Top Three Most Over-Rated Games... In Your Opinion

1. All the CoD games with regenerating health.

2. Both L4D games - I over hyped myself on the first one thinking it was going to be the perfect game for me. I don't enjoy them at all. I even got the 2nd one as a gift and feel kind of bad I never play it.

3. TF2 - I just couldn't get into this. It just feels too controlled. I loved TFC for its crazy ass game play and how people mastered their own play style even though it wasn't balanced at all. TF2 just feels babied too much, while TFC is a tad extreme, but that made it fun when you got decent yourself.

This thread may end up as a flame war but...

1. WoW - I do not like warcraft lore, nor do I like games designed to be easy enough that your kids and grandparents may like it.

I agree. I tried twice to get into WoW. Gave up both times.

Elder Scrolls 4, Oblivion. I put it back into the Gamefly mailer sleeve after about a half hour of gameplay (not counting time to create my character).

Can't really think of anything else at the moment.

1. Fallout 3 = Oblivion with a futuristic look  plain borring
2. WoW = ( or any MMO )
3. Minecraft = really?

1. Bioshock - So boring. Cool intro though!
2. SC2 - Big disappointment, I was a massive SC1 fan.
3. CoD MW2 - Self-explanatory.

Crysis -- It's a benchmark, as a game its just another Crytek shite game on a shiny tropical island.
Metro 2033 -- Very linear, the most buggy game i've played, short. Looks good though, again probably better used for benchmarking.
Mass Effect -- Just a bit boring really and just a bit "meh" really considering the hype.

Strictly PC:

  1. Anything Blizzard has made since Diablo 2, including the abominations known as Warcraft 3 and WoW
  2. Left for Dead. Fun for a bit, then it just became boring and repetitive. L4D feels like a $10 mod.
  3. CS:S and DoD:S. They should have just upgraded the graphics and left the damn game mechanics exactly the same.

Overall in gaming:

  1. Halo series. A mediocre game by PC FPS standards is somehow the holy grail of console games?!
  2. Gears of War. Mediocre again, but it somehow sets a "bar" for new games.
  3. Anything Blizzard has made since Diablo 2.

H-L2, WoW and any CoD game past 4, maybe past WaW. I liked the WaW multiplayer. And L4D, I'm doing four.

All completely tedious wastes of time that make my skin crawl whenever I try to play them. The reasons vary a little for each but it wouldn't be too far to say that they're all just basically gash.

Here are mine. I had to use Top 5 in this cause these are really in my eyes Terrible games.

COD Franchise
BioShock Serie's
Fallout Serie's
L4D Serie's
Halo Franchise

COD: I really dislike the COD franchise because they use lame ass stories, online are full of cheaters & Graphics are Terrible with every new game. (Game takes no skill what so ever. Run n gun style isnt for me)

Bioshock: They had a really kool idea with Bioshock but the game was just overall Boring. I couldnt keep Focused (had some of the best Fire ive ever seen + water)

Fallout Series: I love games about the end of the world but to be honest I find fallout 3 and new vegas very Dull and Repetitive. ALOT of walking around wich gets boring to the point where you just turn it off.
(I hope RAGE will do better then Fallout)

L4D Serie's: Some of the crappiest games. What is another word for Repetitive. The games are Terrible

Halo Franchise: Never been a fan of Halo. Ive tryed every Halo but there just isnt anything special in my opinion about the Franchise.

Grand Theft Auto IV

A mediocre and fundamentally boring game.
Got tired of it after an hour, so I downloaded a finished savegame, edited the weapons xml to give me infinite bullets/range/power and gave the cops guns zero range and power (essentially enabling god mode). That was fun for another hour. Never touched it since.

F1 2010

An uninspired and miserable addition to Codemaster's racing games based on the GRID engine.
GRID was amazing (still is), DIRT 2 was good and an original additon alongside GRID. F1 is a buggy and dull turd that just utterly lacks the 'joy of driving' that GRID and DIRT 2 have. Worst game purchase I've made in years, not to mention the harrowing lack of a proper menu ui that would let you just practice/fucking race right now.

Crysis Warhead

Not as good as Crysis.
I don't get why the general impression in the gaming community is that Crysis was universally panned whilst Warhead was praised as being what Crysis should have been. Sorry, but no. The original Crysis was longer, more varied, and alot less 'dumb' in terms of strategy and gameplay. No, the reason everyone loved it over Crysis was simply that by the time it came out everyone had upgraded their graphics hardware and so weren't brought to girly limp e-peen tears when they first fired it up. I can't remember a single 'good moment' in Warhead, but in the original they were numerous.

1.) Halo - If this had been released on the PC instead of the XBOX, I can't see it having the success it does if it had gone to the PC. For the console, it was pretty good, but it was not the most engaging game there. The only reason I can see why it took off was that the controls didn't suck ass.

2.) Prey - Maybe not 'overrated' but for the people impressed by it, it's not so impressive. You can't 'die' in the traditional sense, so the temptation to go kamikaze starts early on. The gameplay elements are unique, but by the time you actually start to do something really sweet with them, the game's over...in like 5 hours or less--ON THE FIRST RUN THROUGH!

3.) *saved space*

I would completely, though I'd say most of those only apply to the games post-CoD2. That's the last one that did require skill to be good, which is probably why I was always hopeless at it.

Halo - Pretty much the entire series. People talk about CoD being the same game over again but nobody says that about Halo. I won't deny that the multiplayer isn't a blast. But that's about all it has going for it.

Super Mario Galaxy - Bought it and got bored a few hours in. I didn't see what all the hype was about.

