MicroCenter Sandy Bridge Launch Prices in B&M store only

Ease of overclocking, lower power consumption, wanting to go more towards lower budget/higher return set-ups -- lots of reasons I suppose. Same reason guys gave up Q9550's for I7's?

People who already have an i7 may upgrade to LGA 2011...not LGA 1155 imo.

I have a micro center that is literally 5 minutes from my office, and there is a post office accross the street from my office as well.

I would be willing to help anyone out who would like to investigate getting one. I am in Houston, TX.

Tax Rate is 8.25%
Paypal is 2.9% (Unless you wanted to gift it)
Shipping would be what $15?

So the 279.99 one would be $327.91.

If that is worth it to anyone let me know.

MC has done it again. These will be the launch prices for Sandy Bridge CPUs.

Core i5 2400 $149.99
Core i5 2500K $179.99
Core i7 2600 $249.99
Core i7 2600k $279.99

Though not official it's been confirmed by some members at OCN so maybe more can confirm later. I'm probably gonna be there this weekend. :D

One question: If I use SB mainly for gaming then does it make any sense to get the 2600K over 2500K? $100 worth the extra cache and HT?

YES, they do it again!!

Looks like I am going to be a MicroCenter on 01/9 this Sunday!

Going to a big LAN on the 8th! I guess this will be my last ride on the trusty c2quad before heading to MC

Well, if you factor in the tax cost, the price from MC isn't exactly as amazing as you might think, it would be about $308 for me here. Still better than what Newegg will have, but probably not worth the 50 min drive it would take me to get there personally.

Luckily the Microcenter in NJ only has 3.5% sales tax because it is in an "Urban Enterprise Zone" aka Paterson :)

I would love one reading how great these things OC. But I can't justify spending that kind of money without knowing what socket 2011 performance will be like. I hate these reverse launches. Wish they would have come out with the high end first.

279+ Tax+ Gas Isn't really that great here in MI. Would end up being close to MSRP which i'm sure you will be able to get at the egg, prolly with free ship once supplies are steady.

WHY are people who currently have i7 CPUs still planning to buy Sandybridge?

As someone mentioned below your post, there's a few reasons, but I am one of those who is going from an i7 920 to a Sandy Bridge system. I'm currently running an mATX system, and heat has always been a problem due to the X58 and the 920. Currently it seems either the motherboard of the IMC (doubtful) on the processor has a problem, because while the system can sometimes recognize the full amount of memory, when it tries to address one of the three memory channels the system crashes/hangs for awhile. Memtest hangs when attempting to test the suspected banks at times.

Ultimately, given that problem that's on-going and the heat issues, I've decided to re-build around (hopefully) the 2600S, since we're talking a 50% drop in power consumption for the processor while also featuring a much cooler-running chipset.

On that note, I'm a little disheartened to see no i7 2600s's appearing in ads/etc. The original chart with models and release dates from several months back showed it shipping at the same time as the 2600 and 2600K, but I haven't heard anything more about it. :(

Why Sandy Bridge you ask? If some of the X58 guys even think about upgrade to SB then there's absolutely no reason why you don't go with SB if you're about to build a new system or you're still on such older systems like C2Q or whatever AMD systems.

Why?

Given that a new SB CPU/mobo will set me back about $500 and that I can sell my 4.2GHz 920 DO and Classified for roughly the same, why not? At worst, I may end up paying $100 for the move - and for that $100 (maybe $0) I will get USB 3.0 support, SATA3 ports, lower power consumption and the opportunity to bump my OC to somewhere near 5.0GHz. I have a shiny new Crucial C300 256GB SSD begging for a SATA 6.0Gbps port that my Classified doesn't have. So I'll have more features and better performance for very little cost (if any).

And when the higher end parts come out at the end of the year, I'll do it again - for very little cost at that time as well. So why not?

is the ASUS P8P67 1155 ATX a good board. i have a MC 25 minutes away. thinking about sunday picking up 2500k or 2600k, that asus mobo and 8gb of ddr3. to replace my p35 with q6600.

edit: just seen hardocp did a review of the board. at that price from MC it will be hard to beat.

There are a few games that use 4 threads out now, but not very effectively, lots more head room to grow into. 8 threads is still massive overkill for most things and will be for a long time. Software will transition much more slowly to complex multi threading then it did to new instructions like SSE2, which took 3-5 years, and that was pretty fast by historical standards.

A 4.5-5Ghz i5 2500K will probably be as good as you could possibly need for gaming for a long time. Looking at how long a dual core ~3Ghz C2D has been viable I'd say at least 3 years, maybe longer.

Tee hee, he said Massive Overkill :D

I was kind of wondering that too...

Kind of in the same boat as not really wanting to spend the money on a 6950/6970 when I have a 5870 that more than gets the job done. With an i7-920 OC'd @ 3.8GHz, I'm not really getting the vibe that the additional performance would validate the cost...

I agree.

