[Requiring therapy] Broke down and got a Macbook Air... I feel so dirty

And, I've found not being to maximize windows pretty stupid, even though Apple fanboys will say that maximizing things is a stupid Windows-era idea (goto: Macrumors).

A little late to this thread, but if you want to maximize, there's a few options.

One is Cinch, it works similar to Snap in Windows 7.

http://www.irradiatedsoftware.com/cinch

Another is Size Up also from irradiated software, I prefer it to Cinch just because I can define key commands to size windows, and define the size of the windows for each key command.

The last one that I use is Nukit. It can be configured so that if you right click or control click on the green button in a window it actually maximizes it. The left click can still be used to fit content to the window.

IMO all of them are worth checking out, and frequently go on sale. I use Nukit and SizeUp frequently, but mainly SizeUp for window management.

Anyway enjoy your MBA, they're great machines.

Congratulations on your new Air! Don't feel dirty...that Windows notebook next to your Air is what made me cringe :p

Seriously though I have the 13" Air and bought it to replace my aging MacBook Pro. I am completely happy with the Air and don't miss any of the things I had in my MBP like the optical drive or ethernet port. It is without a doubt the best notebook I've owned and used. I still have a Windows desktop (for games) but other than that I would never even consider a machine that wasn't running OS X, especially a notebook. I haven't had a Windows notebook in years.

Once you get used to the ins and outs of the OS (takes a few weeks to months depending on how frequently you use the machine to get accustomed to everything) I'm sure you'll be glad you gave OS X a fair shake. The speed at which I can get things done on my OS X notebook compared to when I'm on my Windows 7 box makes having a Mac the obvious choice for me.

Love my Air... And its by far the best gaming ultra portable Ive owned. Ive been a Mac/Windows guy since there was a Mac and a Windows (Mac since the 512 in 1987 and Windows since Win 3.0), so there was no angst involved in buying the Air :)

That said, I see pretty much no benefit at all in OSX vs Windows and havent since Windows XP (which basically means since day 1 :) ). I do see big advantages in Windows vs OSX on a laptop though - mainly the out of box flexibility you get with power management and display settings - but of course usability is a subjective thing and for *most* OS capability gaps on either side there are always 3rd party tools. Cant really go wrong with either OS for 80+% of use cases.

Similar to these is Divvy, which also allows keyboard shortcuts and a nice GUI.

Originally it was OSX doesn't do anything better, but the terminal is a clear case in which that's both untrue as well clearly demonstrative that Apple hasn't "forgotten" it's Unix roots, which is why I chose it as an example. I had no idea what he does for a living and that wasn't his original argument anyway. Since he brought up which modern IDE one might be concerned about in OSX, something that Windows simply can *not* do in any shape or form would be Xcode. And while he might not care about it, that's certainly one that is simply ridiculous to ignore.

THIS! I use the terminal so much. I've got bash scripts that I wrote for linux that I've implemented into OSX. I can't imagine using a Windows machine again and not having a full fledged terminal.

I've kinda forgotten how to use a Windows computer after being away from Windows for the entire holidays; keep pressing ALT+[key] and shit like that. I use Magazines as my case - just slip the MBA in the middle and go; I'm guessing most Apple people with their hard shells + protective covers + bags + bubble wrap would be screaming sacrilege (which reminds of that female tool who colorwared her MB hot pink and slapped a hard shell cover on it. Are there laws against assault on debaucheries of products?).

Battery life does suck though... using just Chrome + Flashblock extension I get probably just 3-5 hours stalking Slickdeals and non-video sites. And goddamn... programs in OSX crash more often than Richmond drivers in Canada get into wrecks. Granted the OS doesn't crash which is what Mac fanboys use against Windows users, but holy fkin' shit, I swear practically all my programs Apple or 3rd party have crashed before, and they do so frequently (right now dealing with Madballs not wanting to launch). At least force quit is instant, vs. the agony of ctrl-alt-del.

I've got no love for the 13" MBA, and definitely wouldn't have gotten a Mac if the 11" didn't exist. For me at least, at 13" things become much less mobile (case in point: I like the size of magazines) and there are a lot more options out there as well. So at 13", with the size being less portable already, I would just go "all out" and get an Acer 3820TG with an i3/i5 + 5650. But.. "less portable" wasn't on my agenda (I AM coming from a 13"..) and the MBA was and still is the only thing out there that satisfies my criteria (10" too small, 13" too big).

Now I miss OSX's "universal" menu bar at the top of the screen for all programs; played with my Windows after a month of OSXing and was scrambling to find the menus.

Oh, the joys of getting used to something. Just don't mention Cut + Paste... or lack thereof.

That's odd with the program crashing lowteckh, any more details on them? Once in a blue moon I'll get a program lock-crash (and almost all of them are using Excel/Powerpoint, turns out Excel doesn't like giant datasets, who knew!?).

