Polk PSW505 subwoofer $200 shipped newegg+amazon

no, it doesnt need a new thread
there's been countless commentary on avsforums about this because of people like you
and people who design these products always have to chime in and waste their time about this silly nonsense.

woah there benji! I don't know MrGlobe, but he appears to be a non-elite, not quite-audiophile, or to dare say "average" individual. AVS is excellent, and one with sufficient interest can learn a tremendous amount over a few days reading.
This Polk sub delivers more than most at this price, which seeded this thread. His reference to "starting a new thread" is no doubt due to this topic drifting off-course.

*Bump for 0055's original intent, Polk 300/460W RMS/Peak Powered 12" HT Sub* Still looks to be in-stock, $199 & FS

Haha thank you for adding that to the argument. I'm picturing your expression as you typed it.

... youre saying that a sub "sounds quicker."
Nope... I never said that. I speak merely in terms of physics. ;-)

Back on topic... Quicky unpacked the sub last night and swapped cables from the BassCube 10.

O..M..G!! This little sucka' slams!

With old setup, the Bose woofers produced the majority of bass, and the cube was added just to fill in the sub-40Hz. (Bose woofers rolls off very sharp around 40-45 Hz)

This Polk kicks some serious ass! I cut off the Bose @ 200Hz, and still have more bass than I had with all 3 subs running before. Every storm window in the house is rattling (as was before), but now the kitchen cabinets buzz, the cellar door and bathroom doors buzz if closed. WOW!

Not sure I can keep the Bose woofers active tough. Cancellation factor is much worse than it was with the down-firing 10". Guess I got some experimenting to do this weekend.

BTW, the bass from this Polk is very tight, and very deep. $205 well spent. (I bundled the woofer with a new 25' sub cable, which added like $4.99)

:D

I bit on this one also.... if this one doesn't do it I am going svs for sure... but the user reviews seem positive, except at the avs forum, they don't give it much love, but they are used to much higher end subs there I reckonj.. it's got a good driver and enough power and the right type of cabinet.. 4th order vented I think... I am eager to test it out this weekend.

AVS loves low budget subs just not the ones made by Polk. General rule of thumb is better to go with exclusive sub woofer company.
You don't have to go SVS there a a few in between $200 and $500 price point that are favorites. Lava, Hsu, Ed Design Audio.

I hear ya. I have two Bose AcoustiMass systems, PLUS a Cambridge Soundworks BassCube 10... so 3 subs total.
(yeah dealing with cancellation was a nightmare!)

I have to turn off the cube for movies. It's just too much. Drowns out the dialogue, and muddies the sound effects.

I use the cube strictly for music. The added low end punch rivals that of a well funded nightclub.
I love that "knock the breath out of you" kick in the chest feeling. It makes a party really hop.
Cannot wait to feel the difference from that 75W 10", to this 300W Polk 12" :D

YEE HAWWWW !!
The acoustimass is not a sub, really. It is a "bass module", and only goes down to 50 or 60Hz if I remember correctly. And it goes up to around 200Hz, to match with the little cubes. So it localizes quite a bit, and can be problematic to position. The new Polk you are getting will go MUCH lower for ya!

Of course you are noticing a difference. You are going from overmarketed crap audio equipment to a legitimate audio company. Bose is junk and always will be. Any self-respecting person that cares about audio at all should punch, kick, tear or rend-asunder any Bose products they ever come in contact with.

Now regarding the Polk sub. It is a great sub for the price. It is even better than many other similar offerings that cost about twice as much. However, it cannot compete with subwoofers made by companies that specialize in subwoofers. Some of the companies that come to mind are SVS, HSU, EpiK, Energy, and Velodyne. I respect Polk and Klipsch as budget to mid-range audio companies. They make decent products that I would buy when they go on sale. I would probably not purchase their products at full price. Just my opinion.

Now for all you people around the OKC area who bought one of these, you should let me know and I can demo my new SVS PB12-NSD for you :p

Yeah, that thing made the rental shake a LOT, but my new place just rumbles, since it is much tighter. Watched some DVR material last night and the explosions are so much fun I hate watching with TV speakers.

The slot load was the reason I liked it. No chuffing like everyone complains about with the 10's.

It looks a lot like a smaller version of my definitive which is a good sub (has the exact same slot port on the bottom back), but doesn't have enough power to properly control the 15" driver imo... it's a 325W amp in that one and it can sound good, but also very muddy and boomy... it for sure lacks tightness/control on the low end when it gets loud... I'm hoping the polk does better. It's essentially got the same power but with a smaller driver so I am hoping it's got better control of the driver... mine is sitting at home waiting for me to unbox and install. :)

I did a lot of auditioning when I got it. Eagles "Hell Freezes Over", Independence day's alien weapon scene, and about five more movies, plus a whole bunch of music CD's. It wasn't broken in, but I loved it compared to others I had heard. I understand that for three times the price, I can get more. Hsu was on my short list before I found the 505 on sale, along with some of the other names. That being said, I am more than happy, and now I want to put a smaller sub in for more of the mid bass effect to bridge from the Monitor 60's to the very lowest effects.

well, I got it in and after messing with levels and placement I like it better than any sub I have had on this system so far... it needs to break in more though... at first it didn't sound too good but after playing music for a couple of hours and playing with the LFE strength and the phase switch I it started sounding very good... it did seem to need some breaking in and I think needs a bit more but it's got some balls... good tight and deep bass... we have a big and kind of oddly shaped room so that's not helping anything.. I only have a small spot I can put the sub in so I moved it around in that area a bit, seems to like to be about 6 inches away from the back wall and about 2 feet from the corner.. anyways, going to keep breaking it in... maybe Terminator Salvation... or Sherlock Holmes.. hmmm.

EDIT: wow this sub needed some break in but it does sound very nice now... I was a little worried at first until I got the positioning and phase right.. but it's gets really low and still tight in movies without being loud and boomy which is what I was hoping for...

Congrats to those who got in on this discontinue sub. It was a great deal.

It makes me roll my eyes and shake my head that Crutchfield is selling a wimpier version of this PSW111) for $300.

Yeah - the more this thing breaks in the better it sounds... it can do very subtle deep base without getting too loud but it can also do hard hitting tight 'shake the whole house bass' also and doesn't loose it when gets loud like my definitive did... for the $ spent I am quite happy...

Boys and their toys....

tsk tsk children. When will you learn what is a good subwoofer?

Meet the Epik Dynasty.

yes, there's one as a part of my home theater.

There are only 2 brands that exist on tech forums ...Polk and Klipsch. :D
However in all seriousness, dynasty is discontinued so kinda lame to bring it up as a thread capper tsk tsk.

So whats the point in comparing an $800 sub to the $200 one the thread is about? Not everyone has that kind of cash to spend.

Bit on this sub and the Monitor 40 II and CS2 II speakers when Newegg had them all on sale along with an Onkyo TX-SR608 receiver and am really enjoying them! They replaced a Logitech Z-5500 speaker system and there's really no comparison.

Actually, it was a $1200 sub.
The point is, once you start becoming a basshead, this is where it progresses to. :D