Eh, drawing blanks right now on a third.

STARCRAFT DIABLO WOW and all shit from Blizzard, boring pathetic graphics and useless, while people see it as secund comming of Christ, stupid nerds

Did you play it in 1993 or in 2010 ... huge difference in perception.

I played it in 95 or 96 and it was an incredible experience.

I played it when it was brand new on the suggestion of pretty much everyone. It was horrid, sure it was pretty but it was one of the most boring games I've ever played. I'm glad EB still allowed returns on PC games at the time.

Any modern warfare game is over rated - that series has become a young male thing, in that they have to play it to prove themselves.

But honestly, for me, one of the most over rated games I've seen in years... just a dumbed down cartoony version of a game... and representative of everything I hate in a computer game... just a total mediocrity... and utterly barren of imagination or originality... with zero atmosphere... a game that was clearly aimed at casual gamers... with more hand holding than I've ever seen in a game... was Torchlight. An utterly forgettable experience. I wish I had never even seen it.

Boy, I am with you there. Torchlight was a hot steamer laid at your doorstep by the neighbors dog and your neighbor saying "Ahhhw, isn't that cute? He left a present for you!"
It was a game that was more in line with gaming 10 years ago. It was so simplistic I considered getting it for my 5 year old; but naah. Don't waste your money. I was very puzzled by the rave reviews. Did these people just come out of a coma they fell into in 1998??

OK, I'm joining in. But there is only 1 game that comes to mind I really hated.
Mostly because it was one of the WORST ports to the PC ever and that Bungee was one of the best game developers out there until Microsoft bought them. That is HALO.
It ran like CRAP even on a high spec machine at the time. What pissed me off was to see how well it ran on the Xbox1 compared. It was an insult to PC gamers. At the time I was afraid it was a sign of thing to come. Games would be written for consoles and the ported to PCs instead of the other way around.

(1) Halo

(2) All sequels after COD1 and COD:UO

(3) Mass Effect, closely followed by Assassins Creed

1. Oblivion....'Have you heard about the mudcrabs?' The hype was a tidal wave, the game so much less, and so seriously busted.

2. GTA4. Crappy controls, crappy optimization, all in all bad port, I don't want to fight the controls as well as the stuff in the story.

3. WoW. Didn't like the setting to begin with. Too snarky and oh so full of itself. The combination of the formulaic gear/builds/end content, plus the rancid player base, is just too much for me.

Horrible Mention to Metro33. I guess the good Devs stayed with the Stalker team.

Have I missed it or has no one mentioned far cry 2. The game that could have been pretty damn good IMO but was let down by obviously not being play tested before release.

Mass Effect
Dragon Age
Bioshock 1/2
Fallout 3/NV
Crysis / Warhead
MW2
Borderlands

Funny how people's tastes are different... DAO, ME, Fallout 3 and Borderlands were some of my recent faves. Agreed on MW and Bioshock (especially the sequel).

We should start an underrated thread. I'd start with:

1. The Witcher
2. Amnesia Dark Decent
3. Fronline: Fuels of War

I think Frontline : Fuels of War was fucking awful , I have no idea why peopled like that game.

I think Civ 5 was I felt completely not true to the series and was full of bugs (most of which have yet to be fixed).

Just Cause 2 was another , I just felt like it was such a clone. Didn't give two shits about the story and really it was just a benchmark for your GPU. I'm sick of GTA clones.

1. CoD MW2 and Black Ops (The first CoD games were great, but I don't understand the hype of the last two)
2. Halo series (Never thought the games were that great)
3. The Sims

I noticed that most of the games listed here are somewhat recent. But I remember a few over hyped games that made me want to cry over the loss of my money.

Here they are in no particular order;

1 - Aquanox and it's followup Nox
2 - The huge Romero flop 'Daikatana'
3 - Anything 'The Sims'

There are others but these 3 just made my blood boil.

I was just thinking that. I'd be more impressed if anybody could whip up some old games that were overrated. Personally I'm at a loss.

Now I cant say for certain as I havent beat it but honestly I'm not digging doom 3 as much as I thought I would. It's still a pretty game but it's an in the dark 24/7 corridor shooter.

I mentioned Dragon's Lair. How much older are you looking for? Do you think Space Wars and Pong were overrated? :)

To be honest, I dropped Dragon Age Origins fairly fast. The game seemed cool and has some good mechanics + the story is probably awesome, but going through the regular fantasy setting at slow pace with a lot of dialoge made me too bored to continue

Mass Effect 1 was the best game from the recent Bioware games.

1. Any RTS other than SC/SC2 - they all suck
2. STALKER series - never understood the appeal. The graphics and gameplay are both absolutely horrendous
3. Fallout 3 - amazing game, but it has some sort of cult like obsessive following. I've seen people that claim to have played hundreds of hours. I see no reason to play it after beating it, which didn't take too long.

To the OP:

If you tried DAoC early on (50 before NF minimum I'd say) then I'd say it would be hard to over-state its awesomeness. I've played it recently too on a classic freeshard and it really isn't just pure nostalgia. If you played it later in the game, or played it solo, or never played it at least slightly competitively, I could see why it wouldn't seem like pure awesome. If you picked it up any time after 2005, I'd say that's comparable to showing a CoD fan Goldeneye, and wondering why they don't see how revolutionary the game was.

Anyways, as an ex DAoC fanboi and current nostalgist, I had to come to its defense...continue.

cant believe no-one has mentioned this steaming pile of shit yet:

1: SPORE
My GOD did that shit blow.

2: everything after cod4 is fucking horrendous.

3: GTA IV - shitpile.
