Is it just me or did black ops single player suck?

Call of Duty Black Ops multiplayer runs well enough on my machine. Or I thought it did until I went back and tried Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 just to see it in Eyefinity glory. And don't get me wrong, it runs well enough on my machine to be enjoyable, but it doesn't run as smoothly as other Call of Duty titles do on the same system using the same settings. The single player runs fairly well now compared to the game on launch day. The patches have been helping little by little.

i didn't even bother playing the single player mode, went straight to online lol.

Hmms i guess i will have to fire it up to see what everyone is talking about. Single player on all first person shooter games is pretty dull though, Game makers make the missions to easy even on hard.

Single player was dire; it felt like nobody had play-tested it. I could come up with dozens of examples but I'm not even going to waste my proverbial breath on it. In comparison, the previous title - which was clearly made by a different company - had an excellent single player campaign, with great pacing, set pieces, clear objectives and a magnificent Hans Zimmer soundtrack.

SAY WHAAAAAA

It was atrocious, every few seconds explosions out of nowhere, bullets flying every which way, screen shaking all the time for no reason, NPC's keep getting in the way and are useless. There was buncha times they would just stand next to the enemy and look around pretending to be doing shite! WTF! It was worse than a michael bay movie

i'm only about 2/3 of the way through Black Ops, so take my opinion for what it's worth. i'm not really into it and i have very little desire to finish. i'm hoping the remaining 1/3 picks up a bit. in my opinion Treyarch's SP campaigns are not nearly as engrossing as Infinity Ward's. i still haven't finished World at War's SP campaign. to me Infinity Ward are masters of singleplayer gameplay. I rank the COD singleplayer campaigns like this, from best to worst:

1) COD4 - hands down my favorite COD game
2) MW2 - incoherent story, but a lot of incoherent fun
3) COD2 - fun SP and i was addicted to the MP
4) COD - my memory of this one is fading, played it once-through back at release
5) World at War
6) Black Ops

maybe Black Ops will move up my list once i finish it.

I forced myself to finish the BLOPS campaign just so I could FRAPS the shittiness in its entirety. There was nothing compelling to it, I felt the same.

Crappy graphics? Better than all the other CoD games to date on PC.

I find this arguable. The graphics are the same if not worse then MW2 in many aspects, at least in my opinion. I play both as I have some friends who don't have BO and I find that if I have been playing BO for a while and open up MW2 the graphics look really good to me and I think how much better the light maps are then in BO. The reverse never happens, I don't think I have ever openened up BO after playing a bunch of MW2 and thought it looked better.

The sounds on the weapons in BO are also terrible compared to MW2.

I thought both MW2 and Black OPs had rediculous single players. Both were equally rediculous, like something you would get out of michael bay's wet dream. I liked the MW and earlier compaigns.

Fair enough. MW1 is still my favourite game for sure out of the CoD series.

you bought a Treyarch game, why is everyone so surprised?

I think I'm more surprised that there are actually as many posters defending it as there is. Then again, if you buy something you're much more likely to rationalize your purchase and defend it. Just look at all the Halo fanbois around the world! ;)

Dicks, dicks, everywhere: DICKS. I thought it sucked, too.

I just went back and played some Spec-Ops in MW2, it does seem to look better. I think there is a huge difference in the styles used by Treyarch and Infinity Ward which are largely responsible. The main thing is though that everything in Black Ops is pretty much grey and brown. The Infinity Ward games are just far more colorful. Everything's a bombed out shit hole in Black Ops. You have a lot of nice urban areas in Modern Warfare 2. There are parts of Black Ops which look outstanding which I posted in one of the many Black Ops threads. It can look as good as MW2, but the trade offs for performance each company makes are different. The colors and presentation of the Infinity Ward games are what make them stand out compared to their Treyarch counterparts.

Obviously you haven't played any other Call of Duty games. The story was great, I liked the almost sci-fi premise. It had a couple of plot twists to keep it interesting. Some of the run and gun does get a little old, but that's pretty much what Call of Duty games are. The story and inclusion of playable non-combat story sequences made up for the lack of more suspenseful stealth sequences. The Chernobyl sequence in the original Modern Warfare is still at the top of the list as the best Call of Duty level to date.

