It makes me envious to see that PS3 gamers have GT5 and Xbox 360 players have Forza Motorsport 3. Are there any 'masterpiece' racing games for the PC?

I am not sure about masterpiece PC racing games, but Dirt 2 with all the details cranked up is amazing to view and lots of fun to play. Play it in eyefinity mode and there is nothing else like it and no console can replicate the experience.

ok, I may look into that. The new NFS will also have to suffice. I'm tempted to purchase a PS3 just for GT5. It's a shame that this genre is being neglected for the PC.

The PS3 also makes for a great bluray player and has some other decent exclusives, GoW and Uncharted come to mind. I generally prefer racing games on a console so I can use the bigger screen (my tv is 46" and pc monitor is 27") and couch seating...

(I havent played a racing game on PC in triple monitor configs, fwiw)

Dirt 2 is a fun game but the menus are a total turn-off for me. Well, lack of thereof. I don't know if Dirt 2 is on consoles, but it certainly seems to be... The interface just plain sucks. Wish they had changed it up a bit.

How is GRID? Same bs menu issues, right?

I'm not too picky but really... GT5 showed that PC menus work great on consoles, why do developers in general have to dumb down everything soooo much???

GRID is good. Also if you want a simulator type game, GTR Evolution will fit the bill.

Only thing is though PC racing games don't have any customizable cars. Your pretty much stuck with just changing the paint job.

I'm in the same boat with you OP. I think I'll get a PS3.

Need For Speed: Shift is about as close to GT5 as you are going to get on the PC at the moment. Decent game, good graphics, but it's not without it's drawbacks. Still enjoyable. Wait till around Christmas though, and it will probably go on sale (either at Steam or Ea Store).

Gears of War is a 360 exclusive. Maybe you are thinking of Resistance? Unless you mean God of War, in which case I'm just an asshole easily confused by abbreviations :p

I think iRacing is probably the best showing the PC platform has for driving. It's a bit of a niche product but it's unrivaled and boundary-pushing in what it does.

I'm currently waiting for Test Drive Unlimited 2

I'm not sure if you consider TDU a masterpiece, heh, but although its no hardcore simulation, I don't think GT5 is either so its comparable IMO.

I've enjoyed TDU a lot, and I'm really looking forward to TDU2

The menu's in Grid are similar but less irritating, I think. I really like both games, though I am not a racing game expert by any means.

And I haven't seen the newest in the trio of "Ego engine" games from Codemasters, F1 2010 is also supposed to be excellent. Though I'm guessing it has the same wonky menus.

Gears of war was released for PC although it was a rather crappy port witha lot of bugs. Gears of war 2 is an exlusive though.

As to racing games, Dirt 2 is great but I have not found anything like forza or GT5 on the PC.

which is a shame.

thanks for all the suggestions guys. I'm going to check out NFS: Shift as that seems to replicate the type of racing game I like best. In all honestly, I may sell this system, buy another quad-core laptop with half of the proceeds, and put the remaining towards a 42" + PS3 combo. I used to game on the PC a lot but I can't see myself getting back into it for some reason.

Masterpiece how? There are a few super realistic racing sims that are for the PC only, but they are by independent developers and, in some cases, just one or two people. iRacing, Live For Speed, rFactor, etc. There's also the GTR series made by the people who later did NFS: Shift.

I rather like the LFS demo but I'm not paying $50 for a game with 3 tracks and 10 cars. F1 2010 is good if you like F1 racing, but I can't stand Codemasters stupid menu system they feel they need to use in every game. Just kill the ego engine already.

Your short changing yourself of a good game because of menus? F1 2010 is a very well done game menus aside. Just buy the game. You don't play menus dude. I'm sure you'll live.

Actually Live For Speed S2 has 20 cars and 7 maps which have many layouts. Personally I think it is well worth the money. I've played the game since the first public version came out back in 2002/2003. :D

I also agree that F1 2010 is a must-buy for anyone who likes racing games. Racing in Monaco at full speed is pure fun!

Is LFS a pay per month kinda of deal or do you just pay a one time fee for a certain license?

One time per license. You can get S1 & S2 license for $36 USD.

IMO, there are not very many good arcade racers on PC. Most PC games are simulators. iRacing is the best racing game on PC that I have played, it just isnt for everyone(expensive pay per month + pay for cars/tracks).

Racing games worth checking out:
-iRacing
-LFS
-GTR
-rFactor
-Richard Burns Rally(Sures its old, but the best WRC games to date)

But if you want a racing simulator, check out iRacing. Rookies can now race the Mazda Miata which is a blast to drive. Once you race on iRacings laser scanned tracks, every other racing game's tracks almost seems like a joke.

I just got F1 2010 in the steam sale and I agree with eveyone here, great game. Looks awesome and its a blast going that fast

I loved TDU1, and was excited about TDU2, and was considering a release day purchase or even pre-order...

And then I tried the beta two months ago... Whoops!

I'm going to wait and see what worth of mouth is on the final release.

I"m thinking of getting Need for Speed Shift

gonna see if there is a Steam sale on the game before buying

meaning i'll probably wait till the last day of Steam sales to buy

it's more than likely we'll see GRID available on Steam sale at some point during Christmas

i'm not sure about Shift, but i do have a feeling it will be there too

Me too, I am hoping they have a sale on it, like for 7.50 or something like that. I need a good racer, I already played GRID into the ground.

I usually play FPS's, but I bought Burnout Paradise for $5 on the recent Steam sale, and I gotta say, I like it. Wow, just simple fun....so different than a shooter. And I had a windows Xbox controller lying around, and it works really well w/ it.

.

I bought F1 on Steam. Unfortunately it doesn't run nearly as well on my machine as Dirt 2 does -- it's kind of unplayable for me in eyefinity. Loved Dirt 2. I also picked up Burnout Paradise but haven't downloaded/installed it yet.

I've played Forza 3, but not having eyefinity for a racing game really sucks.

You'll enjoy Burnout.

if you liked GRID so much, then I'm sure i'll like it too, i tried to play the demo of it, and it had kind of wonky controls, or at least not quite what I'm used to. I'll just have to play it further.

Not sure but i think some people have upgraded Nascar racing 3 and/or 4 since they stopped making them. While older racing games, there hasn't imho been a nascar or racing simulator like them for awhile.
Would love to see a version done with today's graphics, ect.
Got NFS:Shift but still D/L'ing it atm. Loving Dirt2 though. Was going to get F1 2010 but they raised the price before i could get it but it will go back down i think.

In regard to actual racing sims then:-

Rfactor for the sheer number of free mods out there, use the game for our racing league, and Rfactor 2 is due out soon, looks damn impressive primarily an online sim (personally I like racing against other people that know how to drive unlike the GT5 arcade racers using your car as a brake/wall avoidance system).

GTR2 is great if you want to race on your own or with anyone else, iRacing is online only, but it's a monthly subscription so I have no interest in that.

GTR Legends (SIMBIN made a string of really good racers, not my fault) classic cars from the 60's, start off with a Mini Cooper and work your way up, to the muscle cars like Mustangs and Corvettes.

Race 07 is another classic racing game from late 2008-09.

I have little time or patience for a game that's eye candy and no sense of realism these days, not since Race Driver 1 anyway.

Trackmania is just the best racing game I have ever played. I was a big fan of the Dirt games, but damn, Trackmania ia just so fun and addicting with custom maps. I was ranked #23 in the USA a couple of months after it released :) .

Trackmania has that replayability quality with the nice jump in and play MP and custom tracks. It's definitely one of my favorite racing games of all time.

It is pretty fun. People should also chek out Trackmania.
