overqualified, but only in professional level jobs where they expect you to stay for a few years or more. Nobody gets turned from Wendy's for being overqualified.