And the zombie mode's inclusion of JFK and his quotes is pretty epic. :D
That Chernobyl level was so epic. best level in any game i have ever played.

IMO,
BO has the better MP.
MW2 has the better SP.

I think most PC Gamers have a very bitter taste towards MW2 because of Activision/IW's betrayal/lies over dedicated servers and it twists their perception of MW2's SP, which was actually quite epic in scope.

THIS

BO caught so much shit from MW2. its really unfair because the games are not similiar at all. I also agree that BO has a better MP. The single player was decent but nothing special. But really Who the hell buys any COD game for the single player.

Ohh and Zombies in BO is worth the price of the game by itself.

But really Who the hell buys any COD game for the single player.

COD 1,2 & 4 were good SP experiences and precisely why I bought them in the first place. Sure, MP was fun, but I never got into it hardcore. I think COD4 was the first one where MP was insanely popular, due to the new leveling & unlock system.

Call of Duty 4 had a good single player experience albeit a short one.

ive had the game since day one, and i havnt even tried single player once yet so i cant comment or really give my opinion of it.

i dont usually play single player fps's the AI is usually horrid so i cant get into them unless they throw some sort of RPG element into it.

Wow, is it just me, or are [H] members some of the Call-of-Duty-hating-est folks ever? :p

I find it interesting the high degree of polarization between Black Ops and MW (1 or 2) fans. This leads me to believe that peoples' opinions to the games are colored by non gameplay-related factors like lack of dedicated servers or "betrayal" form IW etc. I.e, "Black Ops has dedicated servers so I like it better and therefore everything about it is superior to MW."

I tend to judge games not by the behavior of the development studio or how user interface issues (like matchmaking) are handled, but rather by how I feel when I am in the virtual world looking out through the eyes of my character. And from this standpoint, I can say that I like MW 1 and 2 much better than WaW and BLOPS. The first CoD I played was World at War, and at the time I felt like it was pretty good. Then I experienced Modern Warfare, and I could see the difference between Treyarch and Infinity Ward. From that point there was no going back for me.

I agree with the OP that BLOPS single-player was nothing to write home about. There were a few cool moments, but overall I found it too easy/boring/over-the-top rediculous. Personally I found the MW games to me much more fun, and as others have mentioned, I identified with the characters much more.

As far as multiplayer is concerned, my opinion is based soley on my actual experience with the gameplay, and not the issue of dedicated servers or anything else. With that said, I like MW2 much better than BLOPS. I love the feel/look of the weapons in MW2, and the movement just has a very precise/snappy feel to it. Black Ops on the other hand I feel like I am constantly slogging through mud all the time, with the precision and quickness to match. This was particularly evident to me when I got on MW2 last weekend after getting fed up with Ops; it was like the difference between night and day. As far as visuals are concerned, I would say that MW2 is ahead of BLOPS in that area as well. It could be that Ops is just in need of PC optimization, but right now to my sense in comparison to MW2, Black Ops both looks worse and runs worse on my machine.

Just my $0.02 :)

It's always the case with super popular games. You have those who will simply hate something simply because it's popular without knowing anything about it or without having played it. It's that way with World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, Battlefield, and just about anything else you can think of. Some people hate a game just because it came from EA or Activision. Then of course if it came from Blizzard it's automatically supposed to be great or something like that.

So the Call of Duty hatred isn't really unusual. I think the bulk of people out there really enjoy the series even if they have some complaints about it. I know I certainly do.

I thought the SP campaign in Black Ops was pretty decent. It was basically what I would expect from the Call of Duty series, and it didn't disappoint me. The Call of Duty series have always been my favorite First Person Shooter, but with Black Ops in multiplayer, I have to turn my settings down quite a bit. That irked me since I just built a new rig and was getting 30 FPS, but now the game is running smoothly and I'm happy with it.