Of course locks are more common-or-less common based on an individual machine, but if it's 1/2 as frequent as you are saying, it's very unusual. And 'very unusual' makes me think there's something not quite right.

Battery life, you could probably stretch out by turning things off that you don't use. E.g. bluetooth is always on by default, but most people don't use it all that much. Disabling it helps some, changing powersettings, etc. My blackbook is 5ish hours with default settings, but if I turn it on "extended life" by tweaking settings, I can get over 7.

Adobe's apps are a typical culprit, Photoshop in particular. It's unfortunate because they used to be quite stable on the Mac, but no longer.

Apps specifically designed for OS X (ones that leverage quite a bit of Cocoa), I've found, rarely crash. If they're crashing frequently, something's definitely up.

I've had my MBP for just the weekend and already bash + textmate is the most gorgeous combo I have ever used. Textmate is well worth a purchase.

Odd, is this a more recent (CS4/CS5) problem? I'm still using CS3 for $$$ reasons, but was about to upgrade to CS5 with the new MBP I was going to order soon. (Don't need it yet, reason for upgrading is still 4ish months away, figured I'd wait and see what came up, and the money'll sit in the account just fine).

CS5 has really put apple in a bind. It's really too bad they didn't want to use NVidia cards for their new Mac Pros. Premiere Pro and CUDA support is now light-years ahead of Final Cut in rendering capability. Who knows, NVidia may still see the light of day in an Apple workstation, though if you are REALLY concerned about video editing, a laptop shouldn't even be considered. Photoshop, your definitely OK with though.

Though with crashes, there is always a culprit, and always a fix. But until someone really hammers down the exact cause, you'll be doing lots of figuring and testing. It's like Adobe is trying to give Windows a much needed boost in the media workfield, and in terms of video editing, they are succeeding. If you can hold off a couple months, you never know what Apple has up their sleeve to combat Adobe. It really just takes one person to say, "Hey, let's give customers an NVidia option!" Every day someone doesn't make that decision, a couple more switch to Windows just to use Premiere Pro with MPE.

I just about threw the Mac out the window. Selected everything in a folder, double clicked a single item and it was like diarrhea happening on screen. The people looking (whom I previously touted the device to) were pretty much "ROFLWTF that's retarded, Mac is dumb". I was in total agreement.

I swear, some of the shit that Apple shoves in its OS is just to serve it's "Think Different" motto and nothing more. It's like "We gotta be different, just because. We'll make it different even if the decision is seemingly nonsensical, just because." Enter key to rename stuff, double click opens everything selected, cut paste (what!?), what else... There's making things different, then there's making things unrecognizable. Isn't the point to drag Windows users away from their OSes? Cuz I definitely just turned everyone away with that little stint. "Macs just work", but really and especially if you're coming from Windows (which would be... everyone), they definitely don't just "work". 1 month later, still finding out quirks and things that just make me go WTF, why!?

Angry rant out.

You selected everything and then clicked on an icon and everything started to open...and this is OSX' fault how?

If you want to open a single thing why select everything?
More importantly, how do you propose someone would open all if it doesn't make sense to you that selecting all would lead to opening them all?

Incidentally, if you click on an icon it doesn't rename. You have to click on the name to rename it...which seems logical to me :/

Have you ever used a Windows machine? From the looks of it definitely not.

So you have the basic human functions that enable you to whine, but you aren't intelligent enough to describe a better way to get what you want? That's childish.

Exactly, PEBCAK. This is like the flipped around version of the ignorant Mactard complaining about Steam in that horrible video on Youtube.

That macbook air is sexy...but i think i'll save 600 bucks and wait for AMD Fusion. Having dx11 and Flash will be a plus, but really the ssd is the one thing the mac has going for it.

What, not obvious enough? I'm in the middle of transitioning between operating systems/using 2 different OSes (well, a little bit of Ubuntu as well for XBMC) so I'm not allowed to "whine" about shit I encounter? Please, just go shove your head back up Job's behind since it seems only previous Mac users are entitled to use Macs.

Even Linux uses "enter" to open up crap, OSX is what, only regulated to spacebar or double clicking? Linux isn't out to grab market share; OSX is. And guess what, Apple and OSX are gonna have to be dealing with Windows users if they want that share of pie. Making things more accessible and universal is bad? Maybe you'd like it if every car manufacturer had their own gas pedal placements.

Well the MBAir's got flash (Chrome + flashblock) on demand. Nothing is gonna come close to the MBA's form factor though..

Command+O. In column view, you can also use the right arrow key. Spacebar opens QuickLook. Read the documentation.

Mac OS is not Windows. If you want to use Windows shortcuts to perform every task, use Windows.

Apparently your parents should have started you out on one of these instead of a MBA
