WikiLeaks, the embattled website that refuses to go away, has put out a call for help. WikiLeaks is recruiting mirror sites to insure the continuance of information distribution over disruptions due to heavy DDoS attacks. The call has been heard and so far, 355 additional websites are serving as mirror sites for the controversial website.

WikiLeaks has faced a number of DDOS attacks, designed to knock out access to the website. WikiLeaks.org appears to still be offline. New links to WikiLeaks from the company's Twitter feed are going to WikiLeaks.ch.

If this is truly a "government for the people, by the people", why do we have anything to hide from ourselves?

I have to agree, all of the "top secret" is an abuse of power most of this stuff is not really secrets and should be transparent. They are hiding it intentionally because it it were public citizens would be outraged.

Who decides? The population as a whole is stupid.

Because it isn't a government for the people, by the people. Simples.

Precisely. But I digress... very few people realize the severity of hiding information from the public and how it will subsequently lead to yet another right lost every single day. I just recall an image I saw floating around which had 2 pictures of people, one being the person who leaked these documents and another someone...
Under each it said: "Do nothing: Win Nobel Peace Prize": "Stand up independently in an effort to support ourselves: Get an arrest warrant" I felt there was some truth to that.

Oh, and I think you can guess who that other someone is

Because the one thing I want is North Korea, China, and Iran to have access to all of our sensitive military and diplomatic information.

You people are Grade A retarded.

Change all .info, .org, etc. to .ch -> wikileaks.ch is the new main site.

wikileaks.ch/mirrors.html works.

What makes the people running the US government any more responsible, sane, or trustworthy than either the citizens, the governments of those countries, or Wikileaks?

Perhaps it is time the US is brought down a level and shown it can't be the police bully of the world.

The link doesn't work for me, but the main wikileaks page has a list of mirrors. The top link from there worked for me... didn't check the rest...

I can understand people's fear in having everything open, but really we should be brave and consider the idea that more people will be helped then saved with that attitude. I'm not really sure of course, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case.

He was arrested because he broke the law. Releasing classified documents, regardless of the content, is a crime.

Yeah. No doubt... the world would be much better off with China, Russia or (your choice of Middle Eastern countries) running things. I for one wish we would stay out of everyone elses problems. Should have quite some time back. Anyways... sleep good tonight knowing that nothing will happen to Canada as long as the USA is policing the world.

Well Wikileaks also had info that China authorized "attacks" on Google...yup, must still be anti-US, that Wikileaks.

Sorry to break in on the massive kumbaya circle jerk, but QFT right here.

Those of you saying that some things are classified that shouldn't be, perhaps you have an argument. But those of you arguing against having classified information or secrets in general are quite frankly batshit insane

Question, and it's not a hypothetical one - can you name me a single society that does not keep secrets at some level? Has there ever been a successful one in history?

Answer? No.

Too add more against the insane asylum around here and as someone who has held a top secret clearance. Do you really want things such as detailed schematics and materials lists for things like nuclear weapons available to every crackpot dictator and backwoods nutjob? If your answer is anything other then hell no, kindly go play in a busy freeway.

I agree that our and all governments should be held more accountable then they are. However while most of us around here obviously do not fall into the average group, you have to remember the average person is panicky, stupid or in most cases outright insane. Allowing most people access to this kind of information is nothing short of pure stupidity.

Really though - people you're saying that people who want to undermine the national security of the US didn't have access to any of this information before? I find that hard to believe.

What are you talking about? 80% of the thread is filled with those kinds of people.

Trying to be nice so I don't get banned. Last time I took a political stance or rather disagreed with someones political stance I got my account banned. But yes, there is a heavy amount of disillusionment in this thread.

You are aware that Asagne stated his intent is to hurt America, right?

Your stating it as if he "hit first". The US government "made the first move" so to speak, thus the more recent "hurt the US" stance. Prior to that there was no specific objective of attacking the US.

Since April of this year our timetable has not been our own, rather it has been one that has centred on the moves of abusive elements of the United States government against us.

He's reacting to what the US government is doing, not the US government merely reacting after being acted upon by him.

And you keep on emphasizing the US cables, when even the Kenyan elections in 2007 was said to be affected by actions from Wikileaks. So unless Kenya is now a US state, that's obviously an action not targeting the US, or an industrialized, Western country for that matter.

