I found a DELL for $329 and has the following features: 10.1 netbook, Intel Atom N450, 1GB memory, 250GB hard drive, 8 hour battery life, webcam, wireless, comes with Windows 7. I don't want to spen a lot of money and also not have something so cheap that will break in short time.....is this a good deal, or can anyone reccommend something with a better deal?

Sounds like a great deal, and a big brand too.
Just teach your kid that keys are fragile, and never to have the netbook and any liquid on the same table or desk. Also he should work on battery power until depleted and recharge only then if he wants to keep the long battery life. Although I read somewhere that this is not true for the current batteries?

Thanks for the tips, I wonder how would one know if you dont have to leave the battery plugged in when it is fully charged.

for lithium ion batteries you want to keep it above 15% at all times, going under 15% damages the max charge on them.

its the old nickel batteries that had cycle memories that you had to fully discharge before charging again.

good deal, good quality.
I got my girlfriend an Asus last year. I wanted a similar dell but at the time it was ~400 and out of my budget. Shes very happy with the Asus build quality, the Dell is great as well.

I'd get it.

hmmm netbooks, personally i would buy a regular pc even if it is a cheap build

I also agree on the cheap pc. I hooked one up to the flat panel in the living room for my brother, got him a wireless mouse and keyboard for Christmas. That way my mom can have some idea what he is doing and guide him. Also going to set up all the old emulators so he can check out the games i grew up on. Most of my friends have damage.. destroyed their laptops, and they are several times his age. Plus the pc is cheaper, and it gives me an excuse to upgrade my pc :)

You find a cheaper one on Ebay, I bought two hp mini 110 for MY 2 daughter's ( 9 and 11) for 320.00.