I'm thinking of getting just the 2500k and the Asus P67 since I'm not really sold on the eVGA Classified design then save up and wait for 2011.
Is the OC capability of 2500K as good as 2600K and the Asus P8P67 Deluxe worth over the regular P8P67?

Though, with all this out now, my next full on build is taking a diabolically awesome shape...

Glad I have a microcenter less than an hour away from me. Sure after gas and taxes it will be about the same price as the egg.

But no waiting!

I'm slightly worried about the motherboard though. They only have 3 motherboards listed on their site as available on the 9th. I'm hoping they'll have a better selection than that. I'd hate to have to stop by frys on the way home :)

i Live in GA so for me it would come out to be

$279.99 + 6% Tax = $296.80 and about $5 in gas (round trip) which would come out to be about $302
STILL much better than paying full retail price of $317+$19.02 tax + shipping would be close to $350ish

No one knows how many they'll have in stock. Maybe just a handful but then they've got you in store so you're bound to buy more shit.

I don't have any microcenter near me unfortunately. The pricing in this thread probably gives a good indication of the general neighborhood that the cpus will be priced at. I'm building a gaming rig for a friend and have been waiting on the sandy bridges for that build. Hopefully they will show up on egg and/or tigerdirect soon.

Regarding the usefulness of multi-core.. Here is some food for thought. As far as I know.......

-If you are doing compression/decompression that supports mutli core, more cores is obviously much faster . Raring/unraring anything.. and decompressing game installs, game maps, patches/updates/newcontent etc which utilize the cores. This factor alone makes it worth it to me.

-If you multitask a lot, like running dreamweaver, photoshop, and a file manager, chat apps, the OS itself ,mail client, a multi-tab web browser (with multimedia plugins running) , your lightweight av (avast?) and perhaps software firewall (comodo?), streaming music to a player, 3rd party game chat app running, etc etc.. the more horsepower (and to a degree ram) the better in my opinion. Of course you can close a lot of apps when you are just gaming. I tend to be an ALT-tab or multi-monitor user though myself, so I like to keep several other tasks running.

- The better the games are coded (and perhaps patched along the way) for multi-core, the better off multiple core users should be.
- Some people like to run more than one instance of a game (like running two accounts on WoW).
-I've heard some physx code/features can run in software mode that supports mutli-core. Whether thats true or not, or desirable (maybe to ati users) - I don't know. :b
-HD movie playback using ati cards (no CUDA), uses less of your overall cpu resources if you have more resources (cores) to spare, if you get my meaning.
-Obviously if you are doing video work and/or 3d graphics work (rendering or even remuxing), more cores is better.

Thats just my opinion. I don't upgrade my cpu very often so for me I'd rather spend more on the cpu during an upgrade, and have a more all-around use computer - especially at these kind of prices. I upgrade my gpu probably 3 times (or more) before I upgrade my cpu. so thats different.

I wouldn't bet on that, MC was selling the i7-920 instore at $199 when all the other online venders has it at $275-$280.

Aw I don't see the ASRock motherboards. I'll decide a little closer on what motherboard I'll get

WHY are people who currently have i7 CPUs still planning to buy Sandybridge?

Because we Can,
Because we have to,
Because we can't control ourselves.
But most of all because we are..(wait for it)...........................................................

damn. well I'll shop around for the best deal I can find for this dude regardless this month. I still prefer more cores.. for those w/microcenter at a cheaper price point would be even more-so.

I have a Q6600 w/ 5870 so I think I'll wait until the next release.

I was informed that there will be more than just those three. I was lead to believe that they had an MSI board, and I saw with my own eyes the "Pro" version of the Asus board on the cart that was not supposed to be on the floor. They only list the vanilla board, and the Deluxe on their website.

Can someone tell me how Microcenter can sell so cheap?
What's their strategy?

It's a common sales practice whereby the retailer lures you into the store with one very good deal in the hope that you'll buy other (higher margin) items while you're there.

That 2500K looks real tempting. I'll probably wait for a future sales event, by that time other motherboards will have been released.

What's their strategy?
They hope that at the same time you'll also pick up a motherboard, some ram, maybe an SSD drive, a few fans, a videocard or two, a power supply, and a few packs of gum on the way out ;)

Can you guys send us one of those Microcenter stores to Toronto? Please k thnx. :D

I can help anyone who needs one. I have a Microcenter very close to me and I can buy and ship the product to you. I would require some extra money for gas and my time. I will be buying one for my friend either Monday or Tuesday. PM me if you are interested.

This offer still stands.

So how much extra gas and time does it require if you're already going there to pick one up for your friend?

You do realize that the time I will spend waiting in line, the fact that I will have to bring multiple people for the limit per customer rules they have, the time to go to the post office to ship the products, etc.

he would also have to package and ship the product out. it's nice of him to offer, no need to shit on someone's goodwill.

Thank you, sir.

I can't believe I'm driving into boston on my day off for the 2500K. Just ordered 2x4GB Gskill kit from newegg for a friday arrival. Was really hoping the Asrock Extreme4 would be available ><
Edit: anyone want to buy a Q9550? :p
