HBO The wire Complete series $75 shipped

this is a damn fine deal. The wire is one of the best drama's I've ever seen (just finished watching the series again earlier this year)

I may have to watch this again from beginning, one of the best.

I'm glad to know that i'm not alone in the whole "The Wire" is the greatest show ever debate

It is being shown in HD on direcTV's 101 network, maybe that means BluRay is in the future? If so wait for that, or rewatch in HD on 101network if you have it :)

please tell me it's in a 16:9 format.

The dvd's (through netflix at least) are all 4:3

I'm not sure if I should watch this. I walk around the streets of Baltimore alone scared enough as it is.

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit, i might have to get this.

holy christ, i was waiting for someone to say this, LOL

I kinda wanna get the whole set, I'm hoping for Blu Ray . . . . .

It's the fucking best series of all time, bar none. It just gets overlooked because it's about the struggles of the inner city and it has a predominant minority cast.

Do NOT let that fool you, every single actor/actress in this show can act, the story is very well written and the presentation is off the charts.

Where's the boy String, where's Wallace?

Man I haven't heard anything more poignant than that in all my years of watching TV shows. I swear that every now and then as days go by, I think of that line for some reason, randomly. Every time I think about The Wire, it's the first thing that comes to mind. Such a memorable ending to Season One.

haha yeah that is a great quote, Im always thinking about that and saying the 2nd part of that quote haha

and yes, on the 101 network it is in HD 16:9 format, they are currently showing season 2

Fuck it, i'm buying it, if you buy it, make sure you use the commissioned link at the top.

edit: Just ordered it, i'm gonna probably end up watching it all over the course of the next month, God help me . . . lol

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh

Didn't realize it was a [H] commissioned link. I thought you were saying the OP had used his own commission link and I was like "why would I use that..."

Fake-hd unfortunately. It wasn't shot in 16:9 or hd. Hopefully they go to blu-ray for a better encode though, the dvd encodes were not the best.

Not sure what the author of that article was watching but on my 101HD network it is clearly HD, not stretchovision. Perhaps it is not the highest IQ but far superior to the DVDs that I have, playing in my oppo upconverting dvd player. Perhaps he was watching the 101 network in SD, stretched..

I remember reading awhile ago that it was indeed never intended to be presented in HD or in WS, and that it was an artistic choice "to preserve the feel of old cop dramas" or something. Anything you've seen rebroadcast would just have been upscaled from SD, maybe ?

There may be a blu release someday, but, I'd be surprised (and thrilled) if it was in true HD/WS.

EDIT: Found this, Inside HBOs The Wire, scroll down to the last 4 paragraphs.

This is still a good deal even though there isn't really a HD version of it. Warning: if you watch The Wire any other cop show is going to seem mighty lame in comparison.

shiiiiiiiiit lol, every since this show anytime I hear someone say that word I always think of this show and how that guy stretched it out, so hilarious in a drama show in a good way.

This show is easily one of, if not THE best crime/drama shows. Mainly because of just show character driven it was. It wasn't your clear cut "good guys, bad guys." The show focused on the characters, and you could actually find yourself liking some of the so called "Criminals/low lifes" on the show while finding some of the cops being hypocritical.

it's like what TBS did with seinfeld.. seinfeld wasn't filmed in 16:9 widescreen format but in 4x3 the standard television size at the time. Even though it was filmed in 4x3 format the 35mm film 'resolution' is much higher than 1080p, allowing it to be cropped to 16:9 1080i/p whatever
This is not stretchovision, where a SD source is stretched to fill the screen resulting in stretched faces etc. in other words, the aspect ratio is correct, just not what was intended when filming, as top and bottom portions of the film negative are cropped off.

The Wire on 101HD is definitely not stretched, but it is possibly a studio upconversion from the dvd masters, with cropping of top and bottom sections. It looks damn good, but I doubt direcTV went through the trouble of remastering the original film negatives to 16:9, although this was done with seinfeld. (not sure if TBS remastered or another studio)

I prefer the 16:9 format, and hope when seinfeld and the wire do make it to bluray, studios offer a choice of widescreen OR 4x3 1080p box sets