Answer? No.

Considering that Wikileaks claims to also have information on other countries, China for example (not cables from the US officials about China, but information from China itself), it would be possible within a decade or so that keeping secrets would eventually become pointless and a waste of time, as ALL secrets would leak, not just some, so no one would be at any disadvantage. For example, if an American suddenly won a $1 million lottery prize, he eventually gained an "advantage." Yet if everybody else also won $1 million, it would essentially be the same, albeit everybody got $1 million richer too.

It would seem though that you see international politics as a zero-sum game; that already "died", or at least rarely applied now after the Cold War ended.

Question, and it's not a hypothetical one - can you name me a single society that does not keep secrets at some level? Has there ever been a successful one in history?

Answer? No.

Failure in the past only means that we would know where we should succeed; the past can never be always an indication of the future.

QFMFT. The general public is fooled into thinking this is still a democracy.

You're right, we're not a democracy. Never have been never will be. We're a republic. Says so right in the constitution, 27 times actually. No where does it say democracy.

Here's a hint, if you all want to know the secrets join the military and bust your ass up to the top. They're there for the taking, you just have to earn them. ;)

Good. Screw the murderous control freaks. I don't care what it costs ANY government of the world...this information must get out. You must also stand up for Internet freedom when the embarrassed leaders try to shut it down.

The guy who leaked this last round of records was a lower-level worker for the DoD, not in the military.

I'd be happy with China running the show. At least they're upfront about oppressing their citizens.

Though, at this point, given the options, I'd rather have China as a major trading partner than the US. You are no longer our main market for primary resources, China is! And it's a market that isn't going anywhere; the US instead likes to play protectionist at the first signs of trouble.

tl;dr Canada's fine either way.

Regardless about whether or not the information should have gotten out or not, going after the messenger (Assange) is downright stupid. All they've guaranteed by shutting him down officially at every turn (freezing bank accounts, shutting down providers, etc) is that from now on he'll use resources you can't touch. Having those 500+ mirrors in place this fast is a testament to what resources are available and this will only prove that you can't hide the information once it is out of its confined box. Attacking Assange only makes you look sad and outdated.

You will care when it directly and negatively impacts your way of life, because it will if it is allowed to go on unabated. To think otherwise is quite simply living in a fantasy world that does not exist.

Sorry, those weren't in this series of DIPLOMATIC CABLES. Try again

I agree with the second part of your statement, but frankly I'd rather idiots get a hold of information and become panicked, than governments continue to keep us in the dark about even their basic operations.

Question, and it's not a hypothetical one - can you name me a single society that does not keep secrets at some level? Has there ever been a successful one in history?

Answer? No.
Let's turn that around (and slightly reorder it somewhat) into...
Can you name me one single society that became successful by keeping oodles of secrets from its citizens?
Answer? No. The People tend to overthrow them. See: Britain [creating your country], France, USSR.

What I see is a ton of government apologists in this thread. After all, it's all in the name of stopping the turrurists, right? It's all for "National Security". People should not be afraid of their governments, governments should be afraid of their people. If they're not, there's a problem. Right now, there is a problem. WikiLeaks is part of the solution. I agree, there are things that should be secret. REAL National Security stuff about chemical weapons, nuclear arsenals and advanced DoD computers. But has WikiLeaks released any of these? No. They've released classified memos about the US' diplomacy around the world. STOP making this out to be more than it is as an excuse to shut down Wikileaks.

Ok folks, in principle I agree about transparency, but there is information that should not go out to"The REST Of The World". The PRC does not and should not have access to a lot of our governental and or financial information. This megalomaniac with delusioms of granduer needs to be put away. He seems to forget the "Freedom is the Right to take Respnsibility For One's Own Actions." And for him that means jail.

To me he is pretty much a bully and a coward as much as the system maybe. The fact that he is basically promising that he will release information including peoples names etc that will put them in harms way and not really give a shit about it $417 about it just to save his own scrawny sass says it all.coward who can't really stand up for his convictions and take it like a man when the law catches up to him. Talks a big game, but isn't willing to be a martyr to his own cause. He is a hypocrite as far as I can see it.

Tell me how a list of facilities 'vital to US security' was a responsible thing to leak.
